H E R S H E Y S spells…….

Yesterday I took both boys to the grocery store in the late afternoon to pick up some essentials. It was one of those really lucky, harmonious shopping trips where no one complains or has any tantrums or asks you to buy a billion things. Two people stopped me…one to say my boys were awesome…and one to say that moms are awesome. I’m not trying to brag…all shopping trips are not like this…I’m trying to set the scene.

Since everything was going so well, I was in the mood to offer treats, something I don’t do often at the store. I told Elias he could pick a treat for himself and a treat for Daddy. He chose some honey roasted almonds for Daddy, and settled on his fave, a Hershey’s chocolate bar for himself.

He held on to that thing, but gave no fuss when I asked him to give it up at the check out line. As soon as it was back in his hands, he said, “I’d like some in the car.” I told him maybe he could have a bit as soon as he was buckled in.

We got to the car, and I was unloading Simon and the groceries from our cart. Elias climbed into his car seat, and held up the chocolate bar. He pointed to each letter and said aloud:

“H – E – R – S – H – E – Y – S……That spells chocolate!”

My first thought was how cute it was. My second thought was…..if that isn’t the most perfect commercial for Hershey’s, I don’t know what is. Too bad I didn’t get it on video!

I buckled in my boys and let my little man have a taste of his beloved chocolate. The apple does not fall far from the tree there….I may have stolen a square when he wasn’t looking. He shouldn’t have the whole thing anyway…right?

Free Play at OGA!

The Oregon Gymnasitcs Acadamy brings a lot of fun memories for me. My brother was quite an accomplished gymnast for awhile in his youth. When I was in high school, I would occasionally pick him up from practice. For some reason, I had never gotten around to taking Elias there. In fact, he doesn’t have much experience with gymnastics or tumbling at all. So when our MOMS club was offered a free play time there, I snapped up the opportunity to go.

Elias and Simon both had a ton of fun there, but Elias was able to a lot more of course since Simon is just barely walking. The boys enjoyed the trampolines and the foam pit the most. My pictures weren’t very good, but I will still post them since you can still tell how much fun was being had:

Trampolines! These were Elias’ favorite by far.

P1160803Everyone had fun in the foam pit…even Mommy for a little bit:

P1160793 P1160806I can definitely see myself signing the boys up for a class here in the future. The teachers were patient and good with the young ones. And everyone had a blast. We’ll wait a bit, though, because we just committed to swimming lessons for the spring. It’s funny I never thought I would be bringing my own kids here when I used to pick up my little brother…..

Things We Never Thought We’d Do…..

Becoming a parent means doing a lot of things you never thought you’d do. There are the gross ones like ‘pick someone else’s nose’ or ‘pee with someone else hanging on your leg.’ There are the tedious ones like ‘cutting toast into amazingly intricate shapes just so  your child will eat it without complaining’ or ‘reshelving the entire bookshelf after your barely one year old thinks it is fun to remove them.’

Then there are the just plain bizarre ones:

P1160765Last Saturday morning I woke up with a pretty stiff/sore back and neck. I asked Nathan to give me a massage. The boys both watched as I got my massage and for some reason, thought it was pretty hilarious. When my turn was over, Elias really wanted his polar bear to get a massage as well. I bet Nathan never thought he’d be massaging a stuffed animal.

Cousins!

P1160665Elias and Simon were lucky to have their cousins in town a couple weekends ago. Elias talks about his cousins all the time, and he had a lot of fun playing with them. They arrived at our house late Friday night after the boys were in bed. When Elias woke up Saturday morning, he could hear his cousins voices down the hall, and he was a little nervous. However, as soon as Audrey walked into his room he was very excited to play with her. All nervousness was gone.

P1160671We partied a lot over the weekend with various birthday parties, but the kids had some down time just to play as well. They particularly enjoyed the marble track. Simon enjoyed getting more attention than usual as well. What a blessing it is to be able to spend time with family!

Simon’s 1st Birthday: Family Party

Simon’s cousins, and an extra auntie and uncle were in town over president’s day weekend, so we decided to have his family party then for an extra large gathering. Here is the birthday fun in pictures:

Elias helped me to decorate Simon’s birthday cupcakes before everyone came over:

P1160681While I made dinner, Simon decided to check the present pile and remove all bows:

P1160692I made Simon’s favorite meal – Spaghetti with meat sauce, bread sticks, and strawberries.

P1160695We couldn’t fit everyone at one table, but we moved everyone out into the family room so we could all at least be in close quarters.

P1160698Simon enjoyed his meal.

P1160701After clean up, we went to open presents. Auntie Kristy made him a toy box similar to the one she made for Elias at one year. Now it’s a tradition!

P1160707Elias “helped” open the presents.

P1160711Then we all played with the loot:

P1160725Finally, it was time for dessert. Simon enjoyed it when we sang happy birthday:

A Surprise For Nana!

About three or four years ago, I started getting some ideas together for a surprise birthday party. I talked with Nathan about them, and I patiently waited until the next “big” birthday…my mother-in-law’s 60th.

Last August I ran the idea by Nathan’s sister, but the planning didn’t start in earnest until December or so. We decided on a guest list, arranged for Nathan’s sister to secretly come in town, covertly got phone numbers from Nana’s phone, sent out invitations, and waited for the day to come.

The Ramlals arrived late Friday night of Presidents day weekend, and we had the party on Saturday afternoon. I had told Nana that she would be coming to a housewarming party. I thought it was a good idea so that she would expect lots of cars at our house. I even sent her a fake invitation.

The guests arrived, and we all sat in anticipation for her to arrive. I have to say that the surprise went splendidly. Nana was very happily surprised….shocked actually. I wish so much that I had the camera ready to get her face when we opened the door. I think she was mostly just happy to see her granddaughters…but she seemed pretty happy about the party and all of the other friends who came as well. We enjoyed a few hours celebrating Nana. Here are some pictures of the party:

Dirt

I’ve been looking outside longingly for the last week or two. I’ve noticed weeds are starting to grow in our yard. Now, you wouldn’t think weeding would be all that exciting…and I’m sure I will tire of it soon enough, but I’ve really been wanting to get out there and weed the yard. My yard. It’s a new thing for us to have a yard, and I was mostly just excited to have a place for the boys to run around, but there is another joy in a yard…in taking care of it. So I wanted those weeds gone.

Saturday we were busy all day, but Sunday it didn’t rain, and the Elias went out to play baseball so I suited Simon up in his coat and shoes, and we went out to play as well. Our grass is like a mud bath right now so Simon promptly got his cute overalls all muddy. I guess I’ll get good with mud stains.

I got my trowel and some gardening gloves and a bag for my yard waste, and got to work on the weeds. Weeding is not something I’ve done much of in my life. Hopefully I didn’t take out any real plants. But I have to say that the areas I worked on do look much nicer.

Soon after I started weeding, Simon followed me. He sat down, grabbed a large handful of top soil, and put it in his mouth. He spit it out, and studied his muddied hand for awhile before Nathan came over to rescue him. Like the good little boy Simon is, he went in for a second handful just to be sure it actually did taste horrible. All I could think about during the whole thing was how glad I was that he even has the opportunity to eat dirt…something he never had a chance to do in the condo. Does that make me a bad mom?

Nathan soon took Simon inside to clean up and get a diaper change. I continued with the weeding and listening to the plink of Elias’ balls flying off the tee. Eventually, he lost interest because I wouldn’t come play with him, and came to see what I was doing. I tried to show him how to pull up the weeds, roots and all, but he was more interested in digging. He just dug and dug in that dirt, and I was so happy. I couldn’t have cared less about how dirty he got (he actually stayed pretty clean considering). I was just so happy to be working in our yard, my son joining me “working” with the dirt.

Of course the rain came eventually and ended our fun. But I’m sure there will be plenty more dirt in our future.

Simon’s 1st Birthday In Pictures

It’s hard to believe that one year ago today we were at the hospital just meeting Simon, our little bundle of joy. He has changed all of our lives so much for the better. Today he turned one and is officially a “child,” not a baby. Where did the time go? I just stared at him all day today in wonder.

Unfortunately, Simon came down with a cold. He was not miserable the whole day or anything, but he definitely wasn’t himself. Here was Simon’s special day:

I left early in the morning while the boys were still sleeping to drop off one of our cats for oral surgery. (A different story). When I got home a little before 8 am, Simon was still asleep. I was happy he got the rest, but even happier that I got to be there when he woke up on his birthday.

P1160549After getting him dressed, we went downstairs, and Elias immediately drew everyone’s attention to the gifts we had wrapped the night before. I told him we had to wait until Daddy gets home, but Simon proceeded to take the bows off anyway, and Elias just couldn’t resist one of the gifts that wasn’t really wrapped. Here is Baba and the birthday boy.

P1160551After breakfast, we played a bit. Simon really loves cars. You can see he often has a dazed look throughout the day due to being sick, but he was happy a lot of the day too.

P1160562 P1160571The boys made another attempt to convince me to let them open presents. I don’t know why this picture is so dark…it was about 9:45 a.m.

