Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Gg)

I got a bit behind on writing for the blog. Nathan and I have been spending our evenings after the boys are in bed taking in Arrested Development season 4. We got a free netflix trial for one month so we’ve got to take advantage while we can. Last night, we finished the 15th and final episode so I told Nathan I needed a break from tv watching.

We talked about the letter G in our house last week. To be specific, we talked only about hard G. We had a lot of fun so we’ll keep plugging along the alphabet. Here is what we did:

Saturday: G is for Goody’s

We took a trip to Sunriver, Oregon over Memorial Day weekend. One long standing tradition of our family trips to Sunriver has always been going to Goody’s ice cream shop. Since Elias doesn’t like ice cream, I bought him a chocolate covered pretzel instead. When I offered it to him, he stated emphatically that he did not want it. He did, however, steal the chocolate truffle I had purchased for myself. I was skeptical if he’d do more than take one small bite. However, after his first bite, he said, “MMMM!” and popped the rest of it in his mouth where he struggled to chew it for the next couple minutes. He enjoyed that truffle a lot!

P1120214 P1120225Sunday: G is for Goliath

Since we were out of town and not attending church on Sunday, I thought it would be good for us to do our Bible lesson on Sunday. We did the David and Goliath story. Nathan read it aloud to Elias and talked with him about it. When we went to the pool in the early afternoon, we drove past the Sunriver community church and saw the parking lot was packed! That made us feel like sinners….I guess no one is perfect.

Monday: G is for Glitter

Elias has enjoyed using glitter in his art class so I thought it would be fun to do a project with glitter. However, the nice thing about art class is that you don’t have to deal with the mess! Since we were going to be at home, I went with glitter glue sticks instead of traditional glitter. I was going to have Elias accent a piece of art/picture with the glitter glue, but he had a hard time getting it out at first. Once he figured out how to squeeze the tubes and actually get some out, he mostly wanted to make big piles of it. So I just let him go to town on a blank piece of paper. He asked me to help him write his name and draw a few shapes so he squeezed while I moved his arms. But mostly, he just had fun trying something new!

P1120305 P1120309Tuesday: G is for Gorilla

We read the book “Goodnight Gorilla.” Elias loves that book!

Wednesday: G is for Greg

We talked about Uncle Greg, who has moved to Ohio, and we painted a few pictures to send to him. I will not show them here so that they will be a surprise to Uncle Greg once I figure out what his new address is.

Thursday: G is for Guitar

We did a guitar art project, then I got out our guitar and played a bit for Elias. First, I cut out a guitar shape from a piece of cardboard and let Elias paint it with tempera paints. After that dried, we cut out a black circle and attached pipe cleaners for the strings. Then we got out the guitar. Unfortunately, I hadn’t played for a long while and I found that I had forgotten a lot of the chords I used to know. Luckily I was able to manage a couple songs to sing with him. I held the guitar and fingered the chords while he strummed. He was so excited to actually be playing.

P1120318 P1120339Finally, Elias got to hold and “play” the guitar all by himself. He played for Simon who was quite interested in the sounds it was making!

P1120331On Friday, Elias showed off his guitar to Baba

P1120347Friday: G is for Garbage

I checked a bunch of books about garbage, garbage trucks, and recycling out from the library. We read them together. Some of Elias’ favorites were I Stink by Kate and Jim McMullen and Trashy Town by Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha. We also read a couple nonfiction books about garbage trucks.

A new toy

We decided to get the old “round-the-world gym” out to see if Simon could play in it. He has been holding his head up pretty well lately. After getting it out of storage and dusting it off, we put Simon in. He did pretty well in it. Better than that, Elias took an interest in the toy too, and the boys got to play together quite a bit. Take a look:

About a year ago I picked up a pair of five-gallon buckets to serve as emergency toilets. You know what ladies like? Toilet seats. So finally this past week I ordered a seat.

Memorial Day Weekend – A Lot of “Firsts”

We took advantage of the long weekend to get out of town for the first time since Simon was born. As a result, we had a lot of firsts this weekend. We had a lot of fun together as a family. Here are some of our firsts:

Simon’s first long car trip

The trip to Sunriver was just over four hours for us on the way there (and about five and a half on the way home). It was Simon’s first long trip in the car. The way there, we only had to stop once to feed Simon and let Elias stretch his legs. It was a great start to our trip!

Simon’s first time in Sunriver

Elias has been to Sunriver a couple timesĀ  a year since he was born, but Simon had not made a visit yet. When we got to the house (thanks Ama and Baba for letting us stay there!), we got out lots of toys while Daddy unloaded the car. Simon enjoyed some tummy time:

tummy timeThen Mommy unpacked while the boys played catch. Elias loves catch these days. If you look in the upper left corner of the picture you can see the yellow ball whizzing toward Elias:

P1120201First use of our bike trailer

We were given a bike trailer for a gift recently, and took it out for a first spin this weekend. I took Elias on Saturday afternoon while Simon napped. He loved riding along, and enjoyed shouting “Wow! We’re going fast!” whenever I could actually manage to go fast. That thing is heavy on the up hills. We rode around the bike paths for awhile, then went to the park to play.

P1120211On Sunday morning, Daddy took Elias out again. This time, Elias made sure he was equipped. He brought three “friends” (Woody, Chewbaca, and Minnie Mouse), a snack, and a water bottle. It had rained over night so we got to test out the rain shield. In the afternoon, Elias wanted to go for another ride so I took him out again. This will be even more fun when both boys can sit back there for a ride together.

P1120238 P1120240Simon’s first swim

Simon loves the bath, but he had never actually been swimming in a pool. We took him for his first swim on Sunday afternoon. He didn’t seem to mind it, but was very subdued the whole time. I think he may have been a bit over stimulated. There was so much noise, so many people, and a lot of new sensations for him. Here are the boys getting ready in their swim suits:

P1120249And me in the pool with the boys:

P1120267Elias had a lot of fun doing “jumps.” He didn’t seem to understand that he shouldn’t jump to the person holding Simon…so Simon got splashed multiple times…and even soaked a couple times. He always just looked a bit surprised, but took it in stride. Then again…maybe Elias did know and was just getting an early start on toughening his little brother up! Here is Elias getting ready to jump.

P1120257Elias’ first sleep in a big bed

Now that Elias has outgrown the bassinet (and Simon uses it), we had to put Elias somewhere else to sleep. We made up a nice bed for him on the floor with a fold out mattress. He enjoyed that the first night. The second night, though, he got smart and realized there were much comfier beds available. He knew that Uncle Greg and Uncle Scott have beds in Sunriver so the second night he requested to sleep on Uncle Scott’s bed. It is relatively close to the ground so we approved. The silly guy wanted to sleep on top of the covers so we had to sneak in and cover him up with some blankets. It was either a full or a queen…I’m not sure…so the lucky boy got his first night in a big bed!

Simon’s first sleep in his own room

Simon still shares our room at home. Eventually the boys will share, but we’re not ready for that step yet. However, in Sunriver there were enough rooms for everyone to have their own. We put Simon in his own room just to see how he would do. Simon did fine…but I did not appreciate having to walk all the way across the house every time he woke up. When he’s next to me at home I can help him fall back asleep before he ever fully wakes up…not so when he’s in a different room! We’ll be sharing our room with him for a bit longer at home.

Elias’ first time playing with a real Tonka truck

Uncle Scott got down his old Tonka truck from the attic the last time he was at Sunriver, so it was waiting for us to play with when we arrived. Elias loved playing with the Tonka truck outside. He loaded it with rocks and drove it all around the neighborhood. He had some good ol’ little boy fun.

P1120285 P1120294Besides all these firsts we just had a lot of relaxing time and family time. Vacations are never actually very relaxing with young kiddos, but it was just fun to get away for a change of pace, and to have nothing on the schedule. Here are a few more photos of our fun:

Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Ff)

We had a lot of fun studying Ff this week. One day this week as I was talking to Elias, I asked him what words he knows that start with F. He named the words we had studied already (flowers and friends). Then I asked him if he knew any more words that start with F. He said, “F is for fuh….fuh….fuh….kangaroo!” Well….at least he knows what sound F makes even if he isn’t really connecting it with the beginning sounds of words yet.

Saturday: F is for Flowers

Saturday morning my husband went fishing so I was home with the boys. I took Elias to the Fred Meyer gardening section and allowed him to choose some flowers to plant in deck pots for our balcony. He had a lot of fun picking out flowers. Later that evening after my husband was home to watch the baby, I took Elias out on the deck and we potted the flowers together. He loved it! Every day since then, he has wanted to water the flowers. Unfortunately, it has been raining so he hasn’t had much of a need to water his plants!

Sunday: F is for Fire

Sunday was Pentecost so I thought that F is for Fire would be appropriate. I made us grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch, and I surprised Elias with a birthday candle in each one. He was delighted! We explained to him about the birthday of the church, and then he got to blow out the candle…his favorite part!

