Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Mm)

We did a lot of fun Mm things last week! I think Mm has been one of Elias’ favorite letters so far. All week he said, “M says mmmmmmmmmmm,” and he tried to form the sign with his fingers. He knows what he is supposed to do, but isn’t coordinated enough to actually do it himself. Here is what we did:

M is for Matisse

Since Elias loves art so much I thought it would be fun to introduce him to some fine art. I showed him The Snail by Henry Matisse:

The Snail 1953 by Henri Matisse 1869-1954Elias doesn’t have the fine motor skills yet for using scissors. So I pre-cut some colorful shapes, and some border pieces. Then, I laid them all out on the table and gave Elias some glue and a white piece of paper. I helped him place the border, and then let him have at it. He knew right what to do. He was, of course, very excited about the gluing. It turned out very cute!

P1130851 P1130859 P1130862M is for Monkey/Mask

I had planned to do M is for monkey. We read 5 Silly Monkeys and then I was going to have him do a monkey face craft with a paper plate and some brown paint. As soon as he saw the tempera paint and the paper plate he insisted he wanted yellow. I tried to explain to him that monkeys are not yellow and that we could do another project later with yellow. He wasn’t having that. So I changed to M is for mask. I cut two eye holes in the paper plate, and let him paint with any colors he wanted. He had a lot of fun making the mask, but after the initial few seconds of wearing the mask he had no interest in keeping it on for good.

P1130871 P1130877M is for Map

I really want Elias to be raised with a more global perspective, so as one part of that, we are starting some geography lessons early! I realize he is a bit young to really grasp these sorts of concepts, but its never too early to start talking about the world, the country, the city, or the neighborhood. We looked a lot at our world map on the wall, and when we were at the store, I took him to the atlas section where we looked at a bunch of different maps, and he chose one of Portland for us to take him. Then, I started travel journals for both boys. I printed out a U.S. map for each of them, and colored in the states they’ve been to. We did the same with Canada and the world. Elias also got to color his own world map. I pointed out where all of our sponsored children are from compared to where we live. I envision the boys adding to the journal as we go places, possibly coloring in more states or countries, and adding postcards from places we’ve been.

M is for Money

Money is another thing we’d like Elias to have an awareness of from a young age. In order to teach him the beginning concepts of money, we’ve decided to give him an allowance. Here’s how it will work:

Each week, Elias will have a helping chart. Right now, every day he must brush his teeth, help clean up toys, and feed the kitties. He gets to put a sticker on his chart every day he completes these. If his sticker chart is full, he will get his allowance. We’ve decided to give him 4 quarters.

His quarters will be stored in three jars. One quarter will go in the “Save” jar. One quarter will go in the “Spend” jar. One quarter will go in the “Give” jar. The last quarter will be his choice. He can put it in any of the three jars. It will be totally up to him what he spends his “spend” money on, and where he gives his “give” money.

We started him out with four quarters in each jar. We had him count it out. He really enjoyed the counting, and the sound of the quarters clinking in the jars. He has also really enjoyed the sticker charts…which has been helpful especially for cleaning up toys! He probably won’t really understand what is going on until he actually gets to buy something at the store with his money. We’re going to try it out this way for awhile and see what happens. There may be changes in the future…or maybe it will work great!

P1130938

P1140190P1130995Elias is excited about helping to feed the kitties as well. I tried to take a picture of him in the act of feeding the cats, but he made a bit of a mess while trying to pour food in the bowl, and immediately said, “Uh Oh! I better sweep!”

P1130984 P1130986M is for Memory

I made Elias a memory game. I used this online template. Elias has been super excited about it, and wants to play every day. However, he really doesn’t understand how to play “real” memory. Mostly he just wants to pick up one card, and keep picking up cards until he finds the match. Then it is the next person’s turn. I let him play that way for now.

P1130975

M is for Mail

I got an old cardboard box and let Elias paint away. Then I turned it into a family mailbox. We can send each other letters or draw each other pictures. The painting was a big hit, but I think the concept of the family mailbox would be better for a slightly older child. Maybe we’ll try it again in a few years.

M is for Moses

Our Bible lesson for this week was Moses. Nathan read to Elias. Elias also contributed to me this morning that “M says mmmmmmm. Like Mary.” Good for him!

Bridge Stride

P1140101

Here we are going up the off ramp of the Fremont bridge.

“We walked too much.” That’s what Nathan said about our day today. We did walk a lot! (But I wouldn’t say it was too much). We did the Providence Bridge Stride for the first time. I wanted to participate in Bridge Pedal, but Simon is not old enough to ride in the bike trailer, so we had to settle for the 5 mile walk instead. It was still a ton of fun! We got to walk over the Fremont and Steel bridges as well as wind around down town and through some neighborhoods. Elias rode in the stroller for a good portion of the event, but walked a bit as well.

We were probably close to the last people who started the event. We arrived late as our usual fashion. (To our credit….the website said you could pick up registration materials all the way until 9am…so we thought arriving at 8:10 or so was pretty good. Turns out everyone else left the start line at 8:00). By the end, though, we had more than caught up with the pack, and enjoyed ourselves along the way. We definitely hope to do this again next year….hopefully on bikes!

Here are some pics from the top of the Fremont Bridge!

Enchanted Forest

We had a free Saturday morning, and had a number of things we thought would be fun to do today. We settled on taking the boys to Enchanted Forest…something we’ve been wanting to do for a while. We had a leisurely morning, packed a picnic, and headed down to Turner. Elias had a blast on Storybook Lane and he also loved the kiddy rides. We’ll definitely be going back next year and beyond! Before leaving Turner, we headed over to visit Great Grandpa Smith’s grave. We paid our respects and then drove on home to get ready for some cousin fun. Here are some pictures of our Enchanted Forest adventure:

Elias favorite part of Storybook Lane was Mary and the Lamb.

Elias enjoyed the Queen of Hearts’ maze, but I think he was seriously tempted to just crawl out under the walls. He kept bending down to look underneath them.

The shoe slide! Elias and Daddy went four times! Mommy and Simon went twice. It was quite fun.

You can tell he is nervous if you look at his face in this picture. We tried to tell him that rides being a little scary is what makes them fun.

Cousins!

Elias and Simon got to see their cousins a bit this evening. They drove all day from Spokane and arrived this evening. Elias warmed right up to his cousins and had them running around Nana’s house by the end of the evening.

Simon was a bit enamored with the girls. He kept giving them his biggest smiles. I think it was mutual….both girls wanted to hold Simon…so let the fun picture taking begin:

P1140067 P1140073Luckily they’ll be in town for two weeks so we’ll get to see them quite a bit in the near future!

What I Hope I Remember….

We are in the midst of the T’s here in the Smith household. We are in the tantruming twos and the teething tinies.

I won’t call them the terrible twos. Because it really isn’t terrible. In fact, up until not too long ago, I didn’t know what all the talk was about. Elias hardly ever tantrumed. This week, however, we have not yet had a tantrum-free day. So I have to ask myself is it me? Is it him? Is there a full moon?

Needless to say…it’s been a rough week. I love being a Mommy and I love staying home with my boys, but some days I just want to curl up and cry and the end of them. So instead of doing that…(because it really wasn’t that much of a joke)…I’m going to look back on the day and think about what I hope I remember. So that some day when I’m looking at a young mother who is complaining about tantrums and teething, I can say, “Yeah I remember that, but it was such a minor part of our lives together.”

……….

The sun streams through the cracks in the blinds and I lay in bed looking at my almost six month old. How can half a year have gone by already? He smiles at me with that twinkle in his eye, and shows off the pearly whites just under the surface of his gums.

……….

I hear my two year old rustling around in his bedroom, and go in to get him. He is sitting in his rocking chair in the dark. I bring him out into the kitchen where he promptly hugs his daddy…arms circled tight around the neck…and sends him off to work with some love.

……….

We are in the car driving to Ama and Baba’s. The two year old is in the back shouting “We’re going downhill! Wheeeeeeee!” Then he recognizes where we are and excitedly says “We’re almost there! I’ll find it! Don’t worry, Mommy. There’s Ama and Baba’s right there!”

………..

I am at the park chatting with a Mommy friend. We push our babies in the swings and they look around them, taking it all in. We compare notes and share stories. The babes are done swinging and we set them in the bark chips. They dig in to the new texture. We smile as they babble back and forth. I am not alone.

………

The baby fell asleep in the car, so we get him inside and put him in the other room for some quiet rest. Elias chooses some books for me to read to him before quiet time. The stack is large. I am so thankful he loves reading.

……….

The baby wakes up screaming. Nothing will calm him….not even my offer of milk (a first). I dance and sing and rub his back. I try everything I can think of, and after 20 minutes or so of failing I go in to check on the two year old and let him out of quiet time. As he talks and plays the baby looks at him in wonder as always and stops crying. Then I quickly stick a chilled teether in his hands. He promptly shoves it in his mouth and chews contentedly while watching his brother.

