Big Eyes, Strong Muscles

P1110243Up until about a week ago, I hadn’t done much tummy time with Simon. It was just one of those things that isn’t very fun to do, gets forgotten easily, and as a result, didn’t happen much. While I was researching some ideas for Elias for a different project, I came across an article about tummy time and development of babies. I read it through and…whammo! Bring on the guilt. I was letting life get in the way of something so easy to do, but has huge benefits.

So we’ve been working on tummy time a few times a day for a few minutes each time. Simon actually seems to be doing pretty well with it now. I vary the surfaces he lays on so he experiences different textures and different inclines. I place different objects in front of him to look at. I get right down there with him a lot of the time. (This morning he had a tummy time session with two of his other baby playmates and he enjoyed staring at them quite a bit). Elias also got right down on the floor with Simon in the evening and said, “I’m doing tummy time!”

Simon’s neck muscles are getting quite strong. This evening during tummy time, he was able to hold his head up almost the entire time, and resorted to laying his head on the pillow only at the very end. I love this boy!

Simon – 8 weeks

My baby boy is 8 weeks old already! It seems like everything is going faster the second time around. I took him to get some portraits taken in his baptism outfit today. He did pretty well throughout the session even though we had to wake him up! Somewhere in the middle he starting “talking” non stop. He sounded unhappy, but he wasn’t fussing or crying…just “talking.” I think he must have been trying to give the photographer his opinion on the bright flashes she kept setting off in his face. Here is a preview of a few of the shots:

Running

Simon was born 8 weeks ago. That also means that I had surgery 8 weeks ago. I’ve decided it’s time to start helping my body be healthy and return to pre-pregnancy state. So today, I started Weight Watchers again, and I started running.

Now running is not my forte. I prefer swimming for exercise, but with two kids, it just isn’t very doable. So I got myself some good running shoes, and today was the day.

After Simon woke up from his afternoon nap, the sun was out, the sky was blue, and the thermometer said 65 degrees. Perfect conditions for my first run! Of course, it took me about 30 minutes to actually get going including all the diaper changes, blanket and pacifier packing, and actually getting the boys into the stroller!

I was out for a little over an hour total. Probably only about 10 minutes of it was actual running. The rest was just walking…but you have to start somewhere, right? Actually…I don’t know if you could call what I did actual running. It was more like hanging on to the stroller for dear life while I shuffled along as fast as I could, tongue hanging out, breathing hard….at least it felt that way.

I made it back to the car to disassemble the stroller, and found that both boys were asleep! It’s rare that they are asleep at the same time so I decided not to waste the “me time.” I turned the stroller right around and went back out into the neighborhood. This time I just took a leisurely stroll and enjoyed the sky, the blossoms, the warmth of the sun on my back, and the sweet smell of spring. After awhile, though, I was starving so I went home to make dinner for a slightly grumpy toddler and myself.

During dinner, I asked Elias what he thought of the run. He said, “We went fast.” So I asked him, “Was it fun to go fast?” His response? “No, it was crazy!”

Well, I think it was a pretty successful first run. It can only get better from here, right?

I Guess I’ve Got A Lot To Learn…..

I guess I’ve got a lot to learn about being a Mom of two in the store. We had a mini adventure inside our local Target store this morning.

First of all, I just have to say that I had both boys ready and out the door before 9:00…yes…a.m. This does not seem to be an early time…but it is very difficult to get us all out the door on my own. As we entered Target, my eyes kept darting back and forth. I fully expected someone to come up and say “Excuse me…you aren’t wearing pants.” or “You still have shampoo in your hair” or I’d discover one of the boys had no diaper or hadn’t eaten breakfast or something.

But no…I really got us all ready that early. It’s a good sign for my desire to start running. It means I can go exercise and still go to play dates and such things at a reasonable time.

Anyway, I digress. We walked into Target, and I asked Elias if he would like to ride in the basket with Simon in the bjorn, or if he would like to walk with Simon in the basket. He chose to walk. It makes things tougher on me if he walks, but a boy’s got to learn at some point, right?

We went shopping, and got our peanut butter and contact paper and bananas and other things on our list. I only had to give Elias one warning to stay close or be confined to the basket. There was one item I could not find, however. I wanted clothes pins. As I looked up and down the aisles, I spoke aloud to myself and Elias: “Mommy is going to have to ask someone. I just don’t know where the clothes pins are.”

To my surprise, Elias ran over to a man (we had never seen him before) and says, “Uhhhhh….Mommy doesn’t know where clothes mans are.”

The guy gave a little smirk and went on his way. I about died laughing inside…but then thanked Elias for trying to help. We finished our shopping and went up to the check out register.

As I unloaded the cart, I found three things that had mysteriously appeared….I don’t know when….A cheeseburger piggy bank, a weird rubber dragon toy, and a bottle of Resolve carpet cleaner…..Oh my….how did he get those in there?

Elias…in his chatty mood…decided to start a conversation with the checker.

