We Survived

Today Nathan went back to work after three weeks of family leave. The short version? We survived!

I fully realize that this post is a first world problems type of post. I am so lucky that Nathan got to stay home at all. That I can stay home taking care of the boys. That we have no other bigger problems right now than adjusting to a new routine. But it is a big adjustment for everybody and realizing that they are first world problems doesn’t make the adjustment much easier.

We were all up super late last night because Nathan and I played in the Lessons and Carols service at our church. So as a treat, the boys all slept in until 7am or so. Within 10 or 15 minutes of getting out of bed, though, both Simon and Caleb were crying, Simon was screaming at me, “I want Daddy!!!!!!!”, and I didn’t see how I’d ever get to eat any meals. I really wanted to brush my teeth so that I could feel more human, and as I did so, Simon yelled at Caleb, “Stop Crying!!!!!!” It wasn’t a very good start.

As a whole, though, the day was pretty much as bad as I expected and as good as I could have hoped at the same time. Since the day was starting out so rocky, I decided I couldn’t really make it worse by trying to take a shower. I popped in a movie for the older two, got Caleb down for a nap, and prayed he would last at least five or ten minutes before wanting to be held. But I got a great surprise when he slept for a whole hour and a half! Not only did I get in my shower, but I folded three loads of laundry that had been cluttering up the floor of our bedroom, answered some emails, and spent some time with Elias and Simon baby free. And all before lunch!

The day had many ups and downs from there, and I won’t write a play by play here. I had lots of plans to try to go to playgroup or to try to go get Elias a haircut. None of those panned out. But hey…it was only my first day. Luckily it’s winter break and we have a lot of time to adjust.

After nap time, I decided that the boys needed some fresh air. We had a break in the wind and rain so I bundled us all up and we went out to ride bikes just in time to see Daddy get home from work. After some fun outside, we came in to warm up and I handed off Caleb to Daddy to give my arms and back a rest.

Upon seeing his Daddy, Caleb immediately gave Nathan the biggest grin. It was his first smile. The whole scene was adorable, but I had a hard time feeling happy for Nathan. I had spent all day caring for the kid, and then he gives Daddy his first smile. Thanks a lot! I guess I’m just the food source!

After that Caleb settled right in to his comfy spot.

20151221_183709Auntie Kristy and Uncle Scott (and James) brought us a delicious dinner so we didn’t have to cook for ourselves.

So…we survived. I can’t believe I will be doing it all over again tomorrow….and the next day…and all the days from now on! I know it will get easier and I am just trying to enjoy it however much I can.

What Lies Ahead

This afternoon we needed some down time between church service in the morning and The Festival of Lessons and Carols in the evening, in which Nathan and I are performing as members of the bell choir. I’ve really wanted to participate in the service, but it has caused me a great deal of anxiety and stress figuring out the logistics of who will care for the boys and where, and how we are going to do it all with a three week old. I will frankly just be glad when it is all over and my baby is back in my arms. Hopefully I will still be able to enjoy the service while I am there and not just worry the whole time.

We needed some down time so we allowed the boys to watch Ratatouille. At one point in the film, Remy, a rat and one of the main characters gets separated from his family and gets advice from an unlikely source. Remy is told, “If you only think about what you have left behind you will never be able to see what lies ahead.”

Even though it is just a kids movie, I feel like that was very timely advice for me today.

Tomorrow Nathan will return to work after three weeks of family leave. While I know I am perfectly capable of caring for my three boys on my own, the prospect of actually doing it is daunting. I have found myself thinking a lot about “before” and how good we had it. We had a nice routine going. Both boys were doing well. I had some personal time and was more well rested. It’s easier to dwell on the past than to try to figure out how our new routines and new way of life will be.

But as Remy finds in Ratatouille, it was good advice. There will be so many better things ahead of us. Once I realize I’ve been in that pattern of thinking I feel so guilty because Caleb has only added love and light to our family. Despite all the difficulty that comes with caring for a newborn, it is more than worth it. Onward and upward for us. I just have to keep reminding myself to look for what lies ahead.

The Olden Days

It’s like the olden days around here. Everything is new and hard and exciting with Caleb joining our family. But I am constantly reminded of almost three years ago when Simon was a newborn.

This morning I decided to have Caleb try some tummy time while I played with Simon. Instead of playing with me, Simon wanted to play with Caleb. He got right down in front of him and showed him the Baby Einstein music player.

20151215_083809It was a sweet moment and I reveled in the joy of watching the two boys interact. But I had to smile and laugh to myself because it wasn’t too long ago that I took this picture:

How the tables have turned! Things are old and new again at the same time.

Family Life

Today was the first day since coming home from the hospital that we haven’t had any visitors whatsoever. No one even quickly dropping off a meal. We just spent time home together.

Elias and Simon have really been loving playing the guitar with their Daddy, and got in some guitar time as dinner was baking.

