Nature Walk

I have to say we’ve done pretty well on our Smith Family Fall Bucket List for 2011. One of the things that we had left coming into the weekend was going on a nature walk. It was very cold, but looking out the window we saw a break in the rain this morning, and decided to just go for it. We bundled up and set off for the Tualatin Hills Nature Park down the road to go for a walk. We enjoyed looking at the habitat mosaic as they call it. Many kinds of trees….leaves bigger than your head….everything there is just huge and tall and spectacular. Unfortunately we are a little too close to winter to have seen or heard much wildlife, but Elias did get to say “hi” to a squirrel. It was nice to get outside and enjoy God’s creation. Below are some pictures from our walk:

Daddy and Elias on one of the boardwalks.

The squirrel that Elias "talked" with.

Looking up. Everything is so tall!

Our special boy all bundled up.

I guess you can't really tell from the picture because there is nothing to compare it to.....but this leaf was huge.

Eating Independence

Elias after finishing his yogurt the other night. He fed himself using the spoon!

Elias has twice now been interested in trying to feed himself his yogurt. A few nights ago he tried for the first time, and again today for lunch. Yogurt is one of his favorite foods right now, and he usually eats it quickly and eagerly. However, these two times he really wanted to feed it to himself. Needless to say it got quite messy. He experimented quite a bit with the spoon, and got a lot in his mouth using the spoon. He ate from both ends of the spoon, and when he spilled some on his pants he even tried to pick it up with the spoon. It was very cute. In the end, he had about half of the cup left and just dumped it on the table, stuck his hand in, and licked. The spoon skills will come later with more practice.

Catch-up

This has been a bit of a difficult week for us, so I think I’ll just do a quick catch-up blog post.

Daddy tries to get Elias to blow bubbles on the last day of swim class.

1. Swimming! Last Friday was the last of our baby and me swimming classes. It was the third time we had signed Elias up. We love taking him swimming. Nathan and I have to trade off who gets to go with him, but it took up three nights a week and made us extremely busy. We had a three week period where we had something every single evening. Needless to say, we were a little relieved to have three nights a week back to enjoy at home or to do other things. Elias loves the water for the most part, but towards the end of the class he started resisting back floats a little. We think he is starting to understand gravity. We’ll probably sign him up again in January or February, but for now we are glad for the break.

Elias threw the ball and had to paddle to get it.

Elias showing off his noise makers. Notice how empty it is! We were the only ones in the entire room for awhile.

2. Children’s Museum! Even though Portland has a great Children’s museum, I am embarrassed to admit that we had never taken Elias there until last Saturday. We got there relatively early to beat the crowds, and it was worth it! Elias loved the baby garden room. He walked all over and particularly enjoyed the mini slide, the water bed, and the noise makers. He even figured out how to finish a turtle puzzle all on his own. We tried out a couple of the other rooms including the water works and the lego exhibit. Elias is a bit young for those, but he’ll grow into them soon! It was a very fun morning.

3. Illness! Unfortunately, Elias has been feeling under the weather this week. He seems to have a cold. He’s got a bit of a runny/stuffy nose, but was acting otherwise normal during the day. At night we have his mattress elevated and we have a humidifier going, but the snot just builds up. He has thrown up three nights in a row now (Last night he threw up twice) due to mucus build up. The poor little guy just can’t breathe. It is a big ordeal because we have to bathe him and change him. It has also caused me to get quite behind on laundry because I have to wash his sheets and mattress pad every day. The first two nights he seemed to be up for the adventure, but last night he had a very rough time. We are praying he gets healthy soon.

There is lots more I could write about, but I think I’ll stick with those three for now. There is a lot to do while Elias naps so I’ve got to get to it.

Artwork on the Fridge

Elias' dinosaur tracks artwork.

I signed Elias up for an art class through the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District. I figured it would be fun for him and for me, and we’d get to see and interact with other babies/toddlers. (And it is pretty cheap!) It’s not like I’m trying to be one of those moms who signs their babies up for “classes” thinking it will make them smarter or anything. I just want to have fun and expose the little guy to some new things.

Anyway, today was the first class, and it was really fun! I think it would be better for kids slightly older than Elias, but there was plenty he could do. The teacher said that she is not an instructor, but instead she is a facilitator. She had four different tables for the kids to explore. Elias got to play with play-doh for the first time as well as play at the sensory table. He also watercolor painted a wooden sailboat, and managed to get green watercolor all over my chin.

