A Day Off

Last Saturday both Nathan and I were working. It was my last day of summer school. I was writing student evaluations and celebrating all the hard work. Nathan actually worked about 65 hours last week including going in to work at 3:30 am on Saturday morning! He got some unofficial comp time, and decided to take the day off today. We had a blast just being together for some down time after last month which was so crazy. What did we do? We decided to check some items off of our summer bucket list.

After a lazy morning, we headed down town with a picnic lunch. We walked along the waterfront, and found a nice place to sit down and eat. We even got to see the Hawthorne bridge lift!

P1130707 P1130709Next, we walked to VooDoo Donut. Neither of us had ever been there so we thought we should check it out. We had to wait in a relatively long line for a donut place. But it was fun and worth the wait. Simon got in a nap while we were waiting. In this picture, you can see Elias planning out the rest of his afternoon. His thumb was for tricycle riding, and his pointer finger was for bat and ball.

P1130710After getting the donuts and driving home, we played together a bit inside. Simon was reaching for the donut box big time so I thought I would have Nathan take a picture of it. When he got the camera out, though, Simon became more interested in the camera.

P1130712Here I am having fun with the boys.

P1130719I got a few chores done while Nathan read to the boys. I came in to find Nathan nearly falling asleep as he was reading. It was quite comical. He kept saying the wrong words and slurring off into oblivion. For example he was reading a page about seahorses at one point, and said, “The seashore swims u…….” My laughter woke him up, though. It was funny to watch Simon struggling to get the book, Elias listening to the book, and Nathan nodding off.

P1130722Since Nathan was having trouble staying awake, I suggested we go outside for a bit. Elias rode his tricycle to the park, and we put Simon in the stroller. We had fun swinging and running around in the grass.

Finally, we came home and I cooked some Texas Casserole for dinner. Here is Simon playing while the casserole baked…he’s trying to show that he’s ready for real food. (He really is showing a lot of interest in food…one time he even managed to get some lettuce from my sandwich into his mouth…but we’re waiting until he is six months, or he can sit up on his own before we start him on solids….whichever is later.)

P1130724It was a wonderful day together! Now we only have a two day week, and then it’s the real weekend!

Hops Game In Pictures

We attended another Hillsboro Hops game this evening. Much fun was had. It was bittersweet because we originally planned this outing so that Uncle Greg and Shaina could come with us. We thought of you, Uncle Greg! (He had to cancel his trip to Oregon). We got to sit in the front row again, and got two game balls out of the deal! Here are our pics:

On The Move

Well, it’s official. Simon is on the move. He is five months old, and can’t sit up on his own yet, but he can move. He doesn’t always move in the direction he is intending to go. He doesn’t move fast. But he is definitely slow and steady. I set him down on a blanket with a bunch of baby safe toys, and in a matter of minutes he is completely across the room after a ball or a baseball card or a cat or whatever else has caught his fancy. This has meant a few changes to all of our lives:

Elias trying to decide what to do with his new playmate

Elias trying to decide what to do with his new playmate

1. Playing together. Now that Simon can move, he almost definitely wants to be where Elias is playing. No matter how far away I set him down, he makes his way over to Elias and gets in on the action. Elias is still unsure about how to react to this new development. Sometimes he just sits there looking a bit nervous. Sometimes he picks up and moves away. Sometimes he offers to play with Simon. Earlier today Elias was playing with his blocks, building a wall. Simon came over and knocked it down, then proceeded to put block after block in his mouth. Elias said, “One for me, one for Simon, one for me, one for Simon,” and made two separate piles for them to play with. I was so proud of him. Other times Elias mimics things I have said. Earlier this evening, Elias was playing with his baseball cards, and Simon scooted over to look. Simon took a big handful of them and immediately put them in his mouth. Elias said, “Those aren’t for your mouth, Simon.”

2. Nothing is safe. When Elias was this age (actually he wasn’t moving like this until 8 months or so….) we didn’t have toys that were unsafe for him. Some of Elias’ toys have chokable pieces so it is difficult to keep Simon safe. I have to have eagle eyes, and I am teaching Elias how to watch out for his little brother as well.

3. Everything is new and exciting. It’s so fun to watch Simon with his new found freedom. He is so inquisitive and excited about everything. It gets me interested in the world around me all over again.

Earlier this afternoon, Simon was napping on my bed. He had been asleep for quite a while, and I knew he was starting to stir so I figured it would be ok if I rummaged around in the closet for something I needed. Pretty soon, I was greeted with this sight:

P1130638Simon popped his little head up above the pillow I had used to ensure he wouldn’t roll off the bed. He woke up so happy! Then he proceeded to try to climb over the pillow to get to me….I guess I won’t be using that technique anymore. Here he is:

P1130648 P1130642He brings us so much joy. I know his mobility is extremely limited right now compared to what it will be. But this phase will be so short in the grand scheme of things. I’m just trying to enjoy every second.

Hops baseball count

We’ve been getting out to a lot of Hillsboro Hops baseball games this summer. I’ve been to five, and Elias has been to four, with mommy and Simon having been to three. It’s always a lot of fun.

We’ve been getting front-row seats for the games. When you have front-row seats, baseballs come your way, by two main paths. First of all is the traditional: the foul ball. One of the games I was about an inch from snagging a foul. And tonight I barely missed another. But in the same inning I got lucky and caught one (which was deflected by Uncle Scott). So far we have one baseball souvenir from foul balls.

The second way you get baseballs by sitting in the front row is by having a cute two-year-old with you. Elias is quite the ball magnet. In games where he has sat in the front row, we are three for three in having a player or coach hand him a ball.

So we have a total of four balls from Hops games. I think I’ll keep the total updated on the blog.

Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Kk)

I’ve been teaching summer school the last five weeks, and planning instruction for 82 fifth and sixth graders….so…..I fell off the wagon a bit with Elias’ letter of the week. Yesterday was my last day of work, though, and I am excited to get started again. Tomorrow we’ll start again with letter Ll.

Here is what we did for Kk over the last five weeks:

K is for Kite

We went to the Oregon coast for some beach fun. While we were there we stopped by a kite shop and let Elias pick out his own kite. I offered a few that I thought were pretty cool. He rejected all of those, and chose a cow kite. We headed to the beach, and when the wind picked up a bit, we tried flying the kite. My husband and I were probably great entertainment for some of the other beach goers. We could not figure out how to get that kite in the air. Poor Elias lost interest and went to play with his sand toys. Eventually, we figured out what was wrong, and the boys had some fun flying the kite together. I’m glad it was a success!

P1120895K is for Kitchen

I decided to let Elias help me bake cookies the night before I started teaching. He loves helping me bake cookies. (He calls it “decorations” because he gets to add the sprinkles). Unfortunately, it was poor timing because Nathan had to leave to take his Mom to the E.R. and I found out after we had already added most of the ingredients that we had no baking soda. Elias just kept saying, “It’s time for decorations!” I couldn’t bear to break his little heart so I called my parents for help. They saved the day by bringing us some baking soda, and even stayed to help put the boys to bed! The cookies were tasty.

P1120931K is for Kiss

I told Elias I was going to give him 100 kisses in one day. We counted them together.

K is for Key

I borrowed a small lock and key from my dad, and let Elias try to open it. I thought about getting a few different ones so that he had to match the key to the right lock, but I never got around to it.

K is for Kaleidoscope

I found an old fashioned kaleidoscope online for pretty cheap and I purchased it for Elias. When we first took it out of the box, he was very excited, but didn’t really know what to do with it. I tried to show him where to look, but he was just interested in looking at the opposite end where all of the beads are. Finally, I took a picture by putting the camera lens right up to the peep hole, then showed him the picture of what was inside. That finally got him to look in the right place. However, he made up his own game with the kaleidoscope where he pretended to eat different colored beads. I guess we’ll have to try it again when he’s a bit older.

Our Bible lesson for Kk was King Solomon.

Matching Outfits

If I had two girls, they’d be in matching dresses all the time. Alas, I cannot put my boys in matching dresses. However, now that Simon is wearing 12 month size, I can still match their outfits. I went to Target and bought a cute summer church outfit (a polo and khaki shorts) for the boys to wear. A couple Sundays ago, we had them wear it to church. They were so cute.

Girls (and Simon) Weekend in Vegas!

One of my best friends from childhood got married last weekend. When I first found out that she was getting married in Las Vegas during my summer school job, I thought there was no way I could go. But then, my Mom presented the idea of a girls weekend in Vegas…with Simon, of course. I talked with Nathan, and he decided it would be fun to have a weekend at home with just Elias. So to Vegas I went.

The trip was super fun. It was very special to have a weekend with my mom. And I was so happy to be at my friend’s wedding. But Vegas is not a family friendly place! Smoke everywhere! There were a few times where I had to tell Simon to avert his eyes…and be thankful that he wouldn’t remember it.

Mostly we just swam and relaxed, but we did have a few adventures…including a small flash flood! On Friday night, we went across the strip to M&M’s world. While we were inside, a thunderstorm started. We got emergency notices by text on our phone for flash flood danger. When we tried to cross the street back to the Monte Carlo where we were staying, we had to wade through almost knee deep water to get there. And I was carrying the stroller with Simon in it while doing so!

Here are some pictures of our fun weekend:

Tired Boy

My teaching position has been especially hard on Elias. Many mornings he gets woken up way before he would naturally wake. He has even napped on a few of the days! Yesterday morning I went to wake him, and he had a very hard time with it. Hermione even went in there to “kiss” him good morning, and he didn’t even stir:

P1130224I picked him up from my parents’ house after work, and he fell asleep on the drive home. I carried him in and put him on the couch. After he slept for 20 or so minutes, Nathan decided to take the opportunity to join him. Poor tired boys.

Like Daddy Like Son

Last weekend when we were in Sunriver, Simon had a bit of trouble sleeping. He ended up in our bed. In the morning I woke up to a wonderful sight:
