The Golden Rose

Nathan has been working at OHSU for almost three years now. He’s been in his new position for about a month…but total, he’ll have been at OHSU three years in mid October. A few weeks after he started working there, Nathan mentioned to me that there is a “Golden Rose” award for employees. The Golden Rose is an award that recognizes service excellence at OHSU. It was one of Nathan’s goals to win one from the very beginning.

The Golden Rose is awarded to three or four people each month. Employees have to be nominated. Someone has to write the story to nominate you and submit it to the committee. Then the winners are chosen.

I say all this because Nathan was nominated by his former supervisor, and was chosen as a Golden Rose winner for the month of September 2012. I was very proud of Nathan because he had a goal, and did everything he could to reach it…then was recognized for it not only by his former boss, but the whole committee!

Elias and I went last week for a reception when Nathan got his award. It was fun for me to meet Nathan’s former boss and a few of his former coworkers. Elias enjoyed seeing his Daddy at work.

Eventually I think you’ll be able to read his story online, but as of now, they are only posted through June. Basically, Nathan worked with TVFR to surprise a patient who was stuck in the hospital to see her daughter’s high school graduation live on a screen in her hospital room. He had to volunteer his time on a Saturday to do it, too!

A 2-Year Old!

Elias on his birthday!

Today I am the proud momma of a two year old! Elias turned two at 7:02 p.m….not that anyone actually noted the time as it occurred (we were at Nathan’s softball game). I think he had a very happy birthday indeed. We went to Cannon Beach to treat him for a fun birthday weekend. I’ll write more and include pictures of that at a later time. For now I just want to celebrate his birthday. Besides playing on the beach he got to open some presents from Mommy and Daddy, play all afternoon, and go to Daddy’s softball game where he saw Amma, Baba, Auntie and Uncle (and Auntie made him cupcakes!).

I took this picture this morning. We took Elias to see the tide pools at Haystack rock. On our walk back to the car, I had this shot perfectly framed, but before I could snap it, he started running toward me very quickly…and very happily! I was lucky to even get him in the frame at all.

I feel so blessed to be this little boy’s Momma. It hasn’t all been easy by any means, but I wouldn’t trade any of it.

Happy Birthday, Elias!

Smile for Great Grandpa and Great Grandma!

Elias recently received a birthday card in the mail from Great Grandpa and Great Grandma. It even had five dollars in it! Nathan helped him open the card and read it to him. Then I appeared with the camera and said to Elias, “Smile for Great Grandpa and Great Grandma.” This is what I got. Pretty cute!

Snuggle More

We’ve had Elias’ bedtime routine set now for a long time. It works really well for him. Recently, though, he seems to have added his own final event in the bed time routine. The first few times it happened, I thought it was cute. Now he has been doing it for every nap and bedtime!

Basically it started a few days ago. I sang him his songs, and put him in the crib just like usual. We said good night and bye bye and love you. But then he started to cry and stand up…that wasn’t normal. I thought he was not feeling good or otherwise upset…so I went back to the crib and said, “Do you just need a few more snuggles?” He said, “Yeah.” So I took him back to the rocking chair for a few more minutes, and just sat there with him hugging me, resting his head on my shoulder. We sat in silence just hugging for a few minutes, and then I got up to put him in the crib, and he stayed there happily and fell asleep.

That happened again…and again…and now I guess it’s part of our routine. Both at nap time and bed time today, Elias listened to the songs, was laid in the crib, said bye bye, waited until I got to the door, and then said, “Snuggle more, snuggle more.” The first time it about melted my heart.

This evening when I put him to bed, we said our night nights and love yous and bye byes and I could see he was already going to stand up before I even left the crib side. So I stayed there thinking he would want to snuggle more. He saw me there and laid back down and whispered “bye bye.” Then, when I got to the doorway, he stood up and said, “snuggle more mama.”

I’m not sure why we have to go through the whole charade of going to bed and having me reach the doorway before he wants he snuggles. But I’ll take as many as I can get. I think it’s a fun addition to our bed time routine.

