Simon and Mommy Date

Today was Elias’ last day of preschool for the year. Before preschool started in January, I had a lot of grand plans for what I was going to do with those two hours. I thought Simon and I would get to spend so much quality time together one on one. What did I actually do with the time? Most weeks I drug him around on errand after errand. He was a good sport about it, but it wasn’t fun. I did get a few play dates in there….but mostly just errands.

So I was feeling a little bit sad and a little bit guilty last night when I realized it was my last chance until September. So off to the zoo we went! Man was it crowded! But it was fun nonetheless.

I am always surprised when I am one on one with one of the boys at how relaxed I feel. I never felt so relaxed when Elias was the only child, and I certainly don’t feel so relaxed when I am alone with both boys. But just one? A piece of cake! It was so much fun just focusing on Simon and what he wanted to see and do for a little over an hour. Here are some pictures from our mommy son date:

Notice how perfectly I angled this shot…with the sleeping sea lion poking out right between our heads.

P1170875I think Simon’s favorite were the Cheetahs. In this picture they are sleeping, but they were up before I took this shot.

P1170879Oh these cheeks! I love these cheeks!

P1170880And….he’s already ready to explore off on his own…leaving me behind.

P1170885Simon earned his first skinned knee at the zoo this morning as well. Luckily it isn’t too bad.

First Picnic of the Season!

It has been so much fun enjoying this warm weather! What is better in warm weather than picnics? Not much, I say! And now, we can even picnic in our own backyard! We are lucky to have a backyard that is in the shade in the evening. No sunscreen needed! I love family life!

Slide!

We got Simon a small slide for his first birthday. He always had fun on it, but it made me nervous because he needed help climbing up and sliding down. Recently, however, Simon has finally reached the stage where he can climb up the steps, safely maneuver his feet in front of him, and slide down safely all on his own. It has opened up a world of fun for the boys in playing together. They race around and around taking turns down the slide.

P1170802Of course, Simon likes to do everything his big brother does. That includes giving stuffed animals or cars or other toys a turn down the slide. That includes yelling or screaming in joy on the way down…whatever Elias comes up with. The most nerve-wracking for me, though, was the tummy slide. Elias is tall enough to actually reach the bottom of the slide while his feet are still at the top. Simon….no so much. So I have to watch carefully. I don’t want him to get a busted lip!

P1170806In these few days of heat, Simon has been barefoot…another slide no no. His feet once got stuck, and the momentum launched his body off the slide. Socks are a must from now on!

Elias’ First Trout Catch!

Uncle Scott has been itching to take Elias out trout fishing since before he was born. Elias did go on the boat with the boys once at Hagg Lake, but no fish were caught. Uncle Scott has been scheming for awhile to get us out trout fishing again. The weather cooperated very nicely this evening so we picked up Daddy at the train station, and headed out with a picnic to meet Uncle Scott, Auntie Kristy, Ama and Baba at Commonwealth Lake Park.

Elias was very excited to fish. He needs a little work on his technique. He didn’t seem to understand that he needs to keep the pole tip up or that you can’t just walk around with the pole…but you know…minor details. He enjoyed it very much.

P1170746 P1170758We took a break for our picnic dinner, during which the fish started biting. Uncle Scott got the first catch. He let Simon touch it before he released it back in the lake. I snapped the picture just a moment too soon, but Simon did touch the fish.

P1170779Then Simon decided he wanted to try out this fishing thing.

P1170783Then, Elias caught his first fish! He reeled it in almost all by himself.

P1170789Here you can see the fish still in the water, but Elias almost has it all the way in.

P1170791Here is Uncle Scott with the pliers trying to disconnect the fish so we can release it. Elias was a little traumatized by the fish flopping. He pretty much threw down the pole and grabbed for Baba for dear life.

P1170793Elias’ picture with his first fish…he pretty much didn’t want anything to do with it. He just wanted it to go back in the “pool.”

P1170796But once it was back in the lake, Elias was super excited! This picture says it all:

P1170797He was excited for awhile after that:

P1170800Then he wanted to try again!

P1170801On the way home he said, “I just want to be fishing.” and “My favorite part was catching the fish.” Uncle Scott has a lot of work to do if he wants a fishing buddy…but I think we’re off to a good start.