P1120127Monday: F is for Friends

On Monday, Elias got to make a gift for some of his friends. He is part of a play group on Tuesdays. He chose a paper mache box of a different shape for each of his friends. Then, I got out our tempra paints, and let him paint away. He loved painting of course! On Tuesday, we gave them to his friends to take home.

P1120148 P1120157

Tuesday: F is for Frogs

On Tuesday we sang lots of frog songs. Elias’ favorite was Five Little Speckled Frogs

Wednesday: F is for Father

We sang the “Our Father in Heaven” song which is the Lord’s Prayer set to music. Then, we talked about how Father is another word for Daddy, and he painted a big letter F which will be part of a Father’s Day card for his Daddy. I won’t put a picture of the finished product so that it will be a surprise for Daddy, but here you can see him just starting out:

P1120159Thursday: F is for Food

Today we played with his wooden food. We prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and pretended to eat it. We also went grocery shopping in the evening and talked about the food we were buying.

Friday: F is for Fishermen

Well…I don’t think I would be considered a Bartle if I did not include fish in some way this week. Tomorrow we will play with Elias’ fishing pole. Since it is the Bible lesson day, I am going to read him the story of Jesus telling the fishermen to cast their nets again, and they get more than they can carry!

Brothers

brothersThe other day I decided that Simon needed a few more 9 month size onesies. (Yes you read that right…9 months clothes at 3 months old). We had a fair number of them that Elias wore, but I wanted two or three more because it seemed like we were always running out. I found a cute “little brother” onesie that almost perfectly matched a “big brother” shirt that Elias has. On Saturday morning, I dressed them both in their shirts brothers 2and tried for a photo op. I haven’t been too successful at getting Elias to pose next to Simon for the camera. This time was no different. I actually made Elias cry because I pushed too hard…so I backed off and felt majorly guilty. A few minutes later, Simon blew out the onesie anyway so it’s good I enjoyed their matching outfits when I could. (Does anyone else notice that it is always the white onesies that get poop stains all over them?)

On Our 7th Anniversary

Dear Husband,

On our honeymoon

On our honeymoon

Today is our 7th wedding anniversary. Since you have work and class today, and we’ll barely see each other, we celebrated yesterday with a family dinner and a trip to the symphony. We hadn’t been alone together since Simon was born, and even though we talked about our kids in the car on the way there, I remembered how much I just enjoy being with you. No 1000 questions from the back seat. No twisting our bodies in impossible directions to try to retrieve the pacifier. No Mary Had A Little Lamb in the cd player. (Although those things are fun in their own way). It was just us. Together. And I loved it.

After seven years you think you know a person. But after seven years I think I’m just realizing how much there is to know. Because knowing someone isn’t like reading every word of a book or counting every coin in the piggy bank. You’ve changed in these seven years just as I have, and each day I am knowing you over and over again.

I love you, Nathan. I love you as a husband and a father. I love you as a son and uncle and brother in law. I love you as a computer nerd and programmer and a linguistics student. I love you as a studier of Greek and a Sunday School teacher…and yes…even a video game player. I love YOU. I see God in you, like we heard in the sermon yesterday. I see that sliver of the infinite that God placed there to reflect Him.

I’ve loved our seven years together. Here’s to seventy times seven more!

Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Ee)

This week was Ee week in the Smith household. Elias liked it because his name starts with E. He kept saying, “I start with E!” I think Elias can definitely hear the sounds in words, but often he only talks about words we’ve used in our study rather than applying it to new words. But he’s only two after all. He seems to be most interested in talking about the letter B and words that start with buh. Almost every time I brought up the letter E this week he either referenced his name or wanted to talk about Bb.

Ee was a difficult letter for me to think of letter of the week activities so I had to break my trend and do both long and short E. I have been trying to only do one sound per week (only short a, only hard c, etc.), but I could not think of enough words for either long or short e, so I just did both.

Here were our Ee activities:

Saturday: E is for Egg

I got out our plastic Easter eggs so that Elias could play with them again. He loved opening and closing them, counting them, and putting them in and out of the basket. He tried putting them inside each other, and mixing colors. He had a blast, and wanted to play with them all week!

Sunday: E is for Eagle

Nathan’s adult coed slow pitch softball team is called the Screaming Eagles. I decided we would go cheer on the Eagles during their game. Unfortunately, it was raining so we didn’t get to go. I couldn’t justify taking a two year old and a three month old out into the rain just for an alphabet activity. Oh well.

Monday: E is for Elmo

I let Elias watch a little bit of Elmo’s world, and he colored some pages of his Elmo coloring book. We also talked about all of the Sesame street characters and what color they are. Elias said his favorite color is red like Elmo.

