Woah, Baby!

Nathan and I are excited to announce that we are expecting another addition to our family this February. Elias will have a little brother or sister on or around February 7th!

We will most definitely write more about it later, but for now we just want to share our good news since I am now into my second trimester.

Elias doesn’t really know what is coming for him yet. He points to my stomach and says “Mama, baby!”….but he does the same thing to Nathan saying “Daddy, baby.” He’ll learn soon enough I guess.

A Day At The Oregon Coast

We’ve been wanting to make a day trip to the coast for a long time. Elias loves playing in the sand, but rarely gets the opportunity. A week or so ago we realized that we had a free Saturday, and decided to fill it up with a good ol’ day at the beach. It was perfect because Elias even woke up a little early this morning. We packed a picnic, and headed to the coast early enough to get a good parking spot…even on a day this nice!

So…here is our day at the beach in pictures. I have to warn you…there are quite a few of Elias playing in the ocean. It was his first time after all…it has to be well documented.

The first thing we did after staking out our spot on the beach was play in the sand. Elias loved building sand castles. He would fill his bucket, ask Nathan or I to flip it really fast into a castle, and then start over again. He enjoyed counting the number of castles he had after each one was made.

After a little over an hour of sand play, we were getting too warm, and were ready to dip our feet in the ocean. Elias was a bit tentative at first. It was pretty cold and the water moving in and out made him a bit disoriented at times.

Here you can see Elias getting a bit more comfortable in the ocean. He is still staying where it is very shallow, but he is having fun splashing around as if it is a wading pool. He made Nathan and I splash as well. He kept saying, “Mama too, Daddy too!”

Now he’s really starting to have fun!

This picture was taken shortly after Elias fell in the water. His head didn’t fully submerge, but he definitely got a good taste of salt water and his clothes were pretty well soaked. After an initial shock, he decided to laugh it off with Daddy.

Elias gets a little more confident. He wants to go a bit deeper!

After falling again, and being chased down by a “large” wave, Elias goes to Mommy for more reassurance.

The falls didn’t phase him for long, though. Here is Elias running in the ocean and having a blast!

Lesson learned for other rookie parents like us: Always bring your child’s swimsuit to the beach. As I was packing this morning, I asked Nathan, “Do you think we should bring his swimsuit?” The reply: “Nah. We aren’t going swimming. We’ll just get our feet wet.” I agreed. Well….with waves, falls, running, splashing, and Elias’ short legs….he got soaked. At least we were smart enough to bring an extra outfit.

I love this boy. He had so much fun. Here he is running to give me a hug toward the end of our ocean play.

Elias and Daddy walking back to our spot on the beach. Those boys are so cute together….uh…I mean…handsome.

After getting back to our beach blanket, we ate a picnic lunch and played in the sand a bit more. Then we decided to head inside for a little air conditioning. Shops….here we come!

Elias having his own private tea party in the toy store in the carousel mall. He let me join him after I took this picture.

Here is Elias preparing for his first carousel ride. He actually rode this carousel when he was 6 months old, but I was on the horse with him that time so it doesn’t really count. This time he went solo!

Here is the carousel in action. Sorry the picture is not as good…I was trying to watch and take a picture. Elias seemed very serious during his ride, but after it was over, begged to go again. “More choo-choo” he kept saying.

After our carousel ride we looked in a few more shops, ate some ice cream, and then went back out to the beach for some more fun. It was much more crowded, and the tide was much farther in so the water was more rough. All that coupled with the fact that it was now 2:45, and Elias was really starting to feel his lack of nap…well we didn’t stay too long. Elias was asleep almost before we got out of the parking lot.

But our adventure was not over yet! As we pulled into our condo complex, we saw fire trucks parked in front of our building….with hoses out…and water everywhere….and our neighbors all evacuated on the front lawn! My first thought was of the cats…and then of hoping it wasn’t our fault! Apparently we had just missed a fire in our building. Thankfully, the fire was contained to just one unit…and it was the opposite side of the building from ours. No one was injured. But it’s still scary to walk by and see all that siding melted off! It is a testament to the good construction of our building, and the quick response of TVFR, I think, that the fire did not spread more on this hot of a day. We decided to head to the air conditioned Applebee’s down the street for dinner, and then had a relaxing evening.

It was a wonderful family day at the beach!

Fountains for a Warm Day

Elias playing in the sand pit

Since yesterday was a warm one, I thought it would be fun to take Elias to the 53rd Ave Park in Hillsboro to play in the fountains. Last summer he couldn’t yet walk, but he loved the fountains. We got to the park and decided to play in the sand pit first. Elias had a lot of fun playing in the sand and watching the other kids. We also got to see lots of planes fly overhead in preparation for the air show.

Elias watching the fountains, and all the kids playing in them.

Next we made the short walk over to the fountain area. I got Elias all dressed in his swimsuit and swim diaper…and he would not go near the fountains. I don’t know if it was too crowded, or he didn’t like the unpredictable-ness of the water (probably a little of both)….but he just wouldn’t go in. He enjoyed sitting in the sun watching the fountains and eating his snack…but that is as far as he would go. It surprised me because he loves swimming at the pool so much. Here’s to hoping he gets over his fear soon!

In this shot I forced Elias to be close to the fountains for a picture....you can see he is uncomfortable.

Summer Bucket List….Finally!

Click on the image to make it larger!