The teether working its magic.

The teether working its magic.

P1130914

………

Daddy will be home late today so we eat dinner without him. Elias insists on keeping a placemat for him at the table anyway. We think of him in our prayers. Elias cleans his plate, and with the last strawberry says, “MMMMMM, juicy sweet!.”

……….

Daddy is home and we are playing bat and ball outside. Elias whacks a ball off the tee, and says, “Oh! I’m so proud of me!”

………..

We come back inside for a bit of cool down before bed. Elias is so sweaty from the heat. I brush my fingers through his hair and it sticks straight up. I take the opportunity to get some silly pictures. We make faces for the camera and take turns pressing the button. I turn and capture a picture of Daddy and Simon in matching computer nerd t-shirts. This is the life.

Elias’ First Tubing Adventure

On Sunday we went to Henry Hagg Lake with Ama and Baba and Uncle Scott. We go at least once every summer on a hot day to cool off and have fun at the lake.

Swimming in the lake! Elias was a bit cold by this point.

Swimming in the lake! Elias was a bit cold by this point.

We left straight from church, and started out at the lake with a picnic on the boat. There is a 5mph or under section of the lake that we just sat in and drifted around while we ate our lunches. Then we suited up and went swimming. The lake was very cold, but it did feel really nice after a minute or so of getting used to it. And the nicest part was the air was so warm, that you didn’t feel cold getting out. Elias jumped into the lake three times. He even put his head under! (Although he didn’t seem too thrilled about that part).

Ama, Elias, and Uncle Scott on the tube.

Ama, Elias, and Uncle Scott on the tube.

After some play time in the water, we decided to do some tubing. My parents have a 4-person tube so we decided to let Elias have his first ride. He sat between Nathan and I and we were towed by the boat at about 3 mph. Elias loved it! So Uncle Scott (the driver) gradually edged up the speed until we were going about 8 or 10 mph. Elias had a blast. He kept saying, “Let’s go around another circle!” Finally, we stopped and let Ama and Uncle Scott have a turn. Elias got to stay on for another round.

At that point, Elias had been out in the sun for an hour or so, and even with sunscreen, we thought he needed a break. Elias came in, and Ama, Uncle Scott, and Daddy went out for a fast ride. Later Mommy got a turn too.

Now Elias can say he’s been tubing since he was 2! Here are a few more pictures of the boys enjoying the lake day:

Simon had a good time too! He didn’t go in the lake, but he got to dip his feet in off the back of the boat.

Lessons From My Toddler: At The Wading Pool

P1130847It was a beautiful day again here in Portland. I’ve been wanting to take the boys to the wading pool for a while now, so I took the opportunity to go today. I called Nana and invited her to come play with us.

Getting a toddler and an infant (and myself) ready for the wading pool was more difficult than I had planned on. But we made it out to the pool and the water was so inviting. Elias started having fun immediately. Nana joined us after a bit, and Elias played catch with her as well as just playing around the pool. Simon chewed on a lobster dive ring, sat in the water, and was exploring the texture of the concrete.

P1130838We had a lot of fun at the wading pool, but after a little over an hour, we had crept too far into Simon’s nap time, and he was starting to let us know it! I got out to get Simon changed, and told Elias he had a few more minutes to play, and then it would be time to get out. I changed Simon, and then came back to tell Elias it was time to clean up the toys we had used, and get out. He cleaned up a lot of toys. He was a very helpful boy. I told him it was time to get out, but he kept wanting to go clean up more toys. I thought he was just trying to extend his time in the wading pool so I was not very happy about it, but I let him clean up a few more things. Then we got out to go get dressed.

Elias cleaning up the toys.

Elias cleaning up the toys.

After we were all safely in the car, Simon fell asleep almost immediately. I was talking with Elias about our trip to the wading pool. I did not want him to fall asleep in the car! I asked Elias what his favorite part of the wading pool was. Without hesitation, he said, “My favorite part was cleaning up the toys.”

What?

I was stunned. The part I had tried to rush him through. The part I thought he would resist. The part I thought would be the least fun. After I recovered from my surprise, I asked him what else was fun about the wading pool. He said, “looking at the fountain, jumps, seeing Nana, and swimming.”

Then he asked me what my favorite part was. I think I said something about watching him splash and smile was my favorite part, but I was still thinking about his saying “cleaning up the toys” was his favorite part. It just made me think about how many moments I just pass through without really living them. Without really being present. Cleaning up the toys for me was a way to teach him to be conscientious about using public toys, and a way to transition him out of the pool. For him it was the best part. Because he was actually living in those moments. He’s got the right idea.

Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Ll)

Elias enjoyed our letter of the week activities a lot this week. He kept asking for our “art project” of the day. He also wanted painting…which was not included this week so I’ll have to include painting in some of our letter activities next week. Elias does not pronounce his L’s correctly yet. It’s one of those things that I’ll be sad about when he outgrows it. He kept saying “L says yuh yuh yuh!” Here is what we did:

L is for Legos

We did a fun math activity with his “legos” (they are really duplos). I made a small tower of duplos, and we counted how many there were. Then we used it to measure things in the house. Then, I asked him to estimate how many duplos tall certain objects were. After he made a guess, he got to build a tower to see how tall it really was. He did not really get what he was supposed to do at first, but after a few he got the hang of it, and enjoyed it a lot. We measured a few things that were not on my sheet. After about 10 minutes he lost interest in measuring, and decided he wanted to just play car wash. That was fine with me!

P1130606 P1130617 P1130625P1130621L is for Ladybug

We started out by reading 5 Little Ladybugs, then we made a lady bug craft out of craft foam. I pre-cut the pieces:

P1130668Elias’ favorite part was the gluing. This was the first time he has been so successful at gluing without my help. He had a ton of fun!

P1130675For the second ladybug, Elias decided that he wanted all googly eyes and no spots. That was fine with me. Here he is showing off his creations:

P1130683L is for Lazarus

We read the story of Lazarus. Later in the day when we were in the car, I brought the story up again to see what he remembered. I reminded him how Lazarus was sick and Jesus was very sad when he died. Elias said, “Yeah, Marfa and Mary were sad too.” It made me smile.

L is for Leaves

I collected some leaves on one of our trips to the park earlier in the week. Then, I gave them to Elias and he arranged them on the paper, and we did some leaf rubbings. I think this was a bit advanced for him…he wasn’t really able to grasp the crayon between two fingers, but instead just rolled it like he rolls play-doh. It just didn’t get pressed hard enough to the paper. I had to hold Elias’ fingers around the crayon, and apply some of my own pressure to help him. We won’t be trying crayon rubbings again for awhile! But Elias was proud of his work nonetheless!

P1130741P1130744

Elias took this picture of his work himself! I thought I would include it:

P1130749L is for Laces

I had bought Elias a lacing activity to help his fine motor skills a few months ago, but was waiting for the perfect opportunity to get it out. Lacing was a big hit! It really helped that the boards were made of wood and were really sturdy. He got the hang of putting the string through the holes really quickly, but did not go in order. That’s ok for now!

P1130780 P1130782

L is for Love

I printed out pictures of people Elias loves (basically our family). I had intended to get pictures printed in color at costco, but never got around to it, so I just printed them in low quality black and white on our home printer. Elias was still able to recognize everyone in the pictures so it served its purpose. Maybe someday we’ll make a nicer one!

P1130785

Then I had Elias choose a picture, put glue on the back and place it on the “L for Love.” He enjoyed naming all the people he saw as he went. He even said, “I love Simon,” when he saw his baby brother.

P1130788 P1130791

After he had placed all the pictures, I trimmed the edges. Elias showed his “L” to Daddy and said, “L is for Love.”

P1130794

L is for Little Red Riding Hood

Tomorrow I am going to tell Elias the story of Little Red Riding Hood. I don’t think he has ever heard it before.

We Gotta Read Some Books

Usually when I get Elias out of quiet time, he is itching to get out of his room. As soon as I open the door, he smiles and says, “It’s time to go out there!” and makes a beeline for the toys in our “main room” (as he calls it). Earlier this afternoon when I got him out of quiet time, I found this sight:

P1130778As I opened the door, he looked up at me and said, “Mommy, we gotta read some books!”

It was so cute. I picked up his pile, sat down, and put it back on my lap, then we dove in. Unfortunately, Simon woke up from his nap soon after we started. I went to get Simon, set up a small play area for him on the floor, and we got back to business. I ended up reading all the books in the above picture plus some others!

Simon’s Army Crawl

Simon is getter faster and faster at his army crawl. He is fast enough now that I was able to get a video of him going after a ball. Enjoy!

Another scary thing….Simon has moved a lot, but has stayed in our living room area. Tonight he left the living room for the first time. Oh no! Child proofing here we come!
