Snuggling

EliasBecause of that darn c-section I am unable to lift anything heavier than Simon for 6 weeks or so. This includes Elias. Unfortunately, he has a very hard time understanding this. We’ve had to teach him how to climb onto the changing table himself (we may regret this later…). The hardest part, though, is when he needs to be comforted and I can’t pick him up. I’ve tried cuddling him on the floor, but it’s just not the same.

SimonI had thought that his requests to be picked up were just part of his every day routine, but the other day I had some insight that made me think he may feel left out or jealous a bit. Elias told his Daddy that “Mommy snuggles Simon.” I realized that I never explained to Elias why I can hold Simon all the time. I only tried to explain why I couldn’t hold Elias.

I’ve made an effort to snuggle Elias in the rocking chair where he can climb himself, or on the couch. He has seemed to treasure those times as much as me. All I know is that I love both my boys. But the first thing I’m going to do when the doctor gives me clearance is pick up Elias and hold him tight.

Cookies!

Since I am the one with the milk, I end up spending a lot of time with
Simon. I try to be with Elias as much as I can…but in the beginning he didn’t want to be anywhere near Simon, hence, he didn’t want to be anywhere near me. Once he actually hid behind the rocking chair, pushing me away. That sure brought tears to my eyes. Now that he is getting more comfortable with Simon, I get to spend more time with Elias. Nathan is also being great about taking Simon for awhile so that I can have some quality time with Elias.

One of the things that Elias loves to do is decorate sugar cookies. Nathan took him to the grocery store yesterday morning and let him pick out any sprinkles he wanted. (He picked blue sugar crystals). Then we baked some sugar cookies together. This morning we decorated them.

Here is our cookie baking in pictures:

Progress

The boys brushing their teeth yesterday morning.

We are making slow, but steady progress in many areas in our household. We are starting to find a rhythm and routine. Things are starting to feel more under control. (Nathan claims that the state of the kitchen has no effect on his mental state…but for me…bare counters and clean floors provide a bit more sanity than piles of dirty dishes everywhere!) We’ll probably feel great just in time for Nathan to go back to work and everything to be thrown out of whack again. But it is nice to feel human again….to not feel so desperately lost. Nathan and I make a good team, and we’ve had lots of help (especially with meals).

Elias seems to be doing better as well. He now very occasionally cries due to Simon’s crying, but has developed a different habit for most of the cries….Elias whispers. When he hears Simon make any sort of noise…except for his nursing noise which Elias has dubbed “the laughing monkey”….Elias just starts whispering. It’s a coping mechanism, I guess, but I like it more than the crying. Having two crying at once was difficult.

Elias is becoming more and more interested in Simon and what he is doing. He is able to play sometimes now with Simon in the room. He is doing better at meal times when Simon is at the table. He has wanted to watch a few diaper changes. He asked me to read him a story when I was holding Simon. We are seeing progress which makes me happy.

Tomorrow we rejoin society by going to church. We are excited, but it will be difficult to get out the door in time…let alone learning how to manage two children out in public!

We Had Cabin Fever…We Might Be Bad Parents

We had a bit of cabin fever this morning. Things were actually going very well on the home front. Elias showed more interest in Simon, and did not cry when I had to change Simon’s first diaper blowout (which involved some wailing on Simon’s part). But we still wanted to get out and do something fun. We decided to drive to the park for some bat and ball.

Unfortunately, our timing stunk. It didn’t rain all morning…until the moment we walked outside. It was sprinkling when we left the stairwell so we decided to just go for it anyway. We might not win parents of the year award for that decision. By the time we got to the park it was raining pretty hard. I offered to stay in the car with Simon, but we decided…no….we were going to have some family fun. It is Oregon after all, right?

Elias had some fun hitting the ball off of the tee. Then he decided he wanted to go check out the play ground. Unfortunately, we didn’t really want to let him slide and he couldn’t really understand why we were at the park without going on the slide. After about 15 minutes, Simon hadn’t had a rain drop touch him yet, but the other three of us were soaked! I was freezing so I know Elias probably was too…but he didn’t want to leave. He was having the time of his life.

After quite a temper tantrum, we finally got everyone back into the car. As we pulled into the parking lot of our place, we discovered it had stopped raining. What timing!

Let’s just call it bad luck. Or lack of sleep. Or maybe just some good ‘ol Oregonian fun.

Simon – The First Week

It seems like it’s been about a month since I posted…not a week. And with the amount of pictures I’m about to upload you’d probably think so too! It has been both an amazing and a challenging week for our family. It is taking me multiple sittings to get this post done…I can’t quite get the hang of having two kids even with Daddy home….and with both boys napping earlier, I just had to stop and take a nap too. We’ll all adjust in time.

I am recovering well from surgery. I laugh when I think about how much more I am doing at six days after surgery than I was doing six days after Elias was born. It’s a necessity…and it’s good…but hopefully it won’t slow the recovery overall if I am pushing it now. Simon is doing really well. He weighed 9 pounds, 15 ounces at birth, and today at his appointment weighed 10 pounds 5 ounces! The doctors are amazed that he surpassed his birth weight so quickly. He keeps me up often at night, but is generally very sweet and mild tempered.

Elias is taking the transition roughly. He has so much anxiety surrounding Simon’s crying. It’s not attention getting or jealousy. He truly is scared. He sweats and clasps his hands and sobs inconsolably. It is something he is working through. Yesterday morning, though, he invited Simon into his room to look at his old crib, and he talks about Simon constantly even though he doesn’t really want to be near him much. Lots of people say that Elias will eventually work through this and that it’ll all be fine. I know that. Sometimes I feel I am walking through a dark forest. I know I will make it through to the other side. But people telling me that the light is there doesn’t make it any easier to walk in the dark. I just love both my boys and sometimes feel that I have to sacrifice the good of one when I am with the other. This is our new reality. We are a family of four. I thank God all the time for Nathan’s job and that he is home right now!

Now for the fun part…the pictures!

Wednesday, February 13th

Simon was born on Ash Wednesday, 2/13/13, at 8:10 in the morning. He was a healthy little boy…9 on the Apgar scale at both times. Elias was the first to meet Simon, but lots of other family came to meet him as well! I was amazed at how much Simon looks like Elias when Elias was born.

Happy Valentines Day! One Day Old!

We celebrated Valentines Day in the hospital with our new little one. My parents offered to bring us a nice dinner…but I didn’t feel like eating much so Nathan just chose a favorite from Red Robin to go and I ate some hospital soup. It all worked out. I got to see all three of my favorite boys so I was happy.

Coming Home! – Three Days Old

On Saturday we got to come home. Simon got to meet the kitties…or rather…they got to meet him. We finally got to be home with both our sons. We also got to spend some time with family in the evening. Ama, Baba, Nana, Auntie Erin, and cousin Audrey all came over to visit.

Sunday, Feb 17th – 4 Days Old

Sunday was spent with family. We saw Auntie Erin, cousin Audrey, and Nana in the morning. Elias absolutely loves Audrey! It was so fun to see him play with her and act like such a little boy. Yelling and running and laughing. In the evening, we celebrated Baba’s birthday. Uncle Greg got to meet Simon for the first time, and Elias played hide and seek with Uncle Scott.

The first morning we all woke up at home Elias wanted to play with his train set from baby Simon.

No Visitors – Six Days Old

Tuesday was our first day with no visitors. Just for the record…we love visitors, and we’ve greatly enjoyed and appreciated all the help. But it was nice to just have the four of us for a day. It was also trying at times. Elias is still very nervous around Simon, and Nathan and I were both exhausted at the end of the day. But we got out and had some family fun too. We walked to a nearby park and played “bat and ball.” Elias got to go out on a special grocery store outing with Daddy, and both boys napped at the same time!

