Yellow Dust

Our welcome mat and some footprints in the dust that is settling.

We had a fine layer of yellow dust covering the hallway outside our front door this morning. Just as Nathan was getting ready to leave for work, we heard lots of running around outside. When he opened the front door, he was greeted with a cloud of dust so thick, he thought the building was on fire. After a few minutes, the dust started to settle, and Nathan took a few pictures.

It turns out the young men who live across from us decided it would be a good idea to play with the fire extinguisher. We’ve had a few problems with them before

Here you can still see some dust in the air in the hallway.

now…including one incident where they continually banged on our front door when I was home alone with Elias, and threatened to steal our Christmas wreath…but that story is for another time.

Anyway, the firemen showed up along with the police. One of the boys got arrested for disorderly conduct. Not much harm done except for the huge mess! And please pray that nothing will catch on fire…because I will have to run all the way up to the third floor or down to the first for a fire extinguisher until ours is replaced. No candles for us until it is!

Springtime Walk

walkNone of us had gotten much time outside on this beautiful day for one reason or another. As sunset approached, that was a tragedy I just could not live with! I sent Elias and Nathan out for some fresh air in the beautiful weather while I nursed Simon. Then, I headed out to find them a few minutes later.

It was fun taking a walk out with Simon. The wetlands behind our place is so alive right now. Trees are budding. Birds are singing. I could feel them calling us outside. Simon was wide eyed and looking all around. I could just see the wonder and interest. I could imagine his little brain starting to process all the new sights. It was quite fun.

We weren’t able to catch up with Elias and Daddy until the very end of the walk, but we took a fun family photo outside, and I snapped a picture of all my boys walking together. Here’s to many more similar evenings!

Tummy Time and a Tower

Simon watched Elias and Mommy build this tower.

Simon watched Elias and Mommy build this tower.

This afternoon during play time Elias and I built a house out of duplos. Then Elias decided that we needed to use all of the blocks to build a tower. We worked on it together. Then, after it was finished, he wanted to take a picture of it. I helped him take this picture of the house/tower. He was very proud of it, but then wanted to knock it over. I convinced him to wait until Daddy saw it first. Elias did wait to show it to Daddy, but not even five seconds after Daddy saw it, Elias had knocked it down. I guess that’s the most fun part, right?

After Daddy got home and settled in, I decided Simon needed some tummy time. Similar to (pretty much) all babies, he is not a big fan of tummy time. Today I decided to prop him up a bit on the boppy pillow to see if he enjoyed it any more than being flat. Elias always liked being propped up on the boppy, but we didn’t start that until he was three or four months old so I didn’t know how Simon would take to it at 6 weeks. He did like it better than being flat on his tummy, but he only lasted for a few minutes. Here are some cute pictures of his tummy time:

Brother Love

readingToday I witnessed some cute examples of brother love. It was encouraging since Elias’ first reactions to Simon were mostly negative. Although Elias doesn’t want to touch Simon, and doesn’t often want to be near him, he looks out for his little brother. He tells me things like “Mommy, Simon wants his pacifier.” or “Mommy, Simon is happy.” or “Mommy feed Simon.” or “Simon, look at this rattle!” or “I will choose his diaper.” or “Don’t cry Simon. It’ll be ok.”

And we have gotten to a point where Elias doesn’t often choose to be near Simon, but he tolerates it. He cuddles up to me to read a story even if I am holding Simon. (One of my favorite things…cuddling and reading with both boys at the same time!) He even occasionally kisses Simon on the head.

popcornThe first thing I witnessed this morning was during breakfast. I had put Simon down to rest on the floor where he could see us while we ate, but he fell asleep. Elias and I ate breakfast together, and Simon slept near us. After breakfast when I let Elias down from the table, I left Simon where he was so that I could do the dishes while he still slept. Elias ran to get Simon’s stuffed animal (Elias named it “popcorn”). “Mommy, he wants popcorn next to him. Here Simon.” Even though Simon did not know popcorn was there, I thought it was so cute and thoughtful that I took a picture of popcorn where Elias had left him.

familyLater in the day, when I was feeding Simon, I overheard Elias reading to himself. He was reading a book about being a big brother that my friend Jenny bought for him. The text of the page he was on says something like, “Daddy loves me. Mommy loves me. I am special because I am me.” What Elias said was, “Daddy loves me. Mommy loves me. Simon loves me.” That made me smile inside and out.

In other news, I got both boys out of the house and all the way over to the other side of town on short notice and we were on time in order to sign for the closing of our refinance. I think that is worth bragging about…even if it has nothing to do with the rest of this post.

Sometimes You Just Need An Uncle To Have Sword Fights With……

sword fightLast night we went for a big dinner gathering at Auntie Kristy’s and Uncle Scott’s house. Almost as soon as we walked in, Uncle Scott pulled out some “noodles” and had a good ol’ fashioned sword fight with Elias. Baba, and even Peggy (Auntie Kristy’s mom) joined in the fun for a time.

At home, when Elias swings stuff around it is usually aimed at “playing” with the cats. So…we don’t let him do it much. But he had a blast sword fighting and no one got hurt!

