A Neighbor Hunt

We’ve been stuck inside a lot the last couple of days so today after Simon woke up from his afternoon nap I decided we just had to get out. There is so much beauty out there right now with the changing of the seasons. I want to start teaching Elias about the beauty of creation. I want him to appreciate the beauty all around us. So I decided that we would go on a “nature hunt” in which we look for the colors of fall out in our neighborhood. I explained the whole thing to Elias, and at first he wanted to ride in the stroller. I told him that he needed to walk so he could look better, and he was ok with that. As we left the building, he exclaimed, “We’re going on a neighbor hunt!”

The first thing Elias found was one of those “helicopter” things…I think it is the seed of a maple tree. He enjoyed it for a few moments, and then tossed it to the wind.

P1150245 In the beginning, Elias was not only interested in finding things, but he wanted to take the pictures himself. So with some supervision, and some help pointing in the general direction of what he spotted, he took the following pictures on our nature hunt. ( I also cropped a few of them a bit) They are quite beautiful:

P1150248 P1150259 P1150262 P1150266 P1150271 P1150274 P1150283 P1150269Simon was (of course) with us as well. I recently made a switch to the ergo instead of the bjorn, and I will never look back. He enjoys himself back there, and carrying your child on the back is way better!

P1150258Elias found this leaf and was excited because it had “lots of colors!” He held it up in the air saying, “Look it’s beautiful!”

P1150256He also found a few more leaves, and an evergreen tree that he was excited about:

P1150250 P1150263After awhile he got more excited about running around outside than looking for colors of fall or taking pictures. He just ran and ran, laughing and yelling. I was so glad as I watched him run that I had taken him outside. The boy needed to run around a bit…or a lot! We walked about a mile total, and by the end he had run for about half of it (forcing me to walk pretty fast to keep up). He had bright pink flushed cheeks. That’s how I know I did my job correctly. Flushed cheeks are a sign of life being lived.

P1150267

P1150279Near the end, Elias found a stick he liked. I told him to hold it up so that I could take a picture of it. He waved it around and around, so I told him to hold still for a few seconds. This is what I got:

P1150285You can just see the “come on mom” written all over his face.

Finally, I made him stop to take a picture with me before we went back inside. We had so much fun. (Poor Simon is not pictured, but he is back there behind me)

Surprise! (From Uncle Greg)

We received a surprise in the mail from Uncle Greg and Shaina today. When we got home from our morning outings, there were two boxes on our doorstep. One was quite large! I made Elias wait until Daddy was home to open them, but he was sure excited!

So this is for you, Uncle Greg, since you couldn’t see him open it in person:

Elias first opened some hot wheels cars. He was very excited about the “race cars.” I had to work hard to even convince him to open the big box! He wanted to play right away.

P1150214Elias enjoyed unwrapping his second gift too. A race track!

P1150216Then he played with his cars while Daddy put together the big race track.

P1150219Everyone got in on the fun while Daddy built the track.

P1150222Nathan was very excited. He said, “I always wanted a motorized race track!”

P1150225

With it all finally put together we had 20 or so minutes of fun before it was time for bed. Elias learned how to work the track gears pretty quickly. Here he is focused on the task at hand. You can’t see the car in the picture, but it is whizzing around somewhere.

P1150235So…thanks Uncle Greg! Elias loves it, and I’m sure it will provide lots of fun.

A Little Too Much Fun?

Today we had a lot of fun. Possibly a little too much fun. We filled our day to the brim, which was wonderful, but hard on poor Simon who got only two twenty or so minute naps and hardly any time to crawl around and play. I would never have dreamed of scheduling such a full day when Elias was this age, but I guess that is what happens to the poor second child.

We started out at Sunday School. Elias was super excited about it today. Nathan taught the grade 1-4 class, and I substituted for someone who was sick so Simon went in the nursery. Then we all went to church. We went home for a quick lunch, and then headed out to the pumpkin patch! Elias wanted the first pumpkin he saw, but we convinced him to look around a bit more. He was very excited about choosing pumpkins. Here is Elias next to his first choice:

P1150128

And a family shot. Simon is sleeping on one of his short naps of the day:

P1150131

Uncle Scott and Daddy had way too much fun while Elias chose his pumpkins:

P1150137Here is the last one Elias picked out. He had already chosen three so we told him that was enough, but he liked this one so well that he tried to lift it himself. We decided he could get it if it was for Simon…but we ended up with 74 total pounds of pumpkin…it’s a record for us.

