Fathers Day Fun

Happy Fathers Day to all of the Dads out there. We celebrated in lots of different ways today. We woke up and gave Daddy his cards and gift while still in our pajamas. Elias had made two different cards for his Daddy. We got Nathan a Hillsboro Hops baseball hat. Perfect timing for tomorrow’s opener!

Then we got ready and went to church. Both boys did well there, and we got to celebrate a member’s 90th birthday afterward. Elias ate a ton of strawberries and managed to drip strawberry all over his brand new polo.

When we got home I made the boys lunch before packing up to go to the pool. When Elias was born, I asked Nathan what he wanted his Fathers Day tradition to be. He decided on a trip to the swimming pool! We have done that every year since. (Three years now) Elias absolutely loved it. His favorite was jumping in, but he also enjoyed motor boats, shooting hoops, and playing on a big mat. Simon also took swimming in stride. He even smiled once or twice this time!

We went home for a short rest, gave everyone baths, and then got ready to go out again. This time we headed over to Uncle Scott and Auntie Kristy’s house to celebrate with my dad. I wished I had brought my camera. Elias was picking strawberries and raspberries to pop in his mouth right off their backyard plants. There were also some very rowdy sword fights between Elias, Uncle Scott, and Baba. My boys are so lucky to have so many good men in their lives. My brother cooked a great meal (bbq ribs and chicken), but the best part was just hanging out with family.

Now both boys are asleep, Nathan is at his softball game, and I am trying to relax a bit. A great day!

Summer Bucket List 2013

shortsIt’s time for the Smith Family 2013 Summer Bucket List! We’ve been doing the seasonal bucket lists for two years now, and it really helps us to get outside and enjoy life as well as try new things. Hopefully we’ll do them for years to come!

swim suitThis summer for our bucket list I created a clothes line to hang above our fire place. I created a template for both a boys and girls swimsuit, and then cut out a bunch from a variety of brightly colored papers. Then I wrote one bucket list item on the back of each swim suit and hung them on the clothes line. It turned out great! The only thing I didn’t like about it was that my son didn’t get to participate in making it. I’m thinking of having him decorate something to go on the wall with our bucket list, but that is a project for another day.

closeupWhat is on our bucket list this summer? Here it is:

Make (and eat) healthy popsicles

– Have a picnic on the waterfront

– Play in the ocean

-Participate in the Portland Bridge Pedal

-Attend an Oregon Zoo concert

– Go on a day hike with the Kelty backpack

-Run a 5K

-Drink lemonade while putting our bare feet in the grass

-Play a family soccer game

– Go down a water slide

-Have a big bbq at a park

-Start a savings plan for a piano

-Try 4 new dinner recipes

-Take a tour of the USS Blueback at OMSI

-Visit the World Forestry Center Discovery Museum

-Go to Enchanted Forest

-Visit Voodoo Donuts

Simon – 4 month stats

Simon had his four month well check up today. He did very well! His doctor said it seemed more like a 6 month check up than a 4 month check up based on his size, his social behaviors, and his level of alertness. He is growing up too fast! Simon got two shots and one oral vaccine. He cried a bit, but stopped as soon as I picked him up. What a trooper. Here are his stats:

Weight: 18 lb 10.1 oz (93.86%)

Height: 26.61 inches (95.19%)

Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Ii)

Ii week was a lot of fun here in the Smith household. I decided to do both long and short Ii words. However, Elias insists that “I says ih” (short i). Oh well. He’s only two and we had fun anyway….and he’s got it partly right!

Saturday: I is for Ink

We got Elias a transportation stamp set for Christmas 2012. It got a bit lost in the shuffle since he opened a bunch of presents from a bunch of different people in a couple short days. We decided to put the stamp set away in our closet for another special time because we didn’t think he even noticed it. Voila! Christmas in June! We used just red and blue ink at first, but then expanded to other colors.

P1120456Sunday: I is for Isaac

Nathan read to Elias about Isaac from his children’s Bible. Israel is a bit abstract for his age and Isaiah was also a bit out of his reach. So…Isaac it was.

Monday: I is for Igloo

I had a great craft planned. We were going to make a marshmallow igloo. However, when we got started on it, we discovered that the marshmallows I had purchased were all melted, gooey, and stuck together in large clumps. We plugged away trying to separate marshmallows and glue them into an igloo for about ten minutes. The marshmallows just stuck to our fingers. I was very frustrated and so was Elias. So we quit. No igloo for us. Next time I’m going with sugar cubes.

Tuesday: I is for Ice

On Tuesday we made magic ice. We mixed baking soda and water. Then I let Elias dye it with food coloring, and add sprinkles (or as he calls them “decorations”). We put it all in the freezer for a few hours. In the evening, he took out his ice cubes and poured vinegar on them. They were fizzing fun. It would have been nice to do this outside in hot weather….but no such luck. It was still fun! (I’ve also heard you can freeze just vinegar and add the baking soda after it’s frozen. Maybe we’ll try that another day to compare)

P1120483 P1120488 P1120505 P1120506Wednesday: I is for insect

Today we made insect fossils. I got some plastic insects for Elias, and got out the play-doh. We pressed the insects into the play-doh to leave an imprint. Elias really liked the activity. We had to get out all of the colors of play-doh, and we have done it every day since!