P1160575Simon was super tired so I put him down for a nap, but he woke up after only 10 minutes or so. He was upset because he couldn’t breathe through his nose, and wouldn’t go back to sleep. So much for a nap. I loaded the boys in the stroller with some snacks and took them on a walk for some fresh air at Noble Woods park which is down the street from our house. Since it was his birthday, I let Simon try the snack cup for the first time. It’s like a right of passage for a little kid to get to eat goldfish crackers out of a snack cup. He loved it. He did not eat them fast enough, though, and Elias “helped” him get them out…a few may have been lost in Elias’ tummy.

P1160581After the walk we stayed outside a bit since it was so nice. Elias rode his tricycle and Simon just watched. We went inside for lunch, more play time, and a nap. This time Simon napped 30 or 40 minutes or so…better but still not good. That’s less than an hour total of nap time for a sick boy! He woke up just in time for Daddy to get home. Nathan came home a bit early today. Yay! Once Nathan was home, Elias immediately jumped on the opening presents topic again. Simon was a bit dazed from just waking up, but we decided it was an ok time. First, we posed under Simon’s birthday sign. I put it up last night after the boys went to bed and Simon noticed it right away this morning!

P1160590Then Elias got to work helping Simon with the wrapping paper.

P1160592It was all just a bit too much fun for Simon, though. On the second gift, Simon wasn’t opening, so Elias grabbed Simon’s hand and tried to move it to open the present. Simon wasn’t having any of that business. (Notice Elias in the background hastily unwrapping in the mayhem)

P1160596But we got Simon calmed down. He did enjoy his presents, and will continue to do so!

P1160609After present opening, I had to go pick up our cat from the vet. She had come out of anesthesia and was waiting for us to come get her. I left the boys to play with Daddy and went to rescue our kitty. When I got home it was dinner time. Simon had his favorite meal: spaghetti.

P1160611Then, I got out the birthday dessert and candles. I am saving the fancy baking for his birthday parties, but I couldn’t let his real birthday go without something special. He got to try a chocolate chip cookie! We all sang Happy birthday to Simon.

P1160618Then Simon got to eat to cookie. At first his expression said, “hmmm…this is good!”

P1160622Then his expression said, “Must eat more cookie before it is taken away!”

P1160624Good thing it was bath night…..the boys played a bit more while I cleaned up, and then it was off to bed. I have a one year old now…again!

Happy Birthday to Nana!

A week or so ago we celebrated a very special birthday for a very special person! We had Nana over for dinner to celebrate her big day. The boys had a lot of fun playing with her as usual, and we got to enjoy some traditional birthday things. They helped her open her present…some luxury towels…then proceeded to play with them:

P1160317We all sang happy birthday over the birthday brownies:

P1160324And we enjoyed the birthday dessert. Elias had to wait until his first birthday to enjoy sweets for the first time. We allowed Simon to try some brownie a few days early. He thoroughly enjoyed it. Here you can see him digging down into his high chair for dropped crumbs…something he never usually does!

P1160327Happy birthday, Nana! We love you!

Cupboards and an Early Birthday Present

Well, the snow was still here and in full force today. We had to cancel Simon’s first birthday party because of the weather. I was very bummed about this turn of events! We made the best of it, though, and played out in the snow again. Actually, Simon wanted nothing to do with the snow so I put him in the ergo and carried him around while he napped. Elias and Daddy played, built another snow mountain…I mean Frosty the snowman….and I just enjoyed the falling snow, the crunch under my feet, the snores of my almost one year old, and the sounds of my happy family playing.

After nap time, the freezing rain had set in, and we elected not to go back out into the snow. Unfortunately, we did not have enough provisions because we did not know this storm would last so long. Nathan put on his boots and walked the short distance to Albertsons to provide us with enough food to last until Monday. Hopefully that will be enough this time!

We were starting to feel some cabin fever so we decided to work on the house a bit. Nathan started putting child locks on the bathroom cupboards. We’ve been having to keep all of the cleaning supplies and chemicals up on the counters because Simon gets into the cupboards. It had been long enough…we’ve been living here over a month now…so Nathan went to work. He got one bathroom completely finished before he had to hike in the snow to Albertsons. The boys must have realized that their cupboard play opportunities were running short. They both headed into the other bathroom (which still does not have child locks) and proceeded to have a lot of fun. It was their last chance!

Elias shut the door on me at the last moment...but you can see him barely sticking out of Simon's side.

After dinner, we decided to let the boys have fun and work out some energy by giving Simon his birthday present early. He did have to cancel his birthday party after all. We got him a slide! It will work inside or outside so it is perfect. Both of the boys really enjoyed this slide. Although…we realized that they were more tired than we had thought so after a bit of play, it was bath and bedtime for them!

Elias could barely contain himself which Nathan put the thing together.

Even though it was Simon's present, Elias got the first slide.

Simon's turn!