I’ve had a summer bucket list written down on a scratch piece of paper for months…we’ve even checked some things off of it. Now that it is August, I decided it really is time to get the Smith Family Summer 2012 Bucket List all made up and official. I have a place where I display it in the house where we can check off items with a dry erase marker. Our spring bucket list is still in there right now getting all dusty.

Now that I am not working, I decided there are no more excuses. We’ve got some fun stuff in store for us if we complete everything on here. I love summer!

Birds Galore!

Ready to fly off with a seed in his mouth!

One of my favorite joys of the past few days has been watching birds come to visit my bird feeder. My mother-in-law gave me a bird feeder and some seed for my birthday, and I anxiously awaited my first birds. At first I did not see many, but knew they must be coming because the seed was scattered on our porch below the feeder. I occasionally saw them, but could not photograph them.

The other evening, a yellow bird came to our feeder and stayed for quite awhile. Long enough for me to

Another picture of our visitor.

get some pictures. Nathan thinks it is a western meadowlark…the Oregon state bird! But we are not positive….

Anyway, there have been lots of sparrows and some jays who visit every morning, but it was special for me to get an extra long look at this little guy.

This Is The Life

I have to admit….. the first few days after I finished teaching summer school I felt a bit down. I really love teaching, and although it made the rest of my life a bit crazy, it was worth it. And I missed it. Getting back into our normal routine was difficult for me, and it made me crave the “action” that comes along with teaching…at the same time it made me feel guilty for wanting more for myself than taking care of my precious boy.

But we’ve settled in a bit now after a few days. I still hope to return to work full time one day, and I still hope to teach summer school next year. But for now… this is enough. This is the life I’ve been waiting for. Watching my son run around in the grass, listening to him show off his new counting skills, giving him opportunities to help me and to learn and grow, singing “If you’re happy and you know it” and watching him do the actions, having family picnics on perfect summer evenings, holding hands with my husband at the park. These things are enough.

A Zoo Day!

Today Elias and I met some friends at the zoo for a play date. It was fun to be back since I have been working for the last 5 weeks, and it’s been awhile. Elias and his playmate did not interact much. He’s a sit back and watch kind of kid most of the time, and she was a get up and do kind of girl. But we had fun none the less. Here are some fun pictures from our outing:

Elias waiting for our friends to arrive.

One of the first things we saw at the zoo...we also got to see him standing on top of the tree, and climbing down.

Elias taking a snack break while his friend played on the tractor.

Elias got quite excited by seeing the pigs and cows. He kept saying, "moooooo"

We got to see both polar bears awake and active today.

A Bedtime Ruckus

Every night we go through the same routine for Elias at bed time. It has really helped him be happy at bedtime. (Although it doesn’t always help him fall asleep quickly…he’s in there counting something right now. “One, two, wee, two, wee, two, wee!”)

Anyway, the last thing I do before putting Elias in the crib for the night is sing to him. I usually sing about three songs… sometimes more…as I rock him in the rocking chair. This evening one of the songs I chose was “This Little Light of Mine.” It’s not really a lullaby, but I thought it would still be ok.

I guess I got a little too into the song though…because during the “shine it all over the neighborhood” verse, Elias started clapping. Not like a “well done, Mommy” clap. It was a clap to the off beats, feelin’ the music kind of clap. I burst out laughing and kissed him a bunch of times. Then I finished the song.

After that, I sang two of the quietest, calmest songs I know, and put him in the crib. I guess you know your bedtime songs are making too much of a ruckus if your child starts clapping to the beat. I’ll have to keep that in mind for the future…..

First Tricycle Ride!

Speaking of mildly spoiling grandparents, Grandma Smith has done some of her own this past weekend. (Read the baseball post just before this one if you are confused). Nathan’s mom had asked us what we thought about her buying a tricycle for Elias’ 2nd birthday. We thought it was a fun idea. But I was surprised when we invited over for a Saturday evening dinner, and she showed up with a tricycle so soon! Elias got his birthday present over two months early so that he’ll be able to enjoy it during the summer months. It is a classic radio flyer tricycle with a bell and everything. (Elias promptly figured out how to ring it).

Last night we had to spend the last few minutes before bed time buying a helmet so he didn’t have much of a chance to try it out. Today after church, we took it outside and gave it a try. Here you can watch him on his first trike ride:

After awhile, Elias got off and pushed his tricycle around. He definitely moved faster that way. But I’m sure before long we’ll be chasing after him as he rides it. Then, Elias got back on his trike to ride home. He was quite resistant to the helmet at first, but here you can see him getting a bit more used to it:

Baseball Fun

Elias has loved baseball for awhile now. Probably because Nathan loves it too. Elias actually calls it “bat and ball.” So far he’s been to one MLB game, and lots of softball games in which Nathan plays on Sunday evenings. Every time Elias sees a stick he says “bat” and every time he sees something round he calls it a “ball.” It’s fun to see Nathan and Elias share something that they really love.

A few months ago, I found a plastic bat and ball set at Target in the dollar section. We brought it over to Baba and Grandma Bartle’s to play. Baba got out his old tee, but it was difficult for Elias to use. So, being the mildly spoiling grandparents that they are (hey…that’s what grandparents are for, right?)…they bought Elias a tee fit for 18 month-3 year olds. Elias loves that tee, and it came with its own slightly sturdier bat. At first, Elias kept holding the wrong end of the bat. He sort of poked at the ball rather than swinging at it. But now after some work with Daddy, and a lot of work with Baba (while I’ve been working at summer school) Elias has a pretty good swing down.

Here is Elias…the future ball player…a video for your enjoyment.