P1150142Uncle Scott decided he needed to teach Elias the manly skill of pumpkin lifting.

P1150147Simon woke up just in time for a photo-op.

P1150155 P1150157After we purchased our pumpkins, Elias decided he wanted to ride the cow train. He specified that he wanted Baba to ride with him. Poor Baba probably has a bruise from trying to fit his long legs in there.

P1150170Next we headed off to Daddy’s softball game. Elias had a blast watching and cheering on the team for the first few innings. Then he decided he wanted to play a little baseball of his own. We are now practicing hitting pitched balls rather than hitting off the tee. The St. Juan Diego Screaming Eagles won 19-1. Great game!

P1150178 P1150183Nana met us at the game, and then took us out to Red Robin for dinner for Elias’ birthday. Then we headed to her house for a birthday celebration. Elias was very excited to open more presents. Simon was interested in them too…but you can see the look in Elias’ eyes here: “Hands off bozo!”

P1150184We forced Elias to be sung to before he could open presents.

P1150190Nana got Elias a marbleworks set among other things. He really loved it! Thanks Nana!

P1150201After much fun, it was time to go home. Poor Simon screamed the entire way home. When I went to get him out of his car seat his face was soaked with tears and he was just closing his eyes, fist in mouth, crying. Was it a little too much fun? Perhaps. But it was still a wonderful day. The boys are sleeping now…hopefully having good dreams.

Our Halloween Tree

P1150119I’ve been itching to use some of my limited artist skills. I haven’t been doing enough arts and crafts because frankly I’ve just been too tired. Planning for Elias’ art activities has been enough. I had seen a picture of a tree silhouette that someone had painted onto a pumpkin and liked it a lot. I bought some small pumpkins to try it out, but Elias got to them first for one of his art projects. So yesterday, when we walked to the dollar tree for some batteries, and I saw the black poster board, I picked some up figuring I could make a bigger tree silhouette. After we put the boys to bed, Nathan was super tired from his adventures in San Fransisco and zonked out on the couch. I had some time to myself! I got out the poster board, and had at it. I have to say I am very pleased with the results. Now we have our very own Halloween tree!

P1150123I drew the tree freehand, and then cut it out. I wanted to place an owl in the tree, but my attempts at drawing an owl were just comical. So I went for bats instead. I have to admit that animals are not my forte, and I could not draw a bat either. I ended up finding a bat online, printing it out, and tracing it onto the poster board.

So there you have it…our Halloween tree! It looks pretty good on our sliding glass door!

A Little Shadow

Simon is getting more and more mobile every day. Crawling is second nature. Standing is getting easier. Climbing is a possibility. He is my little shadow. Simon follows me around as I fold laundry or make dinner. He is able to play more and more now as well. When he is not tagging along with me, he is Elias’ little shadow. Elias is not sure how to take this new development. I hear, “Mommy you pick up Simon!” quite often as well as “That’s not for you, Simon!” I think one of my most commonly repeated phrases these days is, “Sometimes it’s fun to play alone and sometimes it’s fun to play together.” The boys have gotten some fun opportunities to play together in the last couple of days.

Swords! Simon got in on the sword action. Uncle Scott left these over at our house, and Elias has taken maximum advantage of that fact. He mostly likes to play swords with Nathan or me, but he has played with Simon a few times.

"What's going on big brother?"

“What’s going on big brother?”

"Come on let me see! What's in there?"

I saved up Pampers Reward points for a long time and finally got enough for this elephant ball toy. It is accessible for Simon's age, and still fun for Elias' age and beyond!

Elias the 3 Year Old

Elias is 3 years old today. I can hardly believe it. Three just sounds so big. Where has the time gone? Nathan and I were realizing at dinner tonight that we have been parents for more than 10%  of our lives. It doesn’t seem that long at all!

Elias is very proud to be three. He’s been saying for weeks: “After my birthday, I be three!” Today when he woke up we talked about it being his birthday, and he said, “I’m three!”

Our celebrations actually began on Friday evening when Elias helped me bake cookies for one of his birthday celebrations. He added sprinkles and decorations to my good old fashioned chocolate chip cookies, and he said, “Mommy you better take a picture of me.”

P1140989Saturday morning he went to sports class, and then we spent the afternoon preparing for my family to come over. (Well…Ama and Baba and Uncle Scott and Auntie Kristy). We put up some decorations and prepared a bit of food. Elias requested a baseball party with chocolate cupcakes. I’m not sure why he requested chocolate cupcakes…he doesn’t eat them. In fact, he doesn’t really eat any sweets except for graham crackers and plain milk chocolate. So I made up a fun dessert activity. I wanted him to eat something special on his birthday!

P1140992 P1140993Elias really likes balloons so I purchased a couple for him…although I felt a bit guilty for using up the helium. The joy on his face was fun to see nonetheless. Here he is very anxious for my parents and his aunt and uncle to arrive.

P1140996We ate dinner, opened presents and watched the annual slideshow together.

P1150022Then it was time for dessert. After everyone left, I asked Elias what his favorite part of the party was. His response? “When everyone sing the song.” When we sang happy birthday, Elias face just lit up. It was quite fun to see.

P1150024We ended the evening with a bit of play. No good party ends without some good sword fighting. Elias got in some sword fights with Baba, Uncle Scott, and Daddy. Uncle Scott left his “swords” here by accident so we’ve gotten the joy of sword fighting each day since then as well.

P1150031Sunday morning we went to church and Elias got a special birthday blessing from Father Jeff. When we got home he played a bit with his new toys. Unfortunately, Nana is sick so we will have to celebrate with her another day.

P1150033This morning Elias woke up on his big day! We started out by going to art class. Actually, I felt sad because he was screaming and crying that he didn’t want to go to art class and that we had to go to Ama and Baba’s. I forced him in the car and drove him to class. As soon as he saw the building, he was happy as anything, and talking about which activities he wanted to do first. He was super excited to see teacher Selene, and even gave her a hug!

After art class we ran a couple of errands to the post office and the library…boring, I know for a birthday, but it had to be done. When we got home, we spent the rest of the day playing inside. Elias even took a nap which was pretty amazing. (Although Simon did not nap due to teething. The universe is plotting against me).

Daddy had to come home late, but when he got home, we gave Elias a couple presents of our own.

P1150052The boys had fun playing together with the train set. We got him a bunch of new pieces to go along with what he had, and some art stencils which we’ll hopefully try out tomorrow.

P1150058Elias requested grilled cheese and life cereal for dinner. I wanted to try to get a picture of Elias on his third birthday. He had something different in mind than I did. He just wanted to make funny faces at the camera. We had quite a bit of fun taking the pictures. Here are a couple of cute pictures of my silly (three year old) boy.

Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Oo)

We’ve been talking a lot about the letter Oo the past week or two around here. Elias gets a bit confused on the letters which have more than one sound, so this was a tough one. To him, O says “ah” like Octopus.

Unfortunately, my grand plans to get back into our normal routine have not been realized. We just cannot shake this sickness that has entered our house. Simon is coming on three weeks sick. I am almost at two weeks, and heading to the doctor tomorrow, and Elias is sick now as well after starting out with a horrible fever. But enough complaining for now….I had a lot of grand plans for letter Oo, here are the few of them we actually managed to do:

O is for Orca

We checked out the book O is for Orca from the library. It is a pacific northwest alphabet book that Elias really enjoyed. We also checked out a couple of other books about Orcas and read them together. At the dinner table later in the evening Elias was able to recall a couple facts he had learned about Orcas so I called it a success!

O is for Ocean

I got the idea for an ocean mural here. We have a nice open wall in our hallway, and Elias had never done a mural before. Elias really wanted to use watercolors so instead of doing the ocean shapes mural, I asked him to name ocean animals he knew. Then I found a coloring page of those animals to print out. He water colored the pages, and we waited for them to dry. In the meantime, I set up the mural with contact paper and painters tape. It was more difficult and time consuming to get up on the wall than I had imagined, but it was worth it in the end. After quiet time, Elias got to stick his pieces of art up on the mural. I also let him color in the ocean. He loved the activity, and goes back to it every day.

