Doggy Boogers and Diaper Changes

At Elias’ last doctor appointment, his pediatrician recommended that we get a baby doll to have around as one of the things to help prepare Elias for his little brother. In fact, we had already bought a baby doll for him when he pointed at it and said, “baby” in the store.

However, Elias has never been much attached to this baby doll. He occasionally throws it up in the air, carries it upside down by one foot, or steps on it trying to get to other toys (all very reassuring signs for the new baby…..), but has not shown much interest in it other than that.

Actually, Elias has never been very interested in stuffed animals. He doesn’t have a comfort blanket. Up until a few days ago, he wouldn’t tolerate any blankets in his bed so we’d have to sneak one on after he was asleep.

Yesterday, Elias started talking about his doggy stuffed animal. And surprisingly, he wanted to have his doggy in the crib with him when he went down for a nap. Then the same thing at bedtime. And today, both nap time and bed time he wanted doggy with him.

But the cutest part was when I was going through Elias’ nap time routine with him. As we were rocking in the chair, Elias was holding his doggy, and all of a sudden said, “doggy has boogers.” He started pretending to pick the doggy’s nose, and then got a kleenex from the shelf next to the rocking chair to wipe it. I was amused, but mostly ignored it for the sake of the nap time routine. However, Elias then started giving his doggy a diaper change. He put the doggy on his back and talked about using the wet cloth to clean and then the dry cloth. He went through all the motions with his hands. He said, “It’s a big one!”

Anyway, I thought it was adorable. Even if he is not practicing on “baby,” I’ll take pretending on the doggy. In just about three months he could be changing his doggy while I change a real baby. Both a scary and a fun thought!

All Hallows Eve/ All Hallows Read

We celebrated All Hallows Eve and All Hallows Read today! Elias loves his Sheriff Woody costume so he wore it much of the day. After Daddy got home from work, we gave him a book for All Hallows Read, a tradition started by author Neil Gaiman. I told Elias to hold it up for the camera, and I got a bunch of pictures of him holding it above his head…until I finally convinced him to just hold it next to his tummy.

Elias with his new book for All Hallows Read

Then we read the book. Traditionally, an All Hallows Read gift is supposed to be scary. This one is appropriately “scary” for a two year old. Elias enjoyed it every time mouse said “EEEEEK” in the story.

Then, since it wasn’t raining (only sprinkling…..) we packed up Elias, costume and all, and drove over the the neighborhood where Auntie Kristy and Uncle Scott live (only a couple minutes away). We trick-or-treated at their house first. Then we went out to six or so houses in their neighborhood. At the first one, Elias cried, and I questioned my parenting decisions for pushing him to do it. But after the nice lady complemented his costume and gave him some candy, he warmed up to the idea of trick-or-treating quite quickly. By the end he was saying “trick-or-treat” and “thank you” like an old pro.

Elias and Daddy pose for a picture just before getting into the car.

Elias the trick-or-treater in action.

The only mishap of the night was when we almost lost his boot. We had been swinging Elias between us as we walked along the sidewalk…something he really enjoys. He actually says “one, two, three, weeeeee!” if we don’t do it fast enough. Anyway…on one of the weeee’s, Elias lost a boot. We did not notice. Poor Elias kept saying boot for twenty or thirty feet until I finally looked down and noticed he only had one boot. We quickly recovered the boot and continued our fun. After a few more houses, we went back to Uncle Scott and Auntie Kristy’s for a few minutes before heading home. We poured out all of Elias’ loot, and let him choose one. He chose the M&M’s. Overall a very fun evening.

A Baby Update

It’s week 26 of my pregnancy now and that leaves….just over three months until the due date. It’s causing mixed feelings. Up until a week or so ago I was feeling great. I was relatively small…I was in the great 2nd trimester phase. The due date still seemed a long way off.

I’m starting to feel big. I can’t bend over easily, and I get out of breath way too easily. Things hurt. So you’d think I would be looking forward to a quick next three months….it’s only going to get harder and harder as the weeks pass.

But frankly, as much as I want this second little boy in my life, he scares me. How will I handle two kids at once? How will we make enough room for another one? Are we even doing a good enough job with our first? We have a routine, you know…what will happen to that? What about bed time and meals and nap time? Will I give enough attention to Elias?

Sometimes I make myself go crazy with these kinds of questions.

But as with most things in life…I know that the time will pass and we will be ready enough and we will find new routines. Elias has so much loving family in town, and I love him more than he can even imagine right now so that will help us through.

God give me strength, and patience, and sanity during the next three months and beyond.

Getting Ready for Halloween

Elias practicing for Halloween in his new costume!

Sometimes rainy weekends are a blessing. As much as I love to be outside doing fun family activities, sometimes just spending a quiet weekend at home and inside is just what we need. Yesterday we relaxed all morning and played with Elias. We also got some of the much needed cleaning out done in our bedroom. (We have to somehow make room for a whole new person to live here in just a few short months, after all…and babies take up a lot of room).

We had been planning to attend the Spooktacular event at the Jenkins Estate so that Elias got try out/show off his Halloween costume before the actual day of Halloween. Since it was raining, though, we decided not to go out. We stayed in almost the whole day, then decided to go visit Uncle Greg since he is home for only one night before returning to work, and we haven’t seen him since the middle of September.

We dressed Elias up in his Halloween costume for the first time, and he loved it! The costume is a bit big for him…we’re probably good for another year if he still likes Woody and Bullsye! Elias also loved the hat, but it was hard to keep it on his head. I may have to rig up a strap for Halloween night.

The car ride over we coached Elias on saying “trick or treat.” He did not…but no matter. He loved showing off his costume to Uncle Greg, Ama, and Baba. He made out with five chocolates in his Mickey Mouse bucket. Not bad for one house!

For the entire first hour we were visiting, Elias was just giddy with excitement at seeing Uncle Greg. He just kept saying “Uncle Greg” over and over again. (He also loved seeing Ama and Baba). Luckily it will only be two weeks until our Bartle Thanksgiving celebration and we will get to see Uncle Greg again!

Fall Cookies!

The boys watching the World Series while Mommy prepares dough.

I love making sugar cookies because it reminds me of spending time with my grandmother. Every time I spent the night at my grandparents’ house, my grandma would make sugar cookie dough, and then we would roll it out, cut it into shapes, and bake it together. I always wanted to continue making sugar cookies with my own children….but it’s a lot more work than regular cookies. There are more dishes, there are many more steps, you have to make dough and frosting, the dough has to chill before baking, they have to be decorated….I could go on. So…we rarely make sugar cookies.

However, I put make fall cookies on our bucket list because I wanted to be sure to fit it in at

Halloween shapes! Cats, moons, bats, pumpkins, and witches!

some point. A week or so ago, Nathan and I discovered that we had a free evening coming up, so this evening, as soon as Elias woke up from his nap, I made the dough. Then I made dinner and we ate it while the dough chilled. Finally, it was ready!

Elias picked out some Halloween cookie cutters, and I added a few sports ones as well. It is the first day of the World Series after all, and football season is also well on its way. Elias had a lot of fun

Sports themed cookies ready for frosting! Helmets, footballs, baseball caps, and trophies!

decorating as usual. He was quite proud…and while the floor still needed major sweeping, he was a lot less messy than in previous decorating sprees.

Now we have yummy sugar cookies for the next week or so!

Elias was sure to put the caps back on the sprinkles when he was through with them.

Elias decorates a cookie with red sprinkles….lots of red sprinkles.

Pumpkin Carving!

After choosing three prize pumpkins at the pumpkin patch on Saturday, we wanted to be sure to carve them soon! Last night we had planned to carve them, but had to change plans…so tonight it was! I had naively assumed that pumpkin carving would be a family activity…but it took way longer than anticipated, and Elias lost interest very quickly since he was not allowed to use any sharp objects. I think he still got some fun out of it, but mostly I just felt bad that he was playing by himself while Nathan and I carved at the table. The other disappointment was that I somehow picked pumpkinzilla from the pumpkin patch. This pumpkin had the hardest shell/skin Nathan or I had ever seen. It made carving very difficult, time consuming, and quite frankly, painful. Luckily it all turned out ok. Elias ended up with a slightly later bed time, but we ended up with two carved pumpkins (the third will have to wait for another day). Here is our pumpkin carving in pictures:

The set-up: Elias all ready in his chair to help carve pumpkins!

Elias coloring the back of his pumpkin while Mommy and Daddy cut open the tops of theirs. (Actually…to be fair…Nathan cut open both tops. Pumpkinzilla was too difficult for me.)

Elias is amused by Nathan who is scooping pumpkin innards:

Elias helps scoop pumpkin innards. He’s very serious about it.

Excited boy!

Nathan’s Pumpkin: The Glider. Apparently it’s a hacker symbol of some sort. You probably either already know more than me, or know nothing about it…ask Nathan if you want to know more.

My pumpkin: The Kitty. I asked Elias what he wanted me to carve and he chose a cat. I carved this kitty sitting on a pumpkin.

Hermione’s Teeth Adventure

Hermione with her bandage….she is trying to decide if she wants to eat or not. She mostly has just sat in front of her food and water but not eaten much. They say her appetite should return to normal tomorrow.

The first time a veterinarian told me about the cleaning of my cat’s teeth, the look on my face must have been quite amusing. Really? Put a cat under anesthesia? For a teeth cleaning?

But now four years later, I have been told every year that Hermione just is unlucky. She has bad teeth. It did look pretty bad to me. I started asking around about it. I asked other vets I knew personally who all recommended it. I asked friends who had actually had their pets’ teeth cleaned. I read about diseases that cats can get from unhealthy teeth. So Nathan and I did what I thought we’d never do. We made an appointment to get Hermione’s teeth cleaned. (Olive is a lucky cat…she doesn’t need it).

I was quite nervous to have her put under, but everyone assured me that it would all be fine. I woke Elias up early, put a sweatshirt and a raincoat over his pajamas, and took him and Hermione out in the rain to drop her off for her appointment.

I have to admit that although I have been up early every morning since Elias was born (sometimes way too early!), I don’t know that I’ve actually been out of the house driving around in the early morning at all over the last two years. When I worked over the summer I had to be out of the house very early, but it was light then… driving around on a pitch black stormy morning made the whole ordeal seem more dramatic.

Elias and I dropped Hermione off at the vet. I told him she had to go to the doctor. When we left without her, he started crying quite hard and said, “I love Hermione.” It was both extremely sad and extremely cute at the same time. He was saying “Hermione doctor” all day.

We got to pick Hermione up around 5:00. She seems a bit tired/a bit out of it…but what can you expect for anesthesia? She pretty much sailed through…at least it looks that way now. It was expensive and a big ordeal for just a teeth cleaning…but if it prolongs her life or prevents disease then it was worth it.

Pumpkin Patch!

Elias didn’t want to ride in the wagon…he wanted to help pull it.

We took Elias to the pumpkin patch today. It was our second year in a row getting pumpkins from the farm rather than the grocery store. On our drive out to the farm, we were a bit nervous because we were pretty much in the middle of a torrential down pour. But by the time we reached the parking lot, it had stopped raining, and the sun even showed its face during our stay at the farm!

Searching for the right pumpkin

Elias enjoyed looking at the pumpkins. He wanted us to take many, many pumpkins in our wagon. After about ten minutes, though, he found the perfect one. We came home with three very large pumpkins (Each of us chose one). Stay tuned to see pictures of them carved in the next couple of days.

When we got home from the pumpkin patch, I baked an apple pie with some of

Elias and Daddy stopping for a posed picture.

the apples from our apple picking excursion a couple weeks ago. Then we prepared our house for a fun dinner with some other couples from our church. Elias started screaming hysterically when they all came over (even though he’s seen them before many times). But he calmed down relatively quickly, and by the end of the night he was singing songs and playing with them. He even gave one of the older gentlemen a hug goodbye! Oh, the adventures of having a toddler.

Elias trying to lift the pumpkin he ended up choosing to take home with us.

We are just so thankful that we have opportunities to spend time with family and friends…both indoors and out!

Elias’ First Sleepover!

Elias’ pediatrician recommended that we start having Elias sleep over at Ama and Baba’s house about once a month from now until when they baby arrives since they will be taking care of him while we are in the hospital. She said the transition will be easier for him if he thinks it is a fun night just for him rather than being pushed out so we can go have the baby. It makes sense.

So last night when Nathan and I celebrated 11 years together, and were going to be out very late anyway, we decided to give a first sleepover a try.

I probably had a harder time than Elias. My parents said he did ask for me in the morning, and was a little nervous at going to sleep in a new place…but for the most part he thought it was great. He loved it.

It wasn’t so hard on me last night since we were at the concert. But this morning it was weird. I woke up and there were no soft breaths on the monitor. It was so quiet when I ate breakfast by myself. Morning maintenance chores (laundry, dishes, vacuum/sweeping) got done so quickly. But with one successful sleepover under our belt, I think they will only get easier each time.

My little boy is growing up!

11 Years Together and a Rock Concert!

Tomorrow will be the 11th anniversary of my first date with Nathan. We were in high school. We had known each other for three years prior to our first date. We went out to dinner at the Spaghetti Factory. Nathan dropped a loaf of bread on the floor. We have fun memories.

We wanted to celebrate 11 years together, so when I found out that my favorite band (and one of the only bands that both Nathan and I like) was going to be in Portland on October 18th, so close to our first date-aversary, I thought it was perfect. Nathan agreed, and we bought tickets.

I was introduced to Switchfoot in college by a good friend. They are almost completely unique in my book. A Christian band, with Christian lyrics, with a non Christian music sound. Jon Foreman speaks truth through his music in ways that not many other artists can do.

This is not the best picture…but at one point during the concert, Jon Foreman came out into the audience. We were only about ten feet away. Very exciting.

Anyway, I was super excited because I had never been to a concert before. Nathan and I took Elias to Ama and Baba’s, got some dinner at the Olive Garden, then headed to the Crystal Ballroom to enjoy the concert. We were not disappointed. The opening act, Paper Route, was actually quite good. We bought a cd. But Switchfoot was excellent. They put on a good show, sang some great tunes, and really made it an upbeat, exciting night for everyone. Nathan and I did feel a bit old at times. The crowd was mostly younger than us….I did not have enough energy in my 24 week pregnant body to be jumping up and down and yelling the whole time. And standing for three hours was not easy on me either. But Nathan said it is possibly the best concert he’s been to…and that’s saying something…so it was definitely worth it.

The highlight of the night for me was their final song, Where I Belong. It’s a song of such hope and truth. Being there in person to see Jon Foreman singing it was very moving. I have to admit it brought tears to my eyes. And even though it was my first concert…I have to say that is probably pretty unique for a rock concert.

Switchfoot
Where I Belong lyrics

Feeling like a refugee
Like it don’t belong to me
The colors flash across the sky

This air feels strange to me
Feeling like a tragedy
I take a deep breath and close my eyes
One last time
One last time

Storms on the wasteland
Dark clouds on the plains again
We were born into the fight

But I’m not sentimental
This skin and bones is a rental
And no one makes it out alive

Yeah

Until I die I’ll sing these songs
On the shores of Babylon
Still looking for a home
In a world where I belong

Where the weak are finally strong
Where the righteous right the wrongs
Still looking for a home
In a world where I belong

Yeah

Feels like we’re just waiting, waiting
While are hearts are just breaking, breaking
Feels like we’ve been fighting against the tide

I wanna see the earth start shaking
I wanna see a generation
Finally waking up inside

Yeah

Until I die I’ll sing these songs
On the shores of Babylon
Still looking for a home
In a world where I belong

Where the weak are finally strong
Where the righteous right the wrongs
Still looking for a home
In a world where I belong

A world where I belong

This body’s not my own
This world is not my own
But I still can hear the sound
Of my heart beating out
So let’s go boys, sing it loud

And on the final day I die
I want to hold my head up high
I want to tell You that I tried
To live it like a song

And when I reach the other side
I want to look You in the eye
And know that I’ve arrived
In a world where I belong

In a world where I belong
In a world where I belong
Where I belong
Where I belong

Where I belong
Yeah
Where I belong
Yeah!

I still believe we can live forever
You and I we begin forever now
Forever now
Forever
I still believe in us together
You and I we’re here together now
Together now
Forever now
Forever now
Forever now

Forever
Forever