P1120511 P1120517 P1120520 P1120525Thursday: I is for Ice cream

Our song for the week was “Do you know the ice cream man” (to the tune of “do you know the muffin man”). So…we just had to go out for ice cream as a treat. We got a coupon in the mail for Cold Stone so we decided to go there. Of course, Elias wanted nothing to do with the ice cream himself. But he was interested in what flavors we chose.

Friday: I is for Ibex

We made an ibex toilet paper roll craft that I found on DLTK. I was planning on checking out a book from the library so that we could learn about the ibex, but I never got around to it. Elias enjoyed making the ibex, and was excited to show it to Daddy when he got home from work.

Simon – 4 Months

Simon is four months old today. I feel like things are going by so much faster the second time around…yet I can’t imagine a time without him. We are just so blessed to have him with us. At four months…Simon rolls over well from front to back. He laughs and squeaks and squawks often. He drools like a faucet. He loves tummy time. His favorite toys are soft things that he can grab and stick in his mouth. Simon has a lot of trouble falling asleep, and often wakes up many many times in his first hour or so of sleep. However, after that, he most often sleeps through the night these days.

In honor of his being four months old, I naturally took lots of pictures. Here are a few of them…but probably still more than most people would care to look at. Scroll through as many as you like. They are pretty darn cute:

Sleepy

Most days, Elias does not nap. It took me a long time to accept that that was going to be the new norm. I was expecting him to nap at least another year or two. But, we decided it was actually better that he doesn’t nap because when he did, he was not tired at bedtime. He’d lay in the dark talking to himself for up to two or three hours sometimes. Now that I have accepted this turn of events, I actually like it. If Simon naps well, I get some good quality time with Elias during the day. Even though I’d really like a nap myself some days, I treasure this time with him where we just do quiet activities together such as reading, puzzles, or art.

When Elias first started dropping the nap, he’d nap a couple times a week. Then it went down to once a week or so. Now…I think he has napped twice in the last month. So you can see why I was surprised yesterday to go in his room after quiet time and find him like this:

P1120509First, I thought about how cute it was. Book in hand. Comfy in the rocking chair. Poor sleepy boy. Second, I was actually a bit disappointed. I look forward to this time with him and I didn’t get it when he actually slept. Third, it struck me that both boys were asleep! What would I do with myself? I carefully moved Elias to his bed, quietly shut the door, paid a couple bills, got out my cross stitch, sat on the couch and did about six stitches….and Simon woke up. That’s life I guess.

A Fun and Productive Saturday

This morning we decided to take advantage of a free Saturday to get some projects done around the house. I’ve been feeling like things are getting a bit out of hand over here, and since I will be starting work in a couple weeks, I want the house to be in order. Nathan’s project was the windows. They collect a lot of road grime and a bit of mold, along with lots of smears. We hadn’t cleaned them in ages. Nathan did a great job!

P1120435 My project was kids clothes. Elias recently outgrew all of his size 2T clothes so we are starting over with 3T. However, all of his old size clothes were still taking up space in his dresser and the boys’ closet. On top of that, Simon out grows sizes faster than you can say “get out the next size!” So….I sorted all the clothes we have for the boys, got out Elias’ old 12 month clothes for Simon (he is not quite in that size yet, but will be before the end of summer so now we are prepared), put away Elias’ 2T clothes, and reorganized the closet and dressers. Whew! I’m glad I won’t have to deal with clothes anymore until autumn!

P1120447What did the boys do while we were busy, you ask? Elias decided he wanted to paint. So paint he did.

P1120453We were recently given a chair for Simon by a friend. I got it out for him to try for the first time today. He enjoyed sitting up rather than having to lay on the floor. He sat in there for a good twenty minutes before he needed a change of scenery. He entertained himself with some rattles.

P1120450P1120440Don’t worry. We didn’t spend this entire beautiful day indoors. We took the boys out around 11 for a picnic. Then Elias and Daddy went to go play while Simon ate and took a short nap. I had him in the shade under a tree. When he woke up he was laying on the picnic blanket, and was entranced by the leaves rustling above us. What a great day!

Letter of the Week: A Toddler’s Alphabet Study (Hh)

It was H week in the Smith household. Elias enjoyed talking about H. I think he just likes making the “h” sound because every time we talked about it, he made the sound right away! Here is what we did:

Saturday: H is for House

I was painting a wooden box for a project at church, so I let Elias pick out a wooden bird house to paint as well. I also let him choose his colors. He picked purple, brown, red, and light blue. I am not sure yet whether we will keep the birdhouse to be displayed inside, or if we will put it outside on our balcony. We have a lot of bird traffic at our feeder right now so it might be fun to put out. Here is my little artist:

Testing out the new medium. I don't think he's every painted wood before.