“Ummm….are you cleaning up?”

I tried to explain to Elias that she was helping us check out so we could pay and go home. But he was not satisfied. He turned back to the lady and said, “You’re putting that stuff away.” (She was bagging it)

Then he went on to point out that we were buying peanut butter and how it is his favorite and he wants to eat some when we get home. The checker was amused.

Finally, Elias pointed to the Mickey mouse toddler bed sheets still on the conveyor and said, “Don’t forget those!”

Well…all three of us made it home. We got everything on our list (and nothing extra). But I still think I’ve got a lot to learn about being a Mom of two in Target!

Great Grandma!

familyWe had the opportunity to spend some time with Great Grandma Smith (or according to Elias…Great Great Grandma….she does deserve the extra “great”). She came to Oregon with some of our other Indiana family members in order to attend the memorial service for Great Grandpa who passed on in January. It was sad in a way, but the service felt more like a celebration of his life than mourning his death. And it felt more like “goodbye for now” rather than “goodbye forever”.

We had a great time visiting with Great Grandma, Uncle Dave, Aunt Barb, and Grandpa Smith as well as Nathan’s sister and her family. We will miss all the fun family adventures.

Cousins!

Elias and Audrey hold hands on a short walk.

We’ve had family in town for the past week. It has been a ton of fun, but after a week of so much activity with so many people, we are exhausted! One of the most fun parts of having family in town was the opportunity for Elias to play with his cousins. The three of them (Elias and his two cousins) played very well together. It was so much fun for me to see Elias playing and running around with kids around his age and just acting like a little boy. He’s usually not interested in playing with other kids much at play group or art class or the church nursery. I think Elias has had a great time, and he’ll miss his cousins very much! Simon got to have a bit of cousin interaction as well. Both girls were interested in him. Audrey claims she doesn’t remember when her little sister was a baby, and Sonya hasn’t had any smaller siblings. He mostly slept through these times together, but I’m sure he’ll be joining in the fun before too long!

Easter!

We had a joyous Easter here in the Smith household. Simon woke us up early, so Nathan and I got to spend some time focusing on playing with him. We also hid a few Easter eggs since we were out too late to do that the night before. When Elias woke up, we read him “The Story of the Empty Tomb”. Simon was in the room too so he at least heard it. Then, we took the boys out to see their Easter baskets.

basketAfter he looked at everything in his basket, Elias took the stuff out of Simon’s basket and showed it to him.

SimonWhen the baskets were finished, I told Elias that it was time for an Easter egg hunt. I told him he could go look for all the eggs hidden in the room. His response…..

“No thank you.”

I sat dumbstruck for a minute, and then laughed a bit as I looked at Nathan. We finally convinced Elias to go looking for Easter eggs. He wanted to open each one as he found it, empty it into his basket, and discard the egg. He just hasn’t had an example to follow for proper Easter egg hunt procedure I guess. It was fun for him, though, so that is what matters.

After finding less than half the eggs Elias declared, “I need a water break.” I sighed, then realized how cute it was and resigned myself to the slow pace of our Easter egg hunt.

P1110080Simon enjoyed the Easter egg hunt as well:

P1110076After all the morning family fun, we went to church and met Grandpa Smith for the service. We are very thankful for St. Bart’s, and had joy filled Easter worship. The music was beautiful. After the hymn before the gospel reading, Elias said in a loud voice, “That was amazing!” That got a few chuckles from the pews in front of us.

Then, we went home for some rest, and regathered at Nana’s house for an Easter dinner. Elias thoroughly enjoyed playing with his cousins. Here they are at the dinner table.

Simon’s Baptism

Blessing the water

Blessing the water

Simon was baptized at the Easter Vigil service this year. We were glad that so many family members could be there to share it with us! He had all four grandparents, four out of five aunts and uncles, and his two cousins there along with his godparents, brother, mommy and daddy! I once again got a bit teary-eyed as my son was baptized. It was a special event indeed.

Irresistible

Smile!

Smile!

Simon is having more and more time awake and alert now that he is almost seven weeks old. Often times he is a very happy boy during those times as well. We are seeing more and more smiles and hearing more and more cooing. It’s quite fun, and he is quite irresistible. Even Elias is drawn in when Simon is happy and awake. He still sits back a few feet, but he shows Simon different rattles and says, “Simon’s talking”.

Another important event: Simon met his Grandpa Smith for the first time! Grandpa arrived on the train on Saturday!

Easter Eggs

Elias placing an egg in the orange dye

Elias got to dye Easter eggs for the first time this year. He had a lot of fun doing the first six eggs. He wanted to do one of each color. But he lost interest pretty quickly. I’m glad he got the fun experience…but I think this activity will be better suited for him when he is a few years older! He mostly wanted to spoon the eggs in an out of the dye. I protected my counters with some waxed paper, but the splashes he produced by looking at the eggs made a big mess! It was hard for me to just let go and have fun, but I was determined to let him have the experience rather than taking over.