Wardrobe Changes

Each year when the seasons change, I have to change out the boys’ wardrobes from winter to spring/summer or from summer to fall/winter. Since we are saving the clothes for more potential children, I fold them carefully away into their storage box, and get out the new ones to fill their dresser.

Usually when I get out Simon’s new box, I look at the clothes sentimentally, remembering how Elias wore them when he was little. Today, though, I took out the 2T box. For Simon. Many of the 18 months clothes fit him well, but some are getting snug (it just depends on the brand) But I decided since we are changing out to the spring wardrobe anyway, I would just move him up to the next size.

I took each item out of the box, and I couldn’t believe how recently it seemed Elias had worn them. And then I did the math. Elias changed from 2T to 3T in the spring of 2013. That means that he was only wearing those clothes a little over a year ago! How in the world is Simon growing so fast? It is too fast, and my mind has been in a whirl over it all day.

I do feel lucky that we are able to save all of these clothes. We won’t have to buy anything for Simon for the next year (or however long he fits into the 2T size!).

Matching Jammies

P1170729My sister in law once told me that my niece loves matching jammies with her little sister. Specifically she said, “Matching jammies make me happy.”

Well Audrey….matching jammies make me happy too. Elias picked these out a few weeks ago, and though we have all of the hand me down jammies for Simon, I thought I would buy him one set just so we could have a matching pair. After baths this evening, I dressed Elias, and Nathan dressed Simon. Without consulting, we both happened to pick the matching pair. I thought I would snap a few pictures since they were so cute in their matching jammies, brushing their teeth together.

P1170725Here they are again, standing on the stool together. I love pictures like this where they are looking at each other. Their relationship is really developing and changing so quickly now that Simon is more mobile, has more language, and can stick up for himself a bit.

Water Table Fun!

Elias has had a ton of fun with the water table at my parents’ house the last two summers so I always knew it would be something we’d want when we got the space. A month or so ago, Costco had water tables for sale so I asked Nathan if I could get them one. (He said yes).

Today was gorgeous and in the upper 80’s. Driving around to all of our morning events I felt so warm, but when I checked the car thermometer it said 74 degrees. I am such a wimp! It did end up at 88 degrees or so. When Simon went down for his nap, I pulled that water table out of its box, and assembled it. After Simon woke, it was into swimsuits and out onto the deck we went.

The boys had a blast. It was fun to watch them play together part of the time. Of course they also had some disagreements as well…but that’s just being brothers, right?

I love this picture because it shows how much Simon looks up to his brother. I snapped this only a few seconds after they got outside.

P1170690In the afternoon, our back deck is in the shade. It was perfect because I didn’t have to worry about hats or sunscreen or getting to hot, but it was still warm enough to be able to play in the hose water!

P1170701The boys got into some splashing. They were both giggling a bunch!

P1170710Elias decided he wanted to “swim” in the water table, so he wanted to add more water. I didn’t tell him how to work the hose because I wanted to see what he would do. The boys were pretty cute. They used teamwork to turn the nozzle, but not quite enough so most of the water leaked out from the faucet. Elias carried the watering bucket back and forth a few times to fill the table. Simon helped by turning the water on and off.

P1170722Here is Elias swimming.

P1170718And here is Simon deciding that the water faucet was more interesting than the water table. Playing with the faucet will probably just be a special treat from now on because it used up quite a bit of water.

P1170716Our first water table use was a success! Nana came over in the evening to watch the boys while Nathan and I are at bell choir practice. She took them out to play again after dinner and by their happy sounds when we got home, I’d say they had just as much fun the second time!

Look Who’s Using A Spoon!

We decided to let Simon try to feed himself some yogurt today. He feeds himself almost everything, but we had not let him try yogurt yet because it is so messy. Generally we are still feeding him on spoon foods (which he doesn’t have much of at this point). Simon did pretty well with the spoon. He was oh so proud and excited! Here is my bundle of cuteness:

Seed Planting Update!

A few weeks ago, I helped Elias plant some seeds. He chose many different variety of fruits and vegetables as well as flowers. We’ve been having fun watching them sprout. I have to say I am very pleased that most of the seeds actually worked! There are a few that didn’t (green beans and coleus) but for the most part, we have actual plants growing! Who would have thought? We’ve looked at how different they all are already.

Some of the seedlings were getting a bit large for their containers, and the tray didn’t drain rain water well at all so I thought it was time to transplant them into larger pots. Today while Simon was napping, Nathan Elias and I decided to get outside to do some work.

First, Elias filled all the pots with dirt. Then, he helped Nathan clean the grill while I weeded and finished getting things ready.

P1170656 Then we started transplanting the little sprouts. Elias did have fun moving a couple of the plants.

P1170661But he was mostly interested in the part where he got to mark the containers with a sharpie so we would know what they are:

P1170663Here are our carrots. We moved these into one of our big raised beds along with the brocolli. The rest are in pots for now until we figure out what is actually going to produce and what is going to need a bigger area.

P1170664Elias was excited about the project.

P1170667Here are our finished pots! Some of them look so small in the big pots. I hope I didn’t move them too soon. I really have no idea what I am doing….

P1170668Elias wanted to take a picture of one of the pumpkin sprouts.

P1170669So far so good! I really hope some of these actually produce things we can eat!

Happy Easter!

Our Easter was filled with fun family traditions! What did we start with? Easter egg dying on Saturday afternoon!

Elias really enjoyed it this time. He chose solid colors and decorated them with stickers.

P1170514What did Simon do during all of this? Empty as many kitchen drawers as he could, and bang on the floor with the items!

P1170522

Our Easter was a little odd, though, too. Saturday night we dropped the boys off at my parents’ house after dinner. Nathan and I played in the handbell choir at church at all of the services, and had to be there too early for two semi-sick little boys. My parents offered to let them have a sleepover, and drop them off to us at a more reasonable time in the morning.

Elias is an old pro at sleepovers, but it was Simon’s first time. I must admit I cried a little bit. But the boys did fine as I knew they would. My parents brought them dressed in their cute Easter outfits. Simon went happily down to the nursery, and Elias came to service with us. After the first service was over, we went outside for the Easter egg hunt. I wasn’t sure how they would do with it, but they both enjoyed it! Simon and Elias both found an egg right away. Simon proceeded to pick it up and put it back in the grass over and over again. Elias put his one egg in his basket and then followed Simon around the rest of the time. So they both only got one egg, but it was the experience that counted.

P1170535After the hunt we traded some time taking family pictures with another family. It is always fun to have one of the whole gang!

P1170556Then we went back inside for a bit before the next service. Simon again went to the nursery, and Elias came to church with us until Ama and Baba came back to get them. Simon needed a nap and Elias needed some play time.

After service, we went to my parents’ house to pick up the boys. Before we left, Ama and Baba had some Easter baskets and an egg hunt for them. Simon had just woken up from his nap so he didn’t really know what was going on at first.

P1170560 But he perked up a bit after tasting a bit of chocolate. He had never had quite so much chocolate before. He drooled chocolate brown mess all over his shirt!

P1170571Elias was happy to dig right in.

P1170564He was excited about each item, and held it up for me to take a picture. He even wanted me to take a picture of each piece of grass….I humored him a few times because it was pretty cute, but we didn’t have all day!

P1170587Look at this handsome man I am married to….

P1170575Then it was egg hunt time. Simon bit his basket in anticipation.

P1170596They boys had fun finding eggs again. Here they are going after the same one. A brotherly rivalry.

P1170604Simon enjoyed playing with the eggs for a bit.

P1170614But he got bored while Elias was opening them all up. Coasters are so much more interesting.

P1170612After this we decided to go home for a few hours. We were very thankful my parents helped us out so much! When we arrived at home, we had some Easter things for the boys ourselves! So we did the whole charade again. I started to feel like it was too much. Poor Simon did too.

P1170645But Elias was happy to continue the festivities. He found some eggs. Simon helped find a few, but mostly just wanted to put them in Elias’ basket. Elias was fine with that.

P1170639They enjoyed looking at their Easter baskets from us. Elias again wanted to hold everything up for a picture….but he wouldn’t look at me. Oh well.

P1170618I felt relieved when we were all finished. Nathan took the boys outside for a bit to play with some new bubbles. I got some alone time to bake some cookies, and clean the kitchen. Whoopeeee! We settled in together to read the resurrection story, and then it was about time to go out again.

We went to dinner at my aunt and uncle’s house, ate some delicious food, and had some more quality time with family. It was a good way to end the day, but the boys were toast, and frankly, so was I!

Alleluia! The Lord is risen!
