Almost 2 – A Magical Time

Elias’ is almost two, and his language development just seems to be exploding. I know this is normal, but it’s magical to experience it…or to witness my son experience it.

Today alone Elias learned 2 new letters and four new words. He identified the letters “x” and “o” in books, on blocks, on stamps, and on a box at many different times throughout the day. He said “rainbow” and “black” and “Ernie” for the first time, as well as saying “neigh” when pointing to a horse.

It is quite fun to watch him grow and learn. The human brain is an amazing thing.

Smith Family Fall Bucket List 2012!

It has been a year now since I created our first seasonal family bucket list. I love making the bucket lists each season because it really helps us focus our family time. As Elias gets older, we’ll have him give his input on what he wants to go on the bucket list. For now, I’ve gotten some ideas online, come up with some on my own, and used some tried and true fall activities. We make sure we have some time for relaxing too.

Since it has been a year since our first bucket list, I wanted to change things up a bit. Last year, each season, I made a checklist of sorts, printed it out, put it in a frame, and displayed in our home. We checked off completed activities with a dry erase marker. That was a lot of fun, and I probably could have done that forever. But I didn’t want to get stuck in a rut. Part of the fun of the bucket list is that it gets us to try new things…right? So I thought for a long while about how to present our fall 2012 bucket list. I decided to make a leaf garland. The leaf garland is displayed in a central place in our home. Each time we complete an activity, we’ll remove the corresponding leaf from the garland and post it on the window.

Here’s how we did it:

First, I searched online for images of leaf templates. I chose a maple, oak, aspen, poplar, and one other to get some variety. Then, I traced the templates onto a sheet of thick poster board.

Next, I cut out the leaves, and instituted family art night! I got out the paints, the brushes, the plastic to cover our carpet, and gathered my family. Here is our set up:

Then we painted away. My son, being 23 months immensely enjoyed the activity. I wondered if we’d have to paint the leaves in shifts (there were 30 of them), but he wanted to paint them all. The best part was that the more the paint smeared and mixed, the better they looked, so Elias created some very beautiful looking leaves. My husband and I joined in the fun and made a few as well.

Then we set the leaves out to dry. They curled a bit at first, but mostly flattened themselves out as they dried.

The next day, I cut out each item on our bucket list, and glued it to the back of a leaf. I used a hole punch to create a way to hang my leaves.

Finally, I used twine to hang my leaves as a garland, and put it up on our wall! I used the extra leaves to decorate the remaining wall space, and made a “title” for our bucket list. Overall I’m very happy with it. It is not as elegant as I had envisioned, but it was made partially by a one year old. It is a family bucket list and that’s more important to me than elegance. Here is a close up of our bucket list garland:

Curious what is on our bucket list? Here is what is on the back of all those leaves:

  • Collect leaves, preserve them, and send some to our sponsored children
  • Fill a cornucopia with things we are thankful for and display it in our home
  • Go apple picking!
  • Visit a pumpkin patch
  • Make carmel apples. If possible, use homemade caramel
  • Go on a walk at the nature park
  • Celebrate the 11th anniversary of our first date
  • Make pine cone turkeys
  • Have an autumn themed read-a-thon at a local park
  • Find out the story behind the first pardoning of a white house turkey
  • Make leaf coasters
  • Go on a hayride
  • Make fall cookies
  • Carve pumpkins
  • Dance to the monster mash
  • Watch “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” together as a family
  • Watch “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” together as a family
  • Go Trick-or-Treating
  • Watch a football game while eating homemade chili
  • Make leaf magnets

It’s looking to be a great fall for us! Anyone have a good homemade chili recipe?

MMMMM….Pineapple

We enjoyed a barbeque earlier this evening. Nathan got out the grill and we had some good ol’ fashioned cheeseburgers complete with corn on the cob and pineapple. While Elias was too good for the burgers or corn, he sure did enjoy that pineapple. Ahhh…the good old days of summer.

On a totally unrelated note, this boy needs a haircut…bad!

Oregon State Fair (In Pictures)

We celebrated our extra day together as a family by heading to Salem for the last day of the Oregon State Fair. Nana came with us. Elias had a lot of fun looking at the animals. Here is our morning in pictures:

We looked at the cows first. Elias was sort of interested in them, but didn’t want to get too close (a good thing). As we walked by he said, “bye bye moos”.

Look at those horns! And the baby! I got to feed the brown cow in the background. I think I fed him apples. What fun!

The pigs were next. Elias saw these two and said, “Two pigs”.

Goats! Elias got a little nervous when this one tried to nibble on his pants…then actually did nibble on my sweater. Elias liked watching the goats a lot. They were noisy and a lot of them were eating, so Elias kept pointing them out and saying “eat!”