Tuesday: E is for Endangered

I read Elias some stories about Endangered animals. I tried to explain to him what endangered means, but I don’t think he really got it. We chose some of the animals that we read about, and searched for pictures of them on the internet. Then we printed them out and Elias colored them. He chose a tree frog, a manatee, a panther, and a gorilla.

Wednesday: E is for Elephant

elephantsWe went to the zoo! Unfortunately, it was raining on this day as well, but I figured that we are in Oregon after all and we aren’t afraid of a little rain. Elias had a blast at the zoo. He knew we were going mostly to see the elephants, so every time I tried to stop at an animal on the way he just said he wanted to see the elephants first. After we had watched the elephants for a good long while, he named some other animals that he wanted to see. His favorites (besides the elephants) were the polar bears, the otters, and the leopards.

Thursday: E is for Elias

paintingI couldn’t resist using Elias’ name for one of his words this week. I bought a canvas and let Elias choose some paint colors at the craft store. Then I used masking tape to spell his name on the canvas, and let him paint over it. When it dried, I took off the masking tape so that his name showed. The tape did not work as well as I had hoped. There are splotches of paint underneath where the tape was so the borders are not smooth. I will have to go over the borders in black or dark green paint before we hang it on his wall, but I think it will turn out pretty cute in the end. Elias certainly had fun painting it!

Friday: E is for Elijah

Our Bible story for the week was about Elijah. Lots of good stuff, and the stories are relatively new to Elias .

Sibling Talk

The first day that Nathan went back to work after Simon was born…and therefore the first day I was alone with both boys….I merely mentioned to Elias that I might go shower soon, and I might bring Simon with me, and I would let him watch any movie he wanted while that was happening. Cue major meltdown. I don’t know if Elias didn’t like the idea of Simon occupying the physical space between me and himself. Or if he was jealous that Simon got to be in the bathroom with me. Or if he was just otherwise emotional because his Daddy was absent. Needless to say…it was very difficult to get a shower in that day.

Fast forward to today (about two months later) and you’ll see we’ve come a long way. I usually get in my morning routine before Elias wakes up. However, this morning, everyone decided to wake up early so I was unable to do so. I put Simon in the bouncer so I could just peek out and check on him, and told Elias that I was going to go get clean. He came in the bathroom as well. I was not looking forward to the shower….trying to shower in peace with a two year old and a three month old just outside the tub didn’t sound very fun. But I was in for a surprise.

Simon was sitting in his bouncer, happy as usual…but Elias just started talking to him and comforting him. He said, “Mommy will be done soon, Simon.” and “Hi Simon are you kicking your legs so fast, Simon?” and “Look at your toys Simon. You have one, two, three of them!” and “Look at this turtle. It’s green and orange.” Elias just went on and on and on talking to his little brother. I actually stayed in the shower a bit longer than usual…silent….just listening to Elias talk to Simon. It was so cute, my heart nearly melted on the spot.

Simon – 3 months

3 months Simon was three months old yesterday. He “talks” up a storm at home, and is generally very happy. I can imagine him being the life of the party some day….sort of like his Daddy. Simon is becoming more and more interested in his big brother every day. He watches Elias’ every move, and sometimes tries to turn his head even upside down to follow Elias across the room. He can hold his own head up, and has recently started sucking on his fists. If he can get something else into his mouth (his bib, my fingers, etc.) he will suck on that as well. He can grasp rattles and other objects if I place them in his hand, and also attempts to bring those to his mouth, although, is often not successful.

3 months 23 months has gone by so quickly. Simon has already grown and changed so much. I feel like I am more on top of things…I have recovered from the shock of having a child faster than I did the first time. So I also feel like I am taking in more of Simon as a baby. I am enjoying it more. At the same time, though, since there are two of them….I am not able to focus as much attention on Simon. I be sure to give him focused attention each day, but a lot of the time he ends up just laying on his tummy or back and watching Elias and I play…or sitting in the bouncer watching me make lunch, etc. I can’t believe it’s already been a quarter of a year.

rollIn other news, Simon rolled over from front to back today for the first time. I guess he thought he’d start out his fourth month of life with a bang! I put Simon on his tummy on the floor where he could watch Elias and I play catch. He was happy for a few minutes, but then as usual started to let me know he did not appreciate being flat on his tummy. I looked over at him, and saw that he was pushing himself onto his side…then he just rolled over. I put him back on his tummy to see if he would do it again. He rolled onto his side many times, but did not successfully roll onto his back again. Only time will tell if this was a fluke, or if he really is going to start rolling over consistently now! The picture at the right was taken shortly after he rolled over…he was a bit surprised to be on his back!