O is for Oregon

For Oregon we looked at his maps, talked about how it is the state where we live, and read Goodnight Oregon.

O is for Ohio

We looked at pictures from our recent trip to Ohio, and decided on a couple to send to Uncle Greg (who lives there).

O is for Owl

We read Owls by Gail Gibbons, and did a fun Owl craft. I took out our craft foam, and had Elias choose colors he wanted for different body parts of the owl. I cut out the pieces, and he glued them together. Elias loves googly eyes, and wanted to put more than two on. So we made two normal owls and three monster owls. Here are his creations:

Simon’s Solid Food Adventures

P1140967We started Simon on solid foods a couple days after he turned six months old. Let’s just say the reception was luke warm. Tonight we decided to try something a little different…quinoa! Nathan or I had never had it either so it was new for everyone. Simon did not get particularly enthusiastic, but he did eat a tiny bit of it, and enjoyed feeling it in his hands. It’s a good start! (Now if only we could get Elias to try it too!) After putting some in his mouth a few times, P1140966and getting it all over his hands, arms, and bib, Simon decided to see what it would look like on the floor. Lovely. I’m glad he had some fun, though. The poor little guy has been sick for almost two weeks now!

Simon – 7 Months

simon 11Simon is seven months old now, and he’s changing so fast. He now can do a real crawl rather than an army crawl. He’s pretty slow at it, but it is definitely more comfortable than the army crawl so he prefers it. Simon also pulls up on whatever he can these days. He pulls up to his knees…not his feet….but it lets him see into the couch where his brother his playing or reach a toy that is up high. Once Simon actually did pull up onto his feet using his brother’s car ramp toy. He promptly lost balance, fell all the way back the floor, and pulled the whole ramp on top of him. There were quite a few tears after that! In fact, Simon gets a number of bruises and scrapes because his sense of adventure and perseverance is more advanced than his balance and coordination.

boys 11Simon has also gotten to enjoy a few new things this month. Elias has really started to bond with Simon. Elias holds him. He hugs him. And they even take baths together in the big bath! Simon absolutely loves taking a bath in the big tub with Elias. He laughs and laughs every time Elias splashes. It is the most fun we’ve had in a long time watching them together. Simon still wants to be wherever Elias is. Most of the time Elias is pretty good with him, but occasionally he gets frustrated. “Mommy you pick up Simon!” is  phrase I hear when I know he has reached the end of his patience. I try to force Elias to play with Simon (or at least next to him) but sometimes Simon is very overbearing. He has taken toys out of Elias’ hands, crawled up onto Elias’ lap, knocked down his towers, and more! Simon has to start learning how to play as well I guess!

Unfortunately, Simon also has his first cold. It is a persistent little bug. He’s had a runny nose for 8 or so days now. If it persists much longer I will have to take him to the doctor!

We love Simon so much. He is such a joy.

Sunday School!

P1140904

Elias getting ready to leave for Sunday School

Today was Elias’ first day of Sunday School! He has participated in the church Christmas pageant, and a few inter-generational activities with the church school in the last year or so, but today he actually got to go to his first Godly Play class.

As soon as we got there, he got to put on his name tag. He was super excited because it came on a lanyard. Both Nathan and I have badges at home from work, and Elias has wanted a badge of his own for awhile now. His name tag looked just like a badge! Elias also loves stickers so he was happy to put a sticker on the attendance chart. They got him off to a good start!

When it was time to actually go into the classroom,

Elias and Daddy just outside his classroom. He is grasping his name tag tightly, and looking at his teacher in the doorway!

Elias and Daddy just outside his classroom. He is grasping his name tag tightly, and looking at his teacher in the doorway!

he did just fine in the hands of Tony, Alison, and Nick, his teachers. He looked a tiny bit nervous, but he didn’t really need me at all.

When I went to pick him, up, I asked Elias what he did at Sunday School. He said, “We ate crackers!”

I couldn’t really pry anything else out of him while we were at church so I was a bit disappointed. But later when I asked him about his favorite part, he said “my favorite was the blue king. There was three kings. A red, a yellow, and blue. And baby Jesus and Joseph and Mary.” I am assuming these were props during the story telling portion of the class. His teacher also told us that he played with play-doh.

So all in all it was a success! Here’s to many more happy Sunday mornings!