Then we moved to the dinosaur table. The “activity” was to make dinosaur footprints using toy dinosaurs and paint. I showed Elias how to “stomp” the dinosaurs using a scratch paper, but everything in the picture you see was done by Elias. He decided he wanted to finger paint a little bit too.

Now I get to be one of those moms with artwork on the refrigerator. And Nathan gets to take some to work. I’m sure soon we’ll have more artwork than we know what to do with…but I’m treasuring this first batch. My little boy is growing up.

Fall Leaves

This morning it was very cold! I debated whether or not to take Elias to the zoo, but decided that we’d just have a relaxing morning exploring our surroundings at home. We got all bundled up, and went exploring around our neighborhood. The air was so crisp and clear. You’d never know that we live right next to a busy road. Elias had a lot of fun playing and walking around. Then we went to the park and he enjoyed some swinging, walking up and down some steps on the play structure, and having a conversation with some seagulls which were across the field. A very fun filled morning. Here are some cute fall pictures:

Elias actually did really well walking around on the uneven ground. He also enjoyed showing me leaves.

What a cutie!

Happy Halloween!

Daddy and Elias after opening their books! Elias liked the tissue paper more than what was inside.

Well this is a couple days late coming, but we’ve been busy living life here in the Smith household! We did have a lot of fun on Halloween so I thought I’d share some of the pictures. Last year we started celebrating “All Hallows Read,” so as soon as Nathan got home from work, I showered my favorite boys with some scary books. Elias got a monster board book lined with scary monster fur, along with a couple others including the Charlie Brown pumpkin one you can see in the photo. Any excuse to give books is a good one! I found these ones at a book warehouse for only a dollar or so each so it was even a better deal! It was pretty cute because our cat, Olive (who likes to be in the middle of everything) got into Elias’ gift bag and they were pretty much fighting over the tissue and the bag. No one cared about the books except Mommy and Daddy….but Elias has enjoyed them since then…after the tissue was put away.

Elias practicing handing out candy.

We went over to Grandpa and Grandma Bartle’s house for dinner and the rest of the evening. Elias tried lasagna for the first time. He generally likes things with tomato sauce on/in them so he did pretty well with it. Then it was time to help hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.

After awhile we got him all dressed up in his costume, and visited three houses to go “trick-or-treating.” Basically I just wanted to show him off to a couple of family friends.

Elias getting all dressed up for Halloween

He was all animated saying “hi” until they opened the door. Then he decided that being mute and straight faced was better. Oh well. He was still cute.

Overall it was a very fun filled evening.

Carving Pumpkins

Carving pumpkins was another item on our fall bucket list. Nathan and I had not done that yet in the five years we had been married, and decided that we wanted to do it this year. We got some pumpkins at the pumpkin patch last weekend, but had a difficult time finding time to carve them. This afternoon we found a chance and snatched it since it is almost Halloween! It turned out to be quite fun, but I did get a bit frustrated because I wasn’t strong enough to do what I wanted with the tools we had. Nathan helped me with my pumpkin as well as doing his. I got to scoop out all the innards and do all the fine detail work on mine so I think I’ll still say I carved a pumpkin. Here is our pumpkin carving in pictures:

Elias is finishing up his snack while we ready the pumpkin carving area.

Nathan cutting off the top of his pumpkin.

We let Elias explore some of the pumpkin innards. He loved feeling it and squishing it, and required an outfit change afterward.

Elias was a little unsure about the bowl of pumpkin after he tried eating a little of it. Yuck!

Nathan works on his pumpkin's design.

By the time Mommy worked on her pumpkin, Elias was about done with being in the high chair. He got down to play.

After carving pumpkins, we had dinner this evening with Uncle Greg, Auntie Kristy, and Uncle Scott. Elias had lots of fun and got lots of attention.

Honoring Papa

Ever since I wrote my “honoring grandma” and “honoring grandpa” posts, I have wanted to write an “honoring papa” post, and also one to honor my grandma on that side of the family. Papa was my Dad’s father. He passed away as well, but I did not know the date. Instead of asking my Dad, I just procrastinated, and put it in the “to write later” file in my head.

But now is the time:

Papa always lived far from us, and came to visit only once when I was too young to remember so I did not know him at all for the first half or so of my life thus far. My parents took us to visit him three or four times where he lived in Florida when I was a teenager, so I was lucky to be able to meet him. He was a good man. It seemed to me that he was a little rough around the edges, but had a deep heart and soul. Looking into his eyes was sort of like looking at the stars on a clear night. There is so much out there and it seems to extend forever. I was not able to be there when he died, but I am glad that I knew him. Here are some things I remember about Papa:

– Papa loved Coke

– He was a very talented gardener. The first time we went to visit him in Florida, I loved following him around the garden in his backyard. There were the most beautiful flowers and lush green vegetation. He spent a long time tending to each one. I still look at pictures I took of him from behind with his watering hose in hand. He wanted us to come to a flower show with him. I do not remember if we went or not. But I hope we did. It would have been a good opportunity for him to share one of his passions with us.

– Papa introduced our family to Mentos. None of us had ever eaten them before, but we all do now.

– I remember the way he spoke. He had a deeper voice and a slight “accent.” Sometimes it was difficult to understand him because he blurred some words together.

– I remember his weathered skin. It looked and felt like he had worked hard his whole life.

– The first time we visited him, he met us at Disney World for a day before we drove down to Fort Myers where he lived. We went to Epcot, and I got to ride in that big ball with him. The entire time he talked to me and shared his knowledge. I loved it.

– I remember Papa’s chuckle. It was a little higher pitched, and it made him sound like a child again.

– Papa had very white hair. His beard was also very white.

– He had a twinkle in his eye, and this sly grin on his face sometimes that made you think he was always “up to something” or telling himself a funny joke.

– Although we did not hear from Papa very often, he was very loving and affectionate when we were with him. We got lots of hugs and kisses.

– I remember seeing Papa for the first time. I hadn’t even seen any recent pictures of him so I didn’t know what to expect. My family was to meet him inside Epcot. I remember my Dad all of a sudden walking faster and with more purpose. I looked around trying to see where he was going, and realizing right away who it was. He was tall and a little lanky. A true Bartle man.

– Papa was very good to his neighbor lady in Florida. I remember watching them interact when we were there visiting. They exchanged produce and grand kid stories. They took care of each other.

-Papa wore very large sunglasses.

-Papa treasured my letters. Around the age of twelve or so I decided that I wanted to write to him regularly. I wanted to know him. I never really got anything in return, but when we met in person he thanked me for them and my grandma, Bea, told me how much he enjoyed them. I continued writing letters to him faithfully until he passed away.

It’s harder to write about Papa because I had such limited time with him. I hardly knew him. But he was part of my family, and therefore, part of me. I always loved him, and I always will.

Pumpkin Patch

Elias inspecting a pumpkin on the ground.

We checked another item off of the Smith Family Fall Bucket List yesterday. We went to the pumpkin patch! We wanted to get some pumpkins which we will eventually carve and display on our balcony, but we also just wanted to get outside and enjoy fall.

Elias seemed to enjoy the time we spent at the farm. He crawled and toddled a little in the dirt and mud. He touched many pumpkins. But his favorite activity was pushing the big red wagon we used to carry our pumpkins. Unfortunately, it was not very easy for him because the ground was very uneven, and the wagon seemed to move faster than his little legs could keep up….so he ended up on his knees a lot. But he wanted to keep trying time after time. Below are some pictures from our time:

Elias standing with our first pumpkin. He is trying to push it around in the wagon.

Elias trying to push the wagon uphill. He worked so hard!

Are these two related or what? Daddy and Elias wear the same expression when searching for pumpkins.

Elias and Mommy stop to smile for the camera.

Elias wasn't sure what the pumpkins were for....but they made good percussion instruments!

10 Years Together

Today is the 10th anniversary of my first date with Nathan. We were 17 back then. We had already known each other for three years, and were in the same circle of friends. One year we even had almost every class together…but the fall of 2001 was when we finally began a “relationship.”

For our first date, we went to the Spaghetti Factory for dinner. Nathan dropped the bread on the floor. It became a fun inside joke for us.

Tonight we celebrated ten years by going to dinner together again. We already have a standing babysitter on Thursday night because of bell choir, so we dropped Elias off at Grandma Smith’s and headed out for some yummy dinner and dessert….just the two of us.

I am so blessed to have Nathan for a husband and a partner in life. Here’s to 10 more years together, and 1,000 more after that!