Awwww….cute. More goats.

Here is my not so stellar picture of an alpaca. What a cool animal.

Looking at the llamas with Nana. We got very close to one and even got to touch its fur. Elias declined to join us.

This picture is for Greg. Evergreen Aviation had a booth at the fair. I don’t think Elias really understood why I parked him in front of the helicopter for a picture. It is not even the exact model that Uncle Greg flies. But it’s close….right?

The one disappointment was that there was only one ride that Elias was tall enough to ride…the carousel. Even that was a bit much for him. The carousel moved very fast. You can see Elias holding on to Nathan’s shirt for dear life in the picture. We were glad he got to ride something…it was on our bucket list after all.

We were very glad we went. It was just a beautiful day to get out and about and try something new.

Old Friends, Good Times

Bryan and Amanda during their ceremony.

Our friend from high school, Bryan Quinn got married today. Nathan was in the wedding party. We got to see a few friends who live in town and one who we hadn’t seen for a long time!

I love weddings, and I always cry at them. It was fun to have Elias on my lap watching along, witnessing the beginning of a new life together. Congratulations Bryan and Amanda!

Here are some pictures from our day:

Elias picked the M&M’s off this cupcake and enjoyed them immensely. It was perfect for him!

A family shot!

Elias played briefly with our friend, Andy, from high school.

A Pregnancy Update

Here is my baby bump. Sorry about the weird picture. I don’t know why Nathan cut off my head…and Elias decided that this would be a good time to wear my tennis shoes and try to squeeze between me and the wall while walking in them….

Here is a picture for Steve and Greg and all the other out of town family and friends. I am now 17 and a half weeks along and I’m feeling great. I’ve gotten a lot bigger a lot faster this time around, but I’m still small enough that I don’t notice the pregnancy much. The second trimester really is the best one.

I had major fatigue issues during the first trimester. It is normal to feel fatigued during the first trimester, but what I had was way beyond that…at least way beyond what I felt my first pregnancy. I don’t think I really even realized how bad it was until I looked back on it. It wasn’t just being sleepy-tired. Sometimes I just physically couldn’t even stand up. Even cooking dinner sometimes felt like just too much. I’d collapse on the floor until the dinner was boiling over or burning or Elias forced me up. After a visit to the doctor, they determined it was a severe Vitamin D deficiency. Now after supplements and moving on to the second trimester, things are much better.

I actually feel guilty a bit sometimes. I know I don’t have to feel guilty… I’ve heard from the doctor and countless friends that it’s normal to feel as I do. But I still do feel guilty because I just don’t think about this pregnancy very much. I’m excited for the baby…but it’s just not real yet….and I’m busy with Elias. I’m sure it will get more “real” once I can feel the baby moving and once I know the gender.

Concert in the Park: Year 2

Our view during the concert. This was when we first got there…before it really got crowded.

Last year a friend told us about the Oregon Symphony’s annual free concert at Waterfront Park. We packed a picnic dinner, went to the concert, and asked ourselves why we had never done that before. It was so much fun. In fact, it sparked a whole bunch of fun activities for our family. Going to that concert made me wonder why we didn’t get out more and enjoy activities of each season…it inspired the seasonal bucket lists.

We were excited to go again this year, but I admit I may have forgotten about it if our good friend (and Elias’ godfather) Andrew hadn’t asked us to meet him there. (We randomly saw him there last year)

My happy boys during the first concert (Portland Youth Philharmonic)

A picnic was packed again along with a big blanket, warm clothes, and the camera. The weather could not have been more beautiful. Elias loved the concert. He clapped to the music, and even danced to the music in the beginning.

The finale (1812 overture) came complete with real cannon fire and a concluding fireworks show. We kept Elias out way too late to be considered responsible parents, but I think a little culture and a little fun is worth a late bedtime sometimes.

Fireworks! Elias kept saying “Wow” and “Woah baby!”

In Which I Am Tired Of This Pregnancy Brain Business

I try not to complain about pregnancy. Because no matter the discomfort now, I know that the end result is way more than worth it. And who wants to be around a complainer anyway? Plus I am so blessed with this miracle, and many others would love to be in my big, lumbering, emotional position.

But I just have to say…I am tired of this pregnancy brain business. I don’t really know if pregnancy brain is a real “thing” or not. But it sure seems like it. I had the last straw today when I discovered that somehow I had misplaced both sets of instructions from the vet for my cats. I took Olive in on Monday, and Hermione in today (Wednesday). Both days I put the instructions from the vet safely in my purse at the vet’s office before I left the counter. Both days I went directly to the car, buckled Elias and the cat in, and went directly home. Both days later in the evening I was trying to tell Nathan how it went only to find that the instructions were nowhere to be found.