Sometimes you just need an Uncle to play with and have some good ol’ “boy” fun.

Friends Forever!

Simon has been meeting lots of other babies in the last few days. On Thursday, he made his first appearance at baby play group and met three other babies. In his play group, Simon is the youngest and the only boy so he’ll be trained well in how to have tea parties and other such girly things even though he has no sisters!

Simon and Ethan's first meeting. Simon looks so much bigger than Ethan, but they are only two weeks and five days apart!

Last night, Simon got to meet his first boy buddy! Ethan was born just 2 weeks and five days after Simon so they are very close in age! They will grow up together! Last night the two did not interact much. They ate, slept, and cried at different times. But I’m sure they’ll be playing in a few short months. The boys are not related, but share an aunt (Auntie Kristy).

The dinner gathering was very fun, and I wanted to mark the time when the boys first met since they’ll hopefully know each other for a long long time!

Smile!

Simon and I had quite a bit of time this morning before Elias woke up. Actually…Elias is still asleep at 8:00! He has exhausted himself this week trying to adjust to Daddy being gone. Simon and I were playing together in the early morning, and he was smiling a lot. What fun!

Simon – 5 Weeks

Simon is 5 weeks old today. He brings us much joy. I took a mini photo shoot today in honor of his being 5 weeks old. Here are some of the many faces of Simon:

Here is his..."come on Mom, cut it out?" face

Simon mostly smiles in his sleep these days. He has a rare awake smile. This was the end of one of his awake smiles. Of course…his eyes are closed…but trust me…he was awake. (I always had the hardest time capturing pictures of Elias’ smiles at this age. Looks like I will have the same luck the second time around)

I turned around and snapped this picture of Elias watching the mini photo shoot.

A Surprise Package!

Let’s just say it has been a rough couple of days. With Nathan back to work, I am at home with Elias and Simon. I know tons of people have two or more kids and they do fine…some day we will adjust and be fine too. But that doesn’t make the transition time any easier. Elias has regressed a bit and has been crying when Simon cries. And he misses his Daddy. All day he says, “It’s dinner time.” because I’ve been telling him that Daddy will be home at dinner time.

Let’s face it, one or both boys has been crying for a large portion of the 11 or so hours I’m home with them. But today was only day two. And both days everyone ate breakfast. Everyone ate lunch. Everyone got at least some sort of nap. Everyone stayed safe. Everyone was even happy at some point. Hey…that’s pretty good.

Elias had a particularly rough time at play group today. I think it was just too busy. Too noisy. After everyone left, Elias ran in my bedroom and sat in the middle of the bed. Simon was fussing and Elias was crying. I felt a bit crazed to be honest. But a surprise package had come to our door from Uncle Greg and Shaina!

I try not to be a Mom who “medicates” by buying things for Elias. But sometimes a good old fashioned present just does the trick. This package could not have been more perfectly timed. Elias refused to get off the bed so I just started opening the box on the floor where he could see me and wondering out loud what was in it. He became more and more interested. When I pulled out a bright red and white package just for him, that did it. He exclaimed, “I want to open it!” and ran over to be next to me and Simon.

You can see in the pictures…especially the first one….how Elias started out upset, but then gradually forgot his woes. He loved his gifts from Uncle Greg and Shaina! Then, we opened the one for Simon. It was a cute outfit! Pictures of that are sure to come after it is washed and worn.

So…a big THANK YOU to Greg and Shaina. After playing with his toys for a bit, Elias happily ate lunch, had a very successful quiet time, snuggled with me, went down for a nap, and woke up happy. This package helped me keep my sanity today! Pics:

He played with the train next, but went back to the coins saying “I’m going to save them for later.”

Elias played with his whale and book the longest. He made the whale swim around the whole house while I cooked dinner in the evening.

Oh Parenting….

Parenting makes you weird….at least I think it has made us weird in many ways. Here are a few excerpts from my day to prove it:

……….

This afternoon as I sat and ate my lunch I wondered to myself: “Why do I smell spit up everywhere I go? It’s stuck in my nose!”

(a few seconds later)

“Oh…there is spit up on my shirt. Oh well.” (I’m still wearing said shirt)

………..

Me: “Elias, hold still! I’m trying to help you get a booger out!”

………..

Me: “Elias, what do you want for lunch.”

Elias: “Uhhhhh…….goldfish and apples and………buffalo!”

Me: “Buffalo? Well, we don’t have any so what else do you want?”

Elias: “I want goldfish and apples and buffalo.”

Me: “Well we dont’ have buffalo so if you don’t tell me what you want I’ll choose something for you.”

Elias: “I’ll have…….. a grilled cheese.”

…………..

Elias: “Daddy get it out!”

Daddy: “It’s just toe lint. It won’t hurt anything…………….ok I’m getting it.”

…………..

Then there’s wearing stuffed animals on your head to entertain your infant:

…………….

But parenting isn’t all weird. Sometimes it’s wonderful too. Here are some other excerpts from today:

“I love you Mommy.”

” Mommy thank you so much!”

“I want to watch Charlie Brown and snuggle with Mommy”

……………

Oh Parenting……no matter what, I love my boys!