20151208_185839These are the kinds of things that just seem so ordinary, but that I will wish we had more of as the years pass by. These may even be the things I forget. That’s why I write about the little things. I don’t want to forget the sound of their laughter and delight at guitar time with Daddy.

And yesterday morning before school Caleb was awake, alert, and happy. I set him down in Elias’ room and told him to play with his brother. He just instinctively knew exactly what to do. He got right down to Caleb’s level and started talking to him.

20151207_074235The whole thing was pretty magical and fun to watch. Simon joined in as well, and then the boys started showing Caleb all of their cars. They explained about the colors and the names. It will be fun to see how their relationship grows.

Oh Christmas Tree

20151206_191451Sunday evening Nana brought us dinner and we had plans to go to the Portland International Raceway to see Christmas lights. However, we were just too exhausted and had been out to many different places already over the weekend including family portraits, Christmas Tree hunting and church. We decided to take it easy at home and decorate our Christmas tree…something Elias and Simon were very much looking forward to.

We turned on the Manheim Steamroller Christmas Extraordinaire. ( A Bartle family tradition) and had a little dance party to the obnoxious synthesizer while getting in the Christmas spirit. Caleb was a little grumpy so Nana took him in the other room while we helped the boys hang ornaments.

There were only two ornament casualties this year which is great if you consider a five and two year old were handling glass ornaments. Our finished tree looks great and the boys are super proud. When we had hung every ornament, the boys wanted more and more. When I told them that was all we had Elias said, “but it’s so fun!”

Afterward, we took a picture of the four of us in front of the tree.

20151206_191555It’s funny how two weeks ago this would have been a family portrait. Now it’s a good picture, but it just feels incomplete without Caleb. Things change fast!

Caleb’s 2 Week Stats

Caleb will be two weeks old tomorrow. It seems like the second week went by even faster than the first. We took him to the pediatrician today for his two week well check. Everything seems to be good and he is a healthy baby boy.

We found out Caleb now weighs 9 pounds, 2 ounces…just one ounce shy of his birth weight. So effectively, he has reached his birth weight which is a goal by two weeks old.

Also, he is now measuring at 21.5 inches…a whole inch longer than at birth.

At the end of his appointment, he had to get his newborn screen done. Basically, they poke his heel and fill little circles with drops of blood. He was screaming pretty loudly, and in trying to calm him we attempted many different things. Finally, she gave me a pacifier.

I swore I would never give another of my children a pacifier after Simon became so addicted to them.

What have we done?

20151208_174055Nathan wanted to throw it away as soon as he saw it. I don’t want to overuse the thing…especially when Caleb is only two weeks old. But I have to admit it was really nice to have some peace and quiet during dinner this evening. Oh! The decisions of parenting.

Favorite Picture

This might be one of my favorite pictures of all time.

P8I mean…sure if Caleb and Simon were smiling I may have liked it even more.

But I really do love this picture just the way it is. Caleb screaming. Simon nervously trying to do what he is asked. Elias leading the way. It’s the way our family is right now and the photographer captured it perfectly.

I love my boys.

I Can Still Get My Craft On

I may be a tired, recovering from surgery, mother of a newborn, toddler and preschooler, but I can still get my craft on. I can’t do whole projects in one night anymore. Nathan and I don’t have much time to ourselves. That will go back to normal some day…but for now we do a lot of baby holding and attention giving to the older ones.

I did manage to finish one fun project, though. I wanted to capture how little Caleb is during this Christmas season, so I made this. I got the idea from pinterest.

20151205_215037It took me a number sessions to get it completed because I only have a few minutes at a time. Caleb absolutely hated doing the footprint. He just screamed and screamed while I painted his foot and then washed it off afterward. But I got his little footprint captured for all eternity, and he’s not scarred for life or anything. I’m sure he’s already forgotten about it.

Mission accomplished.

Christmas Tree Hunt 2015

Today we braved the weather and went out the Christmas Tree Farm to find our Christmas Tree. The boys were super excited for this adventure, otherwise (to tell you the truth) I may have backed out of the whole thing despite my Oregonian blood. Elias knew what to expect, but Simon was actually a bit disappointed when he found out that the farm consisted mostly of trees. Luckily the farm did have a few animals for him to see. (Cows and sheep).

Elias quickly found our tree. We did look around a bit more after he found the one he wanted, but we agreed that his tree was a good one. We posed in front of it for our annual family Christmas tree picture. Caleb was there. He is just sleeping warm in the wrap and didn’t show his face for the picture.

20151205_132737Nathan cut down our tree, and had an easier time of it because he didn’t have to lay down in the mud. The farm had cut a bunch of trees up from the ground to make them smaller. Our tree is about 7 and a half feet tall, but it was about three feet up from the ground before we cut it.

20151205_132840

After we got our tree, we looked for a tree to bring for Nana. Simon found Nana’s tree. Then we all hurried to the van, got out of our muddy clothes, and headed home for lunch and nap time.

Despite the rain and mud it was a fun outing for us!
