Help!

Elias woke up today with a swollen upper eyelid. My first thought was pink eye and “Nooooooooo”. But then I thought for awhile. I don’t ever remember having pink eye, but I’m sure I did at some point. I don’t know much about it all…but aren’t you supposed to have some discharge? Elias had none. His actual eye looked fine, and he could open it and use it…it was the upper eyelid only. When I looked closer it had these purple lines…I got worried that it was injured. I called the doctor’s office, and after a talk with the nurse, the swelling had already gone down a bit, but those purple lines were still there so she wanted me to bring him in just in case.

Needless to say, Elias did not have a very enjoyable time at the doctor. He was quite thrilled to get a sticker at the beginning…but as soon as the eye examination began he was quite upset. He had to get it flushed. He had to get dye put in it, and weird florescent lights shone in it. He had to have it pried open even as he squeezed it shut and tears poured out.

During the examination he had to be held down by two people not including the doctor….and all the while was screaming, “Help! Help!” I have to admit it was so pitiful I almost laughed the first time I heard him say “help.” But then…. I knew that he was going to be ok and that it would end soon. He didn’t. I felt like the worst mommy in the world listening to those screams. After awhile, he stopped saying “help” and tried “all done, all done.”

My poor boy.

The doctor determined that is definitely not an infection or pink eye or anything like that. She is reasonably sure that there is nothing in his eye (it was difficult for her to see in there with him so upset) She was pretty positive that we would have known when it got injured if that was it…and he never complained about his eye at all yesterday and did not cry during the night. So she said it is probably a reaction of some sort. She prescribed a bit of benadryl…and then we’ll just have to wait and see. We may never know what happened.

The swelling is down a lot now. I just checked on him during his nap…he is sleeping off the trauma and the medicine. Those pesky purple lines are still there. I guess I should feel happy that we know there is nothing seriously wrong with his eye…but it sure seemed like putting him through a lot of trauma for nothing.

Weekend of Family Fun

Cooler weather didn’t stop the Smiths from having some family fun this weekend. Saturday morning we relaxed and played. Then we headed out to the library to pick up The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown Blu-ray which I had placed on hold, and to Michael’s to pick up a few items we needed for arts and crafts fun.

Elias painting leaf magnets.

After lunch and nap time, we made leaf magnets! Elias absolutely loves art class these days so I wanted to try and do more arts and crafts at home. I cut leaf shapes out of craft foam, then let him paint them. Then we stuck magnets on the back and “Ta-Da”! They turned out very cute, and Elias was very excited to be painting.

After painting, we decided to watch the Charlie Brown movie. Elias had never watched a movie before, so we thought this would be a good start…it’s short. He had fun watching, and commenting on what Snoopy was doing.

Then, Nathan and I went to our church auction, and Ama and Baba came over to spend time with Elias. We keep worrying that all these wonderful in town grandparents are going to get babysitting fatigue, but they all vehemently deny that that will happen. Nathan and I had a fun night out, and Elias was put to bed at home for the first time without us. We are starting to practice for when the baby comes.

Elias with the pile of books he has just finished reading.

Today we headed off to church, and mostly relaxed the rest of the day. Elias got a lot of time to play at home with his toys. We did a little more fall art with some leaf stickers and some markers. Then Elias made his own fun. He set himself up on the couch next to his box of books, and pronounced to Nathan and I, “Elias reading.” He took one book after the other and read them. Some he just looked at pictures, but some he knows well enough that he actually did say all the words aloud. It was very cute to watch, and it made me very proud.

Elias Sings the ABC’s

Elias loves the ABC’s these days. He loves letter stamps, letter puzzles, letter flashcards, finding letters in books, and of course, the ABC song. He has recently started singing along with a bunch of different songs such as the Wheels on the Bus, Mary had a Little Lamb, and more. Today I caught him singing the ABC’s with me on video. Too cute for words!

Apple Picking

The first apple that Elias picked. It required a bit more force than he thought, but he loved it!

Yesterday we took advantage of our good fortune with the nice weather and decided to go apple picking. Last year, we discovered the Hood River Fruit Loop, and Mountain View Orchards (one of the stops on the fruit loop). We loved it enough that we wanted to go back.

This year was different because Elias was able to walk well, and he was able to actually pick some apples. We had a bit of trouble getting him to be gentle enough when setting the picked apples in our wagon. We ended up with a few bruises before he got the hang of “gentle” even though he said it every time he set one in the box.

I think Elias would have picked hundreds of apples if we would have let him. He loved it! He was excited and kept saying, “red apples, green apples” and “apple picking.” We also walked by a few pear trees, and he wanted to pick those. We let him pick two of them, but we mostly went for the apples.