Wednesday, February 20th – One Week Old!

Simon is one week old today! He had his newborn doctor appointment, and his first bath in the actual tub (as opposed to sponge baths). He is doing really well. He’s a healthy boy! Elias got to play at Ama and Baba’s while we went to the doctor so he had a blast. Now we are home for the afternoon and both boys are napping…so I’d better hurry and go nap myself! It has been an amazing and emotional week. We love our two boys!

Simon is derived from the Hebrew word for “he has heard.” In accordance with family tradition, Simon’s middle name is Hawaiian, meaning “the love.” The family is resting and recovering. We love him so much!

The Last Day

Elias on his last day as an only child.

Elias on his last day as an only child.

Well…today really was the last day of being a family of three. I think there was definitely a good reason that God chose to make babies come (somewhat) unexpectedly. It is causing me a bit more anxiety knowing exactly when it will happen. (I suppose he could choose to make his entrance in the middle of the night tonight…and then it would be a bit unexpected).

Anyway, in less than 12 hours I’ll almost positively have a baby in my arms. Amazing to think about. My emotions ran the gamut today. Happy and excited. Nervous. But also sad. As I snuggled Elias before his nap I realized I won’t have as much time to do things like that after the baby arrives. I treasured every moment I could with Elias.

Nathan went in to work early so that he could come home early. He timed his arrival home almost perfectly when Elias woke up from his nap. Then we just played and loved on him until it was time to take him to Ama and Baba’s house where he will stay for the duration of our hospital time.

It was Elias’ last day as an only child. He doesn’t really understand what is in store for him…but I hope that he loves his little brother and comes out all the better for it in the end.

With any luck, my next blog post will be a big ol’ picture of Elias and his baby brother.

A Big Thank You!

Nathan and I are feeling quite overwhelmed with gratitude at the moment. Here we are…we don’t even have the baby yet…and people are just being so kind to us. Last week we were given meals three days out of the five in the work week. Today there were mystery flowers at our door (we did later find out who they were from), and this week we already have people offering to bring us meals again! I really appreciate it because even though there is no baby yet, pretty much everything tires me out…including making dinner. We’ve had some really yummy meals in the last week or so.

We also feel lots of love and support from our community. I didn’t really want to go to church and have to put on a big smile this morning and say “yes I’m still pregnant” over and over again. But it didn’t feel that way at all. I just felt supported.

So whether you’ve seen us in person, offered us a meal, or sent a positive thought or prayer our way…thank you! It means a lot!

We’re still hoping that baby #2 will make his entrance as soon as possible. But if Wednesday comes and we just get the show on the road anyway…I know I’ll just be happy to hold this baby in my arms instead of in my abdomen!

Fun Filled Family Saturday

A rare active tiger sighting!

A rare active tiger sighting!

Despite being somewhat depressed that baby #2 has still not made his appearance, we definitely made the most of our Saturday together. It is our last one as a family of three after all. We decided to head to the Oregon Zoo in the morning so that I could walk around a lot, and we could have some fun at the same time. We got to see the baby elephant, Lily, for the first time, and Elias was especially excited about the giraffes and the polar bears.

We headed home after a few cold hours of fun for lunch and nap. Then we headed to the pool yet again for open swim. I love the pool right now because it takes the weight off, and Elias loves to go to open swim with us…he is not a fan of lessons right now even though he does mostly the same things we do with him at open swim…that is a different story for another day. Anyway, Elias had a blast doing motor boats and singing the ABC’s while floating on his back, and doing jumps (real jumps! no holding our hands!).

After the pool we headed over to Sweet Tomatoes for our evening meal, and then came home to play and watch a little bit of Charlie Brown before bed. It really was a perfect day when I wasn’t thinking about being so pregnant. I’m glad we were able to have some family fun before everything in our lives is turned upside down!

Here are some pictures of our zoo adventures:
