Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Nn)

It’s been more like Nn month than Nn week here. We’ve been out of town, and had family visiting. Things are starting to settle down around here, though, so we’ll be able to get back into our alphabet study routine as well. We did a bunch of Nn things over the last few weeks.

N is for Nana

We talked about Nana, and I asked Elias his favorite things about Nana, and his favorite things to do with Nana. He needed a little bit of help getting going, but once I suggested one or two things, he named the rest. I wrote them down on little slips of paper, had Elias paint a giant heart, and glued them all together on an art project for Nana’s fridge.

P1140220 P1140221N is for Numbers

Elias has been more and more interested in numbers and counting recently. I bought some number stickers and a roller paint brush. I like to have Elias try different textures and methods for painting. We had never done the roller brush. It turns out he loved it! In fact, he loved the whole project so much that he has asked to do it again and again! I had him stick some number stickers on a piece of paper. Then he painted over them with the roller brush. In the morning after everything dried, we peeled away the stickers and the numbers were still underneath. He said it was “like magic.”

P1140369 P1140374 P1140387N is for Narwhal

Elias knew of the word “narwhal” because of a set of letter flashcards he has. However, he didn’t know anything else about the animal. When we were at a discount bookstore a couple weeks ago, I found a book about narwhal for really cheap so I picked it up. Elias has really enjoyed reading this book. It’s another we’ll read over and over.

P1140451N is for Nun chucks

We made toilet paper roll nun chucks! I collected two toilet paper rolls and a shoe lace. I instructed Elias to paint them with his roller brush. However, he decided that it would be more fun to just roll the toilet paper roll in the paint himself. That was fine with me. After they dried, I connected them with the shoelace and we went to town playing with them. Elias didn’t really have any context for how to play with them at first. He looked at me like, “what am I supposed to do with this?” but I had some fun giving him some demonstrations. Then, when Daddy got home, he joined the fun as well.

P1140431 P1140450 P1140457N is for Noah

We read the story of Noah’s ark in Elias’ children’s Bible. We read this story all the time anyway, but this time I was careful to point out how Noah started with Nn. Elias took note, but then wanted me to just get on with the story.

N is for Nine

Nine innings, that is! We went to three different baseball games during the period that we were studying letter Nn. Unfortunately, we had to leave one after only 3 innings due to rain. Another was tied so we stayed for 10. One of the games actually did have nine innings, though!

Indiana: Part IV – Baseball

We just so happened to schedule our trip to Indiana and Ohio when the Dodgers were playing a series against the Reds in Cincinnati. So we had to catch a couple games! Nathan and his Dad have been to a few baseball games together, but never a Dodgers game so it was extra special.

The last time we went to a Reds game, they were playing the Braves so we were cheering for the Reds with the rest of them. This time, though, we brought our Dodger blue. I was a bit nervous about cheering for the visiting team. But Reds fans were very generous and good spirited. (There were quite a few Dodger fans too!)

Friday night we made it to Cincinnati in time for the first game of the series. I used some of my summer school earnings to get us some really nice seats on the first level right around third base. The game was so late, but we had a ton of fun. Both boys stayed up the entire time. We could not believe how either of them could still be awake…Simon especially! Here are some pictures from our game:

I took about a hundred family pictures (ok maybe more like 20) and this was the best of the bunch. They are actually quite hilarious to look at. Elias and Nathan both are talented at funny facial expressions.

Our view during the game

On Saturday, we got to go to a day game. It was HOT so we were very lucky that this time, our seats were at the very top of the stadium…in the shade. I had to hike up and down the very steep steps about 8 times for diaper changes and food and other such things, but the shade was worth it! We had a beautiful view.

On Saturday, Nathan’s aunt and uncle and some other family members game to the game so we had a large Dodgers cheering section. Simon did fall asleep at this game so he missed out on some of the fun, but I was glad he finally got some rest!

Unfortunately, the Dodgers lost both games we were at. We’ll just have to go and see them again some time! Here are some pictures from Saturday’s game:

Indiana: Part III – Helicopters

Our third Indiana adventure actually took place in Ohio. Thursday we packed the boys up and drove to Chillicothe, Ohio, where my brother now works. Uncle Greg just started as a life flight pilot for Air Evac a few months ago in Portsmouth, Ohio. He recently transferred to their Chillicothe base because it is closer to his home. In fact, the day we arrived for a visit was his first day at the new base.

P1140674

It was a long car ride for the boys, but they did pretty well. We were excited to finally get to our destination. We called Greg, and he suggested we have a barbeque, so we went to the grocery store, got some fixings, and headed to the base.

P1140680

It looks like a really great place to work, and Greg seems happy so it was all a big sister could ask for.

P1140689As we were fixing dinner, Greg got a call. He left to go start up the helicopter. I was disappointed that it cut our time together short, but I was excited to watch him take off. It turned out that the people at the scene called him off. They were close enough to Columbus that they could make it by ambulance. So Greg sat back down and ate dinner with us.

After dinner, Greg took us on a tour of the helicopter. Elias was too nervous to climb inside, but Simon got to sit in the pilot’s seat! We all had fun exploring the helicopter.

P1140698 P1140702 P1140713Friday morning we had plans to see Greg at his base again. He called us just as we were leaving our hotel to say that he was about to take off from a nearby hospital to transfer a patient. We hurried over, and got to see him take off. He was gone for about an hour, which gave us time to procure some lunch, and meet him back at the base to see him land. It was pretty much perfect timing!

We got to eat lunch together, and then explore the helicopter again before we had to leave for the next phase of our trip. This time, Elias climbed in the pilot seat, and into the back of the helicopter. He had a lot of fun.

P1140769 P1140775I was so happy that we got to see Greg as much as we did, but it was harder to say goodbye this time because we don’t know when we’ll see him next. It is nice to have a place to picture when I think of him. Hopefully we’ll get to see him again soon!

Indiana: Part II – Family Time

The second phase of our trip to Indiana was full of family time. Nathan has a lot of family over there. On Labor Day we all gathered at Uncle Dave and Aunt Barb’s house for a big barbeque. One of Nathan’s cousins came with her children. Great Grandma was there too! Elias had a lot of fun playing with his cousins. He especially loved the marbleworks.

P1140553Then a lot of the kiddos went outside with Nathan and Uncle Dave to play baseball. Simon and I went to watch. Elias had fun chasing after stray balls.

P1140562 P1140577Cousin Josiah had a lot of love for my boys.

P1140589 P1140593Then we went back inside, and Simon got to hang out with Grandpa and Great Grandma.

P1140595 P1140605Tuesday was our only low key day of the trip. We got to stay at Grandpa’s house and play with the exception of a small grocery store trip and a trip to the park to play on another merry-go-round. Actually, Elias had quite a few adventures at the park. There were a TON of cool slides, and he tried them all!

P1140616 P1140623 P1140642Then on Wednesday it was back to Uncle Dave, Aunt Barb, and Great Grandma. We didn’t have all the cousins, but we had a lot of fun nonetheless. Simon got to try out the jumper, and he absolutely loved it! I could hear his giggles from the other room.

P1140663We loved spending time with family!

Indiana: Part I – Indianapolis

We recently returned from another great Indiana adventure. We have so much family in the mid-west now. Our trip was almost too busy. We definitely ran the boys ragged. Simon is still a bit sick, and Elias was more tired than normal.

The boys did pretty well on the flight from Portland to Chicago. Elias is old enough to realize what an airplane is, what it does, where it goes…etc. So he was quite afraid at first. He refused to go down the jet way. Nathan had already taken our car seats and carry-on bags down the jet way so I was stuck trying to get both boys on the plane. Luckily a nice lady offered me help! After the initial nervousness, though, the flight went pretty smoothly. Once in Chicago, we got our rental car and drove down to Indiana. We were super excited to see Grandpa. The boys bonded by watching a bit of a Dodgers game before bedtime:

P1140466The next morning, we drove down to Indianapolis to meet Greg and Shaina for the day. We went to Eagle Creek Park which is one of the largest city parks in the U.S. It was an amazing park, and I was so excited to see Greg after so long!

P1140474 P1140482 P1140484After a picnic lunch, we went over to one of the play grounds. Elias was introduced to a merry-go-round. He loved that thing! He loved it so much that he ran over and jumped on, joining a whole group of kids already on it. I was shocked and amazed. It was so uncharacteristic of him, but I had fun watching him spin around with the other kids.

P1140503Here are Daddy and Grandpa watching the merry-go-round fun!

P1140505After awhile we went to a different location in the park. Elias and Uncle Greg enjoyed playing fishing together among other things.

P1140525

We finished the evening by going out to dinner. The day went way too fast, but I’m glad we got the opportunity to see Greg and Shaina while we were in the mid-west!

The Boys

Life has been messy since we got back in town Monday evening. Suitcases everywhere, cat hair everywhere, very tired jet-lagged kiddos, husband working late, potty training messes. But I know life will calm down and we will find our rhythm.

This evening after Nathan got home I got to take some time to get some things back in order by unpacking. I stopped to watch him playing with the boys. I love them all so much:

P1140899I’ll be sharing some about our trip to Indiana and Ohio in the coming days. We had a blast!

A Little Slice of Family Life

Last night was our last Hops Game. That makes a total of eight this season for Nathan, seven for Elias, and six each for me and Simon. We loved seeing the Hops play.

Last night was supposed to be the season ending celebration for Nathan’s softball team. Nothing like watching a little baseball to celebrate a fun summer softball league. The clouds looked dark, but we grabbed our raincoats and headed out for some fun. Here is the fam waiting for the game to begin:

P1140398 During the first couple innings it sprinkled on and off, but we didn’t let that stop our fun. However, by the third inning, it was starting to come down pretty good. More and more fans were abandoning their seats for the upper level where food is sold. We are true Oregonians, though, and stayed in our seats all the way until a rain delay was called. We did question the intelligence of this considering I was feeling sick, and we have a baby and a toddler…but it was warm rain so no harm done….

P1140399When the rain delay was called, we decided to head home. Sorry Hops! I did get a picture with Barley the Hop before leaving, though!

P1140401When we got home, we just spent some time together before putting the boys to bed. Elias and Simon played with their footballs from Auntie Kristy, Simon gave out some slobbery kisses, and Elias took a few pictures himself! It’s a little slice of family life:

Fountain Fun

Today was the last day that Auntie Erin, Audrey and Sonya are in town for this round of family visits. We are sad to see them go. We went to the 53rd Avenue park in Hillsboro to have fun together, and then had dinner in the evening so Nathan could see them again as well.

The park was fun because there is a playground, sand area, and fountains. All of the kids enjoyed making the rounds to all of the adventures the park had to offer. Simon got to have his first time playing in fountains since he is able to sit up now.

Here are some pictures of our fun:

I made a fort for Simon. The one downside of the park is the lack of shady areas. Simon fell asleep for a nap so I made a shady fort for him. He slept in there for thirty minutes or so (I think). I thought he might be upset to find himself in there when he woke up, but he wasn’t phased at all. He turned himself onto his stomach, and started crawling out. His little head poked out and he looked at me like, “I’m back!”

P1140286Here is a cute one of Simon and Nana after he woke up:

P1140293Eventually, I got Simon all dressed in his swim trunks and brought him to the one fountain that just bubbles the whole time. He loved it! He was fascinated with the water and played for a long time. Occasionally, he put his fingers just right so that the water squirted up into his face. He was startled, but always recovered quickly. By the end his face was dripping wet.

P1140297 P1140308 P1140322 P1140345Elias had fun at the fountains too. He was pretty tentative, but said it was his favorite part about the park during our car ride home.

P1140331 P1140318Elias and Sonya came over to play with Simon for a bit. There was room for everyone!

P1140313 P1140330And just for fun….I think this may be photo evidence of Simon’s first “Bartle stare.”

P1140334What fun!

Brothers, Cousins, and Other Fun

We’ve been having a lot of fun around here the last couple of weeks. Nathan’s sister and our nieces have been in town so we’ve been spending time with them almost every day. It has been so much fun to see Elias playing with his cousins since he is usually pretty shy about interacting with kids around his age. Simon has received a lot of attention from his cousins as well. Last night Audrey was leaning in to kiss him, and he kept “kissing” her right back…slobber and all.

Elias has been taking a few “risks” that he wouldn’t normally take as a result of being with his cousins. For example, last week at the park he played with Audrey and another girl he had never met before, then when he lost interest in their game of “house,” he went over to some stumps and jumped off of them. I got a fun picture of a jump:

P1140203But more fun for me, Elias has been willing to get a bit closer to Simon. Maybe seeing the girls loving on Simon has rubbed off a bit. Or maybe he is just ready himself. Either way, I got a picture I’ve been waiting for for a long time! Brothers!

P1140247I believe I posted the first version of this picture when Simon was a month old or so, and Elias was almost completely across the couch from him. Look at that…they are touching! Actually….now that Simon is mobile, he gets into Elias’ space a lot more than Elias would like. He is pretty good about it most of the time, but has on occasion elbowed Simon out of the way. It’s a work in progress. After I got some pictures of the boys together, we decided to try to get all of the cousins together on the couch. In the process, Simon got a little upset. Elias decided he had had enough, and moved off the couch…but not before I snapped this picture:

P1140248Everyone else stayed for a fun cousin photoshoot:

P1140251Then I bribed Elias to get back on the couch by telling him he could take a picture if he got on the couch and let me take one first. It worked!

P1140252In other news, Simon has been working on sitting up a lot lately. He has made a lot of progress in the last 5 or 6 days. Here he is practicing this morning before Elias woke up:

P1140236And here he is showing off his skills in the evening:

P1140268Simon also got to play a bit of dress up this evening. Audrey put the hat on him, and he tolerated it pretty well!

Simon – 6 Months

Simon is now 6 months and one week old. It’s hard to believe it’s been more than half a year already. He’s had a few milestones recently.

1. He’s got teeth! Simon has his two bottom middle teeth. His smile is so cute, but I have to admit I was pretty disappointed to see those poke through. He is growing too fast! His perfect little gums are no more. Onward and upward I guess is how it always goes. It’s a good thing, but my sentimental Mommy hormones made me sad to see babyhood disappearing right before my eyes.

2. He’s eating solids! Well….sort of. We started him on some oatmeal cereal last night, and he ate some again this morning for breakfast. He did pretty well with it all. I think he will be more excited to start actually handling some food himself in a few days.

3. He got his first sand in his eyes/mouth. We went on a family camping trip to the beach for a few days last weekend. We spent a whole day at the beach without getting too much sand on him. However, we went back the next day, and I stopped paying attention for a few seconds, and he ended up face planting into the sand. He also managed to grab a bunch in his fist, and proceeded to stick it in his mouth. Yuck!

We had Simon’s 6 month dr. appt. a few days ago. Here are his stats:

Weight: 20 pounds, 3.3 ounces (88 %)

Height: 27.4 inches (80%)

So….he’s slowed down a bit in the growth. Probably because he’s started moving around!