For some of the trees we had to lift Elias up so that he could pick the apples, but on others, there were good apples close enough to the ground that he could just reach up and pick them himself.

Elias finds one right at his level!

After buying all of our apples, we went on the free hayride that they offer. Elias excitedly said, “hayride” even as dust was clogging our eyes. We got to see about a quarter of the orchard, and we stopped to feed the animals. Elias was excited to see a “horsey” a “goat” and a “moo-cow” (Texas Long Horn) as well as some alpacas.

After the hayride, we ate a picnic lunch in the sun, enjoyed the view of Mt. Hood, and then drove home for a nice Saturday evening at home. Have some fall fun…mission accomplished!

Birthday Weekend in Cannon Beach

We took Elias to Cannon beach for the weekend on his real birthday. We’ve had a few celebrations already…with more to come! But we wanted to have something special for just the three (four?) of us. The weekend was perfect. It was beautiful and not too crowded. It was typical Oregon beach…we had to wear fleeces…but there was barely a cloud in the sky and hardly any wind.

Elias had so much fun. He was very excited when we arrived on Friday evening. He climbed on the bed and was laughing and playing as we were unpacking.

We decided a swim in the pool would be appropriate since we had to skip swimming class to get to the beach, and we wanted to let off some energy. Elias put on his own shoes to walk down to the pool. Notice anything funny?

Elias and Daddy had lots of fun doing jumps, bubbles, and motor boats.

Saturday morning, we headed for the beach. As usual, Elias loved making sand castles and digging holes.

Then he went exploring with his Daddy. They explored a couple logs, and then went out to see some sea gulls and the ocean closer up. (No swimming in the ocean today. It was too cold)

We had a beautiful view of Haystack Rock.

After playing on the play ground for awhile, we headed inside for some lunch. Elias also got to open some of his birthday presents from Mommy and Daddy. Nathan got him some Star Wars action figures. Elias can now say Chewbaca, Yoda, and D2 D2 (R2 D2). Mommy gave him an Elmo doll. Elias promptly started pretending it was time for Elmo’s nap, so we thought it would be a good time to segue into nap time!

Saturday evening was spent exploring Sea Side. We drove into town, rode the carousel, and ate at Norma’s. Then we went back to our hotel where we again went swimming!

Sunday was Elias’ real birthday. We took him to breakfast at our favorite breakfast place in the world! (Although I have to admit we haven’t been to very many places, we really do love this place….) The Lazy Susan Cafe!

Then, we took the birthday boy to explore the tide pools at Haystack Rock, and to play in the sand some more before packing up to go home. We got to the tide pools just in time. We spent about ten minutes there before the tide was too high.

It was a fun way to spend Elias’ 2nd birthday. Even if he doesn’t remember it, I know he had lots of fun while we were there!

Disneyland: Part 3 – The Last Day

Our last day at Disneyland was more of the same. Tons of fun! We did a lot of Elias’ favorites many times (carousel, tea cups, small world). But we also experienced some new things. We went to toon town and Elias got to meet three different characters for the first time. He explored Tarzan’s tree house, and the boys had some fun with the sword in the stone. By the end of the day, Elias was extremely tuckered. He fell asleep, and could not be woken up for anything. I even held him while riding Buzz Lightyear Astroblasters and he didn’t even move once. Here are some pictures of our family fun on the last day at Disney:

Another ride on Dumbo with Daddy.

Family ride on the purple tea cup again!

The boys wanted to spin really fast so they went in their own tea cup the second time around.

Elias met Goofy!

Elias was very interested by Pluto, but didn’t want to get too close.

Meeting Chip

Exploring Tarzan’s Tree house

Daddy trying for the sword.

Uncle Greg’s Turn

Now Uncle Scott

And Elias tries…look at that concentration

Waiting for the fam to get off Splash Mountain

I don’t know if you can tell from this picture, but Nathan was completely soaked after riding Splash Mountain. I think there was a small dry spot in one of his arm pits.

Elias all tuckered out. It was time to go home!

Baseball Outside

Elias loves playing “bat and ball.” We had to start keeping his tee, bat, and ball in the car because he loved playing with it so much, and tried to play with it inside. If we had a garage, that would be problem solved, but since we don’t, we had to settle for keeping it in the car. Luckily the car is on the way to the grass where he plays.

Last night, Elias played “bat and ball” with his Daddy, but I had to leave so the car was not there when they were done playing. Nathan brought everything inside. This morning after breakfast, I told Elias that I was going to work on laundry and he could play with his toys. So…I got the laundry started, and a few minutes later came back out to find Elias playing with his toys….

Oh dear. Luckily he had not managed to do any damage yet. He was so happy and proud of himself that I just had to snap a picture. But then I had to explain to him yet again that bat and ball is an outside toy even though it was inside today. He got a little upset when I had to put the bat and the ball inside the laundry closet out of reach, but he’ll survive. We play with it outside almost every day.

2 Year Old Stats

Elias had his 2 year old wellness check up at the doctor’s today. He did really well. Things change when you turn two…

He got to stand on the big boy scale rather than sit on the baby one. He got to keep his clothes on for most of the visit, and was never completely undressed. He got a sticker! He actually played with the toys that they have for kids while they are waiting.

His doctor said he seems to be doing really well, and that his language is exceptionally clear for his age. She helped give me ideas for how to prepare Elias for the baby. She said his skin, teeth, etc. all look good. We are blessed to have such a healthy boy.

The stats:

Weight: 26 lbs 8 oz (about 30th percentile)

Height: 34.921 inches (about 65th percentile)

I think this is the last time, though, I will be posting doctor visit stats. After all, someday he might read back on some of these posts. I don’t want him to get too embarrassed at what I’ve written. He is two now and not a baby anymore!

Love You!

I am part of a Bunco group that meets once a month. It is fun to get out and just have fun with other women for a couple of hours. Nathan and Elias get “boys night” when I go out.

This evening I was finishing up dinner dishes and some laundry folding before I left for Bunco. Nathan took Elias out to play baseball. When it was time for me to leave, I went to say goodbye to my boys. I gave them hugs and kisses, and then walked to the car. As I was getting into the car, I shouted across the lawn, “Love you!”

And Elias said “love you” back. He was just repeating. And I can’t wait until he says it unprompted. But I will treasure this first time he told me he loves me.

Disneyland: Part 2

On our second day in California, we went to Disneyland! We had a “magic morning” which meant we got to get into the park an hour earlier than the general public. That was nice because it was very uncrowded. We got on lots of rides…sometimes by ourselves with no line! My dad, Elias, and I were on the carousel when 8:00 hit and the gates opened for everyone. We had a good view of the huge mass of people rushing in through the castle. It was quite amazing. (We were part of that mass the next morning….)

Anyway, here is our day at Disneyland in pictures:

The front gate, and much of the park was decorated for Halloween! We enjoyed seeing the fake carved pumpkins, and all the fall themed decorations.

When we entered, we met up with the rest of my family. Most everyone went on the Matterhorn first thing. My dad and I took Elias on the Alice in Wonderland ride and the teacups since those are very near the Matterhorn. This was the first time that Nathan rode the Matterhorn, and Elias’ first time on any ride at Disneyland! Elias loved the teacups. He wanted to go over and over again. I think we went three times in a row because the crowds were so low. We walked right on! Elias kept saying “purple one” or “red one”….I think we may have been in one of those colors every time we rode.

Elias even learned how to use the spinny wheel…although, luckily for Baba and Mama who don’t like spinning, he couldn’t turn it very fast!

After a few rounds of teacups, the rest of the family was done on the Matterhorn. We all went to ride Peter Pan and Dumbo. Here are Elias and Nathan preparing for the Dumbo ride. Elias kept telling Nathan whether to go “up” or “nown” (down).

Then, of course, we had to take a few rides on the carousel. Elias loves carousels! He also loved choosing which horse to ride. By the end of the day, I felt he was stable enough that I could ride too rather than stand next to him and hold his waist. What a big boy. He always looks so serious in these pictures, but he was having a very good time. After it was over, he would want “more.”

Here we are walking between “lands.” Auntie and Uncle are treating Elias to a fun way of walking. After awhile, he started saying “one, two, three, wheee!” on his own so he didn’t have to wait as long between swings.

Elias having fun on the submarine. He got a bit nervous when it was dark, but for the most part, he loved it.

Then on to autopia. Elias did not want to drive the cars, but he enjoyed the ride. It was reported to me that any time the car hit the track he would say “uh oh”

Nathan saw these frozen bananas and had to get one for a snack. Anyone know the reference?

At lunch time, we decided to head back to our hotel. We made sandwiches in our hotel room, then went for a swim. Elias loved doing jumps and motor boats, and just splashing around, taking a break from the parks. After swimming, we took a long nap!

After naps, we met back up with the rest of the family and my parents treated us to a nice dinner at the Rainforest Cafe. Elias loved walking around the restaurant and seeing the monkeys, elephant, etc.

After dinner, we went back into Disneyland for a couple more hours of fun. We rode the rockets, Buzz Lightyear astroblasters, and Elias’ possible favorite ride, It’s a Small World.

For the last hour or so, the rest of the family wanted to go on Thunder Mountain Railroad so Elias and I had some time with just the two of us. We rode It’s A Small World again, watched some fireworks, and I took him for one last spin on the teacups.

It was a long and very tiring day, but we all had a lot of fun. Two days down, one to go!