Sunday: H is for Hawaii

There were so many ideas I had for Hawaii, but we’ve been a bit heavy on the arts and crafts with this alphabet project so I decided to do something different. I cranked up the volume on some Hawaiian music, and we had a listen/dance party. I used the Makaha Sons, but there are lots of good choices out there. I also showed Elias where Hawaii is on the map compared to us. He was not very interested in the map, but hopefully some day he will be.

Monday: H is for Honduras

One of the little boys we sponsor (Esdras) is from Honduras. He was born on the exact same day as Elias. Elias and I talked about Esdras and prayed for him. Then I showed him Honduras on the map (again, Elias was not super interested in that). Then I asked Elias what he wanted to make to send to Esdras. He chose a watercolor painting. Here he is making his artwork to send to Honduras.

P1120389P1120388Tuesday: H is for Hands

We talked a lot about hands today. We listed things that we use our hands for. We made lots of sign language letters (Elias really likes M, N, and T because his thumb “plays peek-a-boo). We counted our fingers. Then we traced our hands and cut them out to be decorated. Look at his cute little hands:

P1120405Wednesday: H is for Helicopter

We went to the library to sign up for the summer reading program, and to find a book about rescue helicopters. Uncle Greg just got hired on as a life flight pilot in Ohio, so I thought it would be fun for Elias to find out more about what he will be doing. We found a book at the library pretty quickly. We checked out Working Hard with the Rescue Helicopter by Cynthia Benjamin. I was also planning on playing with Harold the Helicopter but we never got around to it.

Thursday: H is for Highlights

I was actually planning on doing H is for hammer today. I was going to get some golf tees and styrofoam and let Elias hammer away. However, stellar mom that I am, I never got to the store to purchase them/never found anyone to borrow said items from. So…I had to improvise. As I sat next to Elias at lunch trying to think of an “H” activity, I spotted his Highlights magazine. So…H is for Highlights. We read some short stories and poems out of it, and did a couple puzzles together.

Friday: H is for Heaven

I was going to read the resurrection story to Elias and talk a bit about Heaven today for our Bible lesson. However, when I mentioned Heaven, Elias said he wanted to sing “Our Father in Heaven.” After we finished singing that, I decided to read him the story of Jesus teaching the Lord’s prayer. I still talked to him a bit about Heaven, but that concept is a bit out of his reach at two years old.

Hillsboro Hops

P1120397Hillsboro is now the proud host of an official minor league baseball team. The Hillsboro Hops will be having their first season here in a week or so. Since Nathan is an avid baseball fan, and is instructing our boys in the art of baseball fan-dom, we snatched up a four game mini plan and tickets to the season opener.

What’s a good way to help cheer on your team? T-shirts! I purchased the boys matching Hops t-shirts. Unfortunately, they had no baby or toddler sizes. The smallest they had was a child small. It looks like it will be fitting Elias for a few years to come! When he came out in his new t-shirt I gave a good chuckle at its size compared to him. But he was so proud to be wearing a P1120400matching t-shirt with Daddy. All day he talked about his shirt so I couldn’t make him change.

Elias even christened his Hops shirt with his own blood later in the evening! He was running outside and took a spill. He got his first ever chin scrape complete with blood on the shirt. We’re looking forward to a fun summer of baseball!

Reading, Bath Time, and Other Fun Times

readingElias is still moving forward in his relationship with Simon. His pediatrician said it could take six months for him to adjust to a new normal…and it’s only been three and a half…but we are well on our way. Each day there is something new that Elias wants to do with/for Simon, or something he says that shows he is becoming more comfortable with and loving his little brother more every day.

P1120059A few days ago, Elias decided he wanted to read to Simon. He went to get one of our cloth books that he had seen my friend Jenny reading to her son. Then he set it in front of Simon and started reading the pages. The book was called “colors”. Elias said the color, and talked about all of the objects with Simon. It was so cute. Simon was very interested in the book too…so it was a good choice!

Usually at bath time, Simon gets his bath in the baby bath tub while Elias watches. Then I get Simon ready for bed while Elias gets his bath in the big tub with Daddy. This evening, Elias suddenly exclaimed that he wanted to help wash Simon. He grabbed a spare washcloth, dipped it in the water, and started rinsing his brother. He was tentative at first. He just dripped a bit on Simon’s stomach…but didn’t want to touch him. Then he got the idea that he wanted to wash Simon’s head. I was torn for a bit…watching Elias love and get closer to his younger brother….and also watching the water drip and drip and drip into Simon’s eyes. Poor little guy didn’t even get that much water in his face at the pool! Finally, I said, “Alright! His head is done! Mommy’s turn! Thank you so much for helping, Elias.” Elias was so proud, and Simon was a little trooper like always.