What is happening to me? All I can say is:

Dear Brain,

Please come back soon.

Respectfully,

Me

Update: Guess what came to me in the mail? Apparently Olive’s vet papers never left the vet office. I still heartily insist that I did put them in my purse. I guess they fell out of my purse as I gathered everything to go out to the car. Mystery number 1 solved. Now for Hermione’s…..

Smore’s, Fishing, Dandelions, Softball, and More!

We filled another weekend to the brim, and had tons of family fun. Elias had a lot of firsts, and was generally adored by all six adults in attendance. The only downside was missing the St. Bart’s day celebration at our church. I guess there’s always next year.

Friday we said good bye to Auntie Erin and cousins Audrey and Sonya, then packed up, and headed off to the coast for some camping. (Granted, we did stay in a cabin so Nathan claims it does not count as camping…I think it’s just camping with style) We crammed into a cabin with my parents, brother, and sister-in-law so there were seven of us in that small space designed for a maximum of five.

Elias trying out Baba’s water bottle while sitting around the campfire.

Shortly after we arrived, we got to sit around the campfire. Elias enjoyed exploring his new “home.” He learned how to zip and unzip the entrance to the dining tent and promptly went in and out and in and out saying “peek-a-boo.” He also practiced his two newest words: auntie and uncle. In the car on the way to the coast, he started saying those two, and we were excited for him to show them off when we arrived.

We also ate smore’s which is one of my favorite things to do. Elias somehow got a hold of a marshmallow skewer and almost did some damage to my face with it…Luckily he ended up just poking my forehead. Auntie Kristy snapped this picture just before the incident.

Here is our boy getting ready for bed.

After the campfire, we went inside to go to sleep. We had never gone to sleep at the same time and in the same room as Elias, so we wondered if he would be able to fall asleep knowing that we were only a few feet away. (In hotel rooms, we’ve had a habit of putting him to bed, then reading in the bathroom until he falls asleep…weird I know…we probably won’t do that any more now that we know it doesn’t matter if we are in the room!). Elias sailed through his first night. He fell asleep relatively easily…Daddy only needed to tell him to be quiet twice. It was actually hard not to laugh when he was shouting “Auntie, Uncle, Ama, Baba” at the top of his lungs.

Most everyone woke up extremely early to go fishing the next morning. Elias, Ama, and I were left to sleep in. (Well…if you count 7 am as sleeping in, which I do these days). We had a leisurely morning, and then went to play at a park at the campground. We also went to the Seaside Outlets to get Elias a few more fall and winter clothes at Osh Kosh with my free Osh Kosh cash.

Elias running in the sand.

After everyone else got back from fishing (They had eleven fish on, and actually were able to keep three salmon!) Nathan and I took Elias to the beach to play. He loved playing in the sand, and as soon as

Elias and Nathan walking into the ocean.

Nathan said, “Do you want to go in the ocean?” he went straight there to dip his feet in. As you can see from the first picture, we did roll his pants up, but it didn’t do much good. Elias wasn’t bothered by the chilly water at all, and waded about thigh deep!

Elias was very happy to be in the ocean. He kept giggling when the waves came in.

Saturday evening we decided to go for a boat ride. It was Elias’ first boat ride on the Columbia. I won’t let him go fishing at this young of an age because there are sharp hooks and heavy metal weights and rough waters and fish blood everywhere. But a nice calm evening boat ride sounded fun. Elias kept saying “boat!” and seemed to have tons of fun. Notice the boots he is wearing in the pictures. I bought those for him earlier in the day and he absolutely loves them! Here are a few pictures of our ride:

Elias with Auntie and Uncle on the boat.

One of the views of the docks.

With Mommy and Daddy on the boat.

Then, Baba let Elias sit on his lap and drive the boat! We ended up going in a circle with Elias as the driver, but he had the time of his life!

Elias the boat captain.

On Sunday, everyone went fishing early again, so Ama, Elias, and I went on a long walk through the forest. We saw a large crane, and Elias stopped to pick some dandelions for Ama and Mommy.

After lunch, we packed up, and headed home in time for Nathan’s softball playoffs and championships. Elias loves watching the softball games. He claps when they get hits and everything. The first game went really well for the team, and they made it to the championship game! Go St. Juan Diego Screaming Eagles! Unfortunately the second game did not go as well, but second place is not bad! Here is Elias running and playing on the field between the games:

Needless to say we were all pretty exhausted by the end of the day. This is when we are making memories. I think they’re good ones.

The Man’s Bathroom

We had to clear off our patio for an inspection and cleaning. I could not resist snapping a picture of the temporary location for the grill:

Tim the Toolman would be proud.