Disneyland: Part 1 – California Adventure

One of our first rides at California Adventure. Elias liked how it sort of whipped us back and forth.

Our first day at Disneyland was actually spent at the Disney’s California Adventure theme park. We were excited to check out Cars Land, and to introduce Elias to the idea of a theme park and rides. Most of the adults wanted to go on the newest “radiator springs” ride so Elias and I hung out in Cars Land by ourselves for the first hour or so. We went on five rides in the

Nathan’s first ride with Elias

time the rest of the family went on one! (My dad joined us for three of those five…he didn’t go on the radiator springs either) I was unsure how Elias would react to a ride other than a carousel so I said lots of “Wheeee” on the first couple rounds. He just took it all in stride…and

Amma and Baba on Luigi’s Tires…you can see Uncles and Auntie in the background.

then eventually cracked a smile. I think he had a lot of fun. After awhile, the rest of the family joined us, and Nathan got to go on his first ride with Elias.

After exploring Cars Land, we were already too hot (the high that day was 106 F) so we went to an indoor ride that Elias would enjoy….The Little Mermaid ride. Elias was nervous at the darkness, but ended up enjoying the ride.

I think Elias’ favorite ride of the day, though, may have been the Golden Zephyr. There were hardly any crowds so we actually got to just stay on the ride and ride it twice in a row. Elias sat with Uncle Greg and was shouting “Wheeeeee” at the top of his lungs. It was very fun to witness.

After a few rides together on the pier, most everyone wanted to ride the roller coaster, so my Dad and I took Elias on the carousel. Auntie joined us after one roller coaster ride, but the rest of the family went around for another spin! Elias chose the fish to ride on…Uncle Scott should be proud.

Auntie and Mama having fun on the carousel too.

By this time it was extremely hot, and we decided we just wanted to get inside somewhere and eat. We enjoyed a nice, air-conditioned, extremely expensive (for what it was) lunch…but it was worth it to get inside. Then we took a ride on the Grizzly river rapids to cool off before heading back to the hotel for a nap. We were lucky enough to stay close enough that it was only about a ten minute walk to and from the park. We definitely counted on those naps for Elias…and mommy too!

After nap time we met back up inside California Adventure for more fun and rides. We went to bugs land. Elias especially liked Heimlich’s choo choo, but got upset when the ride wouldn’t let him shut the train car doors on his own. Elias even got to cool off in a fountain with Baba.

We also enjoyed Toy Story Mania….

Elias playing with his new toys and waiting for the rest of the family.

Elias actually didn’t have to spend much time waiting for the “big” people to ride the bigger rides. There was usually always something for us to do while waiting. But we did enjoy a rest every once in awhile. Here we are back in Cars land waiting for the family to get off Radiator springs again. I bought Elias a set of six Cars toys. He seems to like Lightening McQueen and Sarge the best.

Elias enjoyed a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs…although Daddy ended up eating the meatballs.

At night, we played some of the carnival games for fun. Elias got to play a fishing game, and ended up winning the biggest prize…a Mickey Mouse all dressed up to go fishing. It was perfect!

Elias the fisherman!

The final thing Nathan wanted to see at California Adventure was the Hollywood Tower of Terror so we went there just before closing. Elias, Baba and Mama sat on a bench to rest and watch all of the glowing lights that come out at Disneyland at night. Elias happily sat on the bench, ate some chocolate coins, and called out colors as he saw them.

Our first day at Disneyland was a ton of fun…and a big success! It was also very tiring and very hot…but with seven adults and one child it didn’t take too much out of us. We were ready for a good night of sleep, and another round in the morning!

We Made the Pilgrimage

Nathan comes from a family full of Dodger fans. He was indoctrinated young to hate the Yankees and the Giants. While he’s seen the Dodger’s play before, he had never been to Dodger Stadium. So when my family started making plans to visit Disneyland, I suggested to him that we take some time to go see a Dodger game. At Dodger Stadium. We made the pilgrimage. (Luckily they were at home the few days we were there!)

Nathan…super excited after we found our seats.

We rented a car, and my sister-in-law drove us all safely to L.A. (Despite the pranks my brother pulled on her) We got in the stadium and immediately purchased some Dodger gear. We bought Elias a Dodger helmet, and Nathan got a real baseball cap. I already have two pregnancy Dodgers shirts, but decided to acquire one for the rest of the time…I’ll use it in a few months.

Dodgers taking the field at the beginning of the game.

Then we found our seats, watched some warm-ups, and decided it was time to get some grub. Dodger stadium has remarkably little selection when it comes to food. It’s pretty much…the Dodger dog. Nathan didn’t think anything else was needed, of course, but I finally found a “Brooklyn Pizza” place to satisfy my palette.

The four of us enjoying the game.

Nathan had warned us that Dodger fans come late…like a couple innings into the game…he was right. The place was pretty empty at the start of the game, but ended up filling nicely. It was an exciting game. We got to witness four home runs and a Dodger win against the Cardinals!

Elias stayed back at the hotel with Baba and Ama. We wanted him to come, but it was just too late a night for him. He got spoiled with a new Sheriff Woody toy, and got to go swimming at the hotel pool. It was the first time that neither Nathan or myself was there to put Elias to bed. Apparently our routine works…he didn’t need us at all. I guess we’ll just have to plan another trip to Dodger Stadium at some time in the future so Elias can experience the magic as well.

Party at the Park!

Elias will be turning two years old next week! I know everyone says this…but I can’t believe two years have gone by already. We decided to celebrate with friends and family by having a party at the park. I was quite nervous because even up to early this morning, the forecast was 55 degrees at noon and overcast….but it was a beautiful day! We got to enjoy one more day in the sunshine…it even got into the upper 70’s! Thank you to everyone who came out and helped us celebrate. Here is Elias’ party at the park in pictures:

The cakes! The baseball was totally my idea…although I admit it did not take much creativity on my part. The baseball glove was an idea I saw online and modified to make it fit for us!

When Elias woke up in the morning I had just finished frosting and decorating the cakes. He was very excited when he saw them….even if it looks like he was not. He just woke up in this picture. He kept saying, “cake, cake, cake!”

The park is a perfect place for a party for a two year old. Elias and his friends played on the play ground for an hour or so at the beginning of the party.

Then we all ate lunch. This was not everyone, but it was a wide shot of some of our guests!

Then it was time for some bat and ball! Elias hit me with the ball as I took this picture:

Then he took turns with his friend.

Next it was time for some cake. Here is the birthday boy!

Here he is trying to blow out his candles.

And trying some more…..

“Look, it’s chocolate!”

MMMMM, cake!

Fun on Baba’s back.

Then some fun with friends, nana, and bubbles.

When we got home, we unloaded (that took awhile) and then Elias took a nap. After nap time, he got to open his presents! Elias first opened some Clifford books. He wanted to read them right away so we had to take a break and read one!

Next he opened some awesome shoes, duplos which he later built with his Daddy, a blanket, a fire truck, and some more books. I think we read Brown Bear, Brown Bear about eight times!

Elias had a very fun day. Thank you to everyone who helped make it special for him!

It’s A Boy!

Nathan and I went to our twenty week ultrasound this morning. It’s a boy! We are very excited for Elias to have a little brother. I can’t wait to have a house full of boys. Everything seems to be healthy and normal at this point.

Where It All Began

Eleven years ago (well almost…it was in October) Nathan and I went to Disneyland as part of a trip to California for a band competition. We held hands for the first time in Disneyland. We were in New Orleans Square, down by the water. There is a slight disagreement between us as to which hand it was…but no matter. It was here that our romance began. Here we are in that same spot…eleven years later…with our wonderful son and another on the way! Who would have thought at the time?

Elias loved our family trip to Disneyland. I’ll write more about it later. For now, I’m just enjoying the memories.

Haircut #3

Elias had his third haircut today. He really needed it…his hair was constantly in his eyes. He did really well for the most part…got a bit upset when he couldn’t get his hands out from underneath the cape/drape thing, but other than that was a cooperative boy.

Here are some pictures I snapped of him while he ate lunch after we got home.
